Those yellow-coated Fiesta scouts are hanging on Notre Dame's every snap against Stanford on Saturday night to see if it can firm up one half of its bowl.

Notre Dame qualifies for BCS status by winning at Palo Alto. "Qualifies" is code for lead-pipe lock for the Fiesta. If Southern California and Texas meet in the Rose Bowl as expected, the Fiesta gets first pick of all the available talent.

Penn State's 10-1 season might be the feel-good story of the season. Notre Dame is literally the most famous football program in the nation. So there's that tiebreaker. Then the question becomes who to match against the Irish?
<table align="left" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" width="175"> <tbody><tr> <td width="175">

</td> <td width="15">
</td> </tr> <tr> <td width="175"> If Fiesta Bowl officials have any sense, Oregon coach Mike Bellotti won't get soaked at Sun Devil Stadium. (AP) </td> <td width="15">
</td> </tr> </tbody></table>
Pac-10 commissioner Tom Hansen, whose league is a Fiesta partner, wants 10-1 Oregon to get a shot. He calls Notre Dame against Ohio State a "regional" game. If you consider the co-champion of the conference that commands a quarter of the nation's TVs vs. the flagship university for one of the world's largest religions then, sure, it's regional.

That begs the question -- what is the appeal of Notre Dame-Oregon beyond Eugene and some overseas manufacturing plants? Maybe all the nation's Nike wearers will band together and support de facto Oregon president Phil Knight, the former Nike CEO who is now the chairman of the board of directors. Knight's company has basically paid for any Oregon athletic facility of note.

Oregon AD Bill Moos and coach Mike Bellotti flew to Phoenix this week to make a presentation. Unless Knight provided more than the Gulfstream to get them there (hint: a sizable "donation" to the Fiesta's favorite charity would have helped), then the deal is done.

Nike might be the world's most recognizable brand, but it is trumped in this case by brand-name football. Notre Dame-Ohio State would pit two frontrunners for the 2006 Heisman (Brady Quinn vs. Troy Smith). The Close to the Sweater-Vest Offense vs. The Smartest Coach in the World. The luck of the Irish vs. the Luckeyes.

Who can forget Ohio State's 12th man (Big 12 official Terry Porter in the 2002 national championship game)?

After much hand-wringing, the Fiesta does the right and obvious thing. Sorry Ducks.

I wouldn't want to play PSU again. Not that I wouldn't like the chance to beat them, but I'd much rather see how OSU fares against Va Tech or ND.
I'd rather have PSU also win a BCS bowl, and make the Big Ten look even mightier. PSU has a lot to rebuild next year, and we can hand it to them in our house, so I'm not worried about letting them have the glory/fame of winning the bowl.
With the way NBC has gone down hill, do you think they'll try to get Notre Dame to start playing on Thursday nights at 8:00PM? :wink2:
not sure the ND ratings have ever been low, even during the horrible years.

I saw a post by a Texas fan on another web site. He was hoping for USC to lose so Texas could somehow play Penn State in the Rose bowl. He said it would be a "3fer" as far as Texas beating up on the big three of the Big Ten conference. It fricking made me want to puke. You take away the dropped ball by the tight end in the end zone and OSU wins that game. Scum wasn't that good the year they played Texas. Also, the Big 12 is a weak conference as evidenced by todays 70-3 beating of Colorado. I hope OSU goes into Texas stadium next year and sticks some longhorns up their big Texas ass....

Why does that make you sick? That would be a pretty good "3fer" Texas beat Big 10 champion scUM...they went into Columbus and found a way past the Buckeyes...and then beating Penn State in one of their best years in recent history? Are you kidding me? Texas is awesome. Texas is better than Ohio State. They won all their games, and after doing what they did this season...they have a right to talk. I'll be rooting for Texas in the Rose Bowl for sure...but I do hope we beat them next year of course. But I don't hate them or anything...they are a great team.

I have to agree with this assessment:

4. Ohio State (9-2)
Ohio State was this close to playing in Pasadena. It seems like eons ago, but the Buckeyes not only battled Texas; they should’ve won. A top five finish, and possible a spot in the top three, would be a very, very nice season even with the disappointments against Texas and Penn State.

Best wins:
1) at Michigan 25-21, 2) Iowa 31-6 … Worst loss: at Penn State 17-10

CollegeFootballNews.com hates Oregon. They ranked them 14th behind West Virginia and Michigan.

Nah, CFN just realizes that Oregon's played exactly one good team all year, and they were crushed in that game. CFN is probably like me in that they don't reward a 10 win season when those 10 wins don't come against ANY ranked teams. I think having them at 14 is about right.
