Ilie Van Enelen picks up the 4th point and seals the Buckeye victory with a straight set win at #3 singles.
Victory #67 in a row in Big Ten play!
The match will probably last a while because it appears that PSU only has 4 courts to play 6 singles matches.

Way to go Bucks!

The recap of the Buckeyes victory at PSU is on the OSU Tennis Site

The No. 3 Ohio State men's tennis team opened conference play with a 7-0 shutout victory at Penn State Friday afternoon. The win extends the Buckeyes' Big Ten win streak to 67 matches. The team also has won 48 consecutive road matches.
Ohio State moves to 19-5 all-time vs. the Nittany Lions. Head coach Ty Tucker maintained his unblemished record against Penn State, improving to 13-0. The Scarlet and Gray has not suffered a loss to the Blue and White since the 1998-99 campaign.
The match marked the first of seven consecutive road contests for the Buckeyes. The next six contests will be against ranked opponents.
Freshman Ille Van Engelen nabbed his 10th-career win, handing Bryan Welnetz a 6-2, 6-3 loss at No. 3 to net the victory for the Buckeyes.
In doubles action, freshman Blaz Rola and senior Balazs Novak teamed up for the first time this season and the decision proved successful as the Buckeye duo won, 8-3, over Welnetz and Chris Hasyn at No. 1.
At No. 1, the 12th-ranked team of senior Matt Allare and freshman Peter Kobelt defeated Eddie Bourchier and Russell Bader, 8-5, to earn the doubles point for the Scarlet and Gray. Allare and Kobelt move to 14-4 as a team, including a 5-1 mark at when competing at the No. 1 position.

Tough news for the Buckeyes today from two fronts:
On the Tennis side, the ITA rankings release came out today using the computer formula for the first time of the season, and predictably the Buckeyes got dropped.
ITA team rankings
Rank . Avg. . . . .School . . . . . . . . . . . . . LW

The ITA site doesn't list the criteria for its secret ranking "formula" but it is obvious that high profile wins are highly valued, losses don't cost or count against you too much.
It just seems bizarre that tOSU is so far behind Texas for 3rd, trails 9-4 Duke, and is only marginally ahead of Illinois and USC for 6th and 7th position.

Buckeyes defeated #3 Texas head to head, and also have wins against #9 Georgia, #18 Texas Tech, #22 Old Miss, #27 Louisville, #30 North Carolina, and #34 UC Irvine. Buckeyes sole loss was to #1 Virginia.

#4 Duke is 9-4 and has 4 losses to #12 Tsun, #2 Tenn twice, and #6 Illinois. They also have victories over #7 USC, #12 TSUN, #13 Pepperdine, #15 Florida, #25 Notre Dame, #58 VCU, unranked Elon, NC Central, and Un. of Hawaii.

#3 Texas has wins over #6 Illinois, #11 Kentucky, #12 TSUN, #14 California, #17 Texas A & M, #33 Tulsa and #37 Rice. The sole loss was to tOSU.

The Official site also released its report on the upcoming trip to Texas A & M.

The No. 3 Ohio State men's tennis team returns to the road after winning its first Big Ten contest of the season March 4 at Penn State, 7-0. The Buckeyes (15-1, 1-0) will travel to College Station, Texas, Thursday to face the No. 18 Texas A&M Aggies (11-3, 0-0). The match is the second of seven consecutive road contests for Ohio State. Including the match vs. the Aggies, the next six opponents are all ranked in the ITA polls.
The Buckeyes are 55-2 when they are the No. 3 ranked team in the country.
Fans can follow the action with live updates at www.ohiostatebuckeyes.com. To access the updates, select the schedule tab from the men's tennis homepage. . . .

Scouting the Aggies
Texas A&M enters the contest with an impressive 11-3 overall record. The Aggies have yet to play a Big 12 opponent. Texas A&M started the season winning four of its five contests, with the only loss occurring at No. 5 Texas. At the ITA National Team Indoors Championship in Seattle, Wash., the team fell, 4-1m to No. 4 Illinois and, 4-2, to Washington. The Aggies bounced back with a 4-2 victory over rival No. 19 Texas Tech. Including the win vs. the Red Raiders, Texas A&M has reeled off five wins in a row. The last four have come against No.68 TCU, No.53 LSU, No.24 Notre Dame and Wisconsin.
Buckeyes vs. Texas A&M
Ohio State is 2-2 all-time vs. the Aggies, with both wins happening under head coach Ty Tucker.
Last season No. 3 Ohio State defeated Texas A&M, 4-3, for the third-consecutive year. No. 23 Chase Buchanan downed No. 16 Austin Krajicek 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) at No. 1. No. 30 Justin Kronauge beat Alexis Klegou 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 to claim the victory for the Scarlet and Gray.
Ohio State vs. the Big 12
The Buckeyes travel to College Station with a 9-4 record all-time vs. teams hailing from the Big 12. Ohio State has played one Big 12 opponent since their meeting last year vs. the Aggies, defeating No.14 Texas Tech, 4-1, during the ITA National Team Indoor Championship event in Seattle, Wash., Feb. 18-21.
Big Ten Best
Ohio State currently is on a 67 match win streak in the Big Ten after the victory over Penn State last week. Entering the season, the Buckeyes have amassed five-consecutive Big Ten regular-season and tournament titles. Coach Tucker has also nabbed Big Ten Coach of the Year every year during the span as well. Last season, Ohio State recorded a combined Big Ten singles mark of 58-2 and a total Big Ten doubles record of 18-8. In addition to the 67 consecutive match win streak in conference play, the Buckeyes also have been a winner in 119 of its last 124 league contests, including postseason play.
Looking for Road Win No. 50
After defeating No. 19 North Carolina earlier this season, 6-1, and Penn State last week, Ohio State enters the match vs. Texas A&M this weekend on a 49 consecutive regular season (non-tournament) road win streak. The last road loss for the Buckeyes occurred at Notre Dame during the 2005-06 season where they fell to the Fighting Irish, 5-2.
Success in DualsOhio State has been dominant so far throughout the 2011 schedule in dual action. In singles, the Buckeyes are a combined 81-8 (.910). Senior Balazs Novak paces the squad with 14 victories. Chase Buchanan and Devin McCarthy each have 12, while freshman Blaz Roala has 11.
In doubles, the Scarlet and Gray are a combined 35-11 (.760). Senior Matt Allare leads the way with a 10-4 mark, while Novak and McCarthy are right behind at 10-3 and 11-3, respectively.
Last season, Ohio State finished with a combined dual-record of 160-32 (.833) in singles and was 85-20 (.810) in doubles.
Eight Buckeyes Ranked in Latest PollNew Campbell/ITA College Tennis Rankings were released Tuesday March 1.
Senior co-captain Balazs Novak marked the biggest improvement of any Buckeye, entering the rankings for the first time this season at No. 76, partly because of his then 13-match win streak.
Junior Chase Buchanan, who was ranked 21st in the Feb. 14 standings and 63rd in the inaugural standings, jumped seven places to No. 14. Freshman Blaz Rola moved up one spot to No. 4 after he was initially ranked seventh Jan. 4. Senior Matt Allare jumped six spots to No. 39, while redshirt-sophomore Devin McCarthy is 46th, improving nine places.
A trio of freshmen round out the rankings for the Scarlet and Gray. Peter Kobelt had a large gain, jumping 23 spots from 86th to 63rd. Nelson Vick broke the century barrier moving to No. 95, while Ille Van Engelen sits at No. 112.
In the doubles poll, the teams of Rola-Buchanan and Allare-Kobelt each dropped two spots in the rankings. Rola and Buchanan fell to No. 8, while Allare and Kobelt now sit at No. 12. The duo of Novak and McCarthy form the No. 76th team in the March 1 release. . . .
Up Next
The Buckeyes will take a week off for finals before heading west to Malibu, Calif., March 21 to take on the No. 15 Pepperdine Waves. Ohio State holds a 4-1 advantage all-time vs. Blue and Orange.

From the ITA website the release of the weekly rankings from women's tennis has no doubt aroused a bit more ire about the fairness of the rankings formula. See how the ITA explains/justifies a clear rankings deficiency!
If the Buckeye fans are upset about being unfairly positioned in the men's ITA rankings, Stanford ladies should be doubly so.
Link
While the heated battle for No. 1 in the women's Campbell/ITA Rankings rages on with Florida holding just a one-point lead over Stanford.
Stanford actually posted a head-to-head win over Florida in the ITA Women's Team Indoor Final but UF can thank the strength of the Atlantic Coast Conference as the Lady Gators have defeated four ACC opponents who reside in the top 10.

ITA better get this formula fixed and fast! Don't mess with the ladies!
Florida at 11-1 is ranked #1 by the computer formula, their only loss was by a 4-2 score vs. (12-0) Stanford in the championships of the ITA indoor tournament. Yet unbelievably based on the quality of ACC opponents Gators are #1.
So with (12-1) tOSU dropping to #5 behind (9-4) Duke and the (11-1) Texas team they defeated 4-1 at the ITA quarters makes me go,

Ty has his work cut out on a tough road trip in March, OSU will need to add 3 quality wins at #17 Texas A& M, at #13 Pepperdine, and at #6 Illinois to have any remote chance of overtaking Texas for a coveted 3 seed into the NCAA team championships.
The good news is that Texas managed to lose yesterday to #30 North Carolina (a "common opponent" OSU defeated UNC in Feb.).
However based on the 4 Duke losses, Texas' loss to UNC may not negatively affect enough to drop UT the 9 points which would allow tOSU to overtake them. :mad1:

ITA fix your formula!
If you would like to protest the rankings formula, you might try this email.

I sent my letter of critique to the ITA email adress yesterday and received back a request from the ITA to petition Lee Junior College admins who are planning to drop women's tennis from their school athletic programs.
Don't mess with ladies tennis!
Maybe their email return was just a coincidence but I don't think they are significantly motivated to correct an inadequate and defective computer ranking formula, yet.:(

The Buckeyes are in College Station and will have their big showdown with the #18 Aggies tonight at 7 pm. They really need the computer points from a win to move up in the computer rankings. Would love to see them at #3 or even #2 by the time of the NCAA championships in May.

The Buckeye v. Aggie match progress can be monitored on livestats and action from all 6 courts can be viewed on their live video feed.

The audio feed sounds like wind may be a factor in the match tonight.

Buckeyes dropped their first outdoor match to the #17 Aggies tonight by a 4-0 score.
Overall a tough fought match with the double's point decided at #3 and 3 first set tie breakers in singles.
Bucks will be off a week and then back on the road at Pepperdine.

Coach Tucker took the team to Texas early to give them some extra outdoor practice in preparation for the match.
Not trying to make excuses for the Buckeye's showing yesterday but I believe it will take them some time for the transition from indoor to outdoor peak performance levels. Pepperdine will be a huge test next week. (Does it ever rain in southern California)?
In trying to analyze the results from the ITA indoors at Washington in Feb. Warm weather teams like USC, Pepperdine, Stanford, Texas, Florida underperformed. Cold weather (indoor) teams UVA, tOSU, Illinois produced better results.
This is the report of the Texas A & M match yesterday from the tOSU tennis website.

The fifth-ranked Ohio State men?s tennis team dropped a 4-0 decision at Texas A&M Thursday evening at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center in College Station, Texas. The Buckeyes fall to 15-2 overall (1-0 Big Ten) on the season, while the Aggies improve to 12-3.

It was the first road loss for the Scarlet and Gray since a 5-2 setback (non-tournament) at Notre Dame in 2006. Entering the match Thursday, both teams were knotted up at two each in the all-time series. Both wins by the Buckeyes have come under head coach Ty Tucker.

In a match that featured nine ranked singles players and five doubles tandems, the Buckeyes opened play dropping the doubles point. The Ohio State tandem of Blaz Rola and Chase Buchanan, ranked eighth in the country, earned the lone win, beating Junior Ore and Alexey Grigorov, 8-6, at the No. 2 position.

The 12th-ranked pair of Matt Allare and Peter Kobelt lost a close 8-6 decision to No. 3 Jeff Dadamo and Austin Krajicek at No. 1 doubles, while No. 75 Balazs Novak and Devin McCarthy fell, 8-6, to No. 45 Colin Hoover and Alberto Bautista at No. 3.

The Buckeyes were looking to rally from a 1-0 deficit for the third time this season. At the ITA National Team Indoor Championship in Seattle, Wash., Feb. 18-21, Ohio State rebounded from a doubles point loss on two occasions vs. Texas Tech and Texas. However, no such occurrence would happen as Texas A&M won three consecutive singles matches to clinch the victory.

Krajicek, ranked 38th in the singles polls, downed No. 14 Buchanan 7-6, 6-1 at the top spot. No. 80 Alexis Klegou defeated No. 76 Novak 7-5, 6-3, at No. 2 singles, while Bautista bettered McCarthy 6-4, 6-3 at No. 4 singles to lead the Aggies to victory.

The Buckeyes will look to rebound from the loss with a match at Pepperdine at 4 p.m. ET March 21 in Malibu, Calif.

Seems like God is exacting some nasty vengeance on those demonized computer polls.
After Tennessee (15-2) jumped undefeated (17-0) Virginia in the 3/15 ranking, they "voluntarily" lost at #31 Baylor. Justice served!
Lots of eyebrows were raised when Tennessee had "earned" enough computer points to overtake Virginia for the #1 position in the 3/15 rankings; this in spite of UVa's head to head shut out victory at the ITA indoor championship.
At (15-2) tOSU's jump from #5 to #4 came in spite of a loss last week at Texas A& M;
The Aggies also jumped from #17 to #7 in the rankings after wins vs. tOSU and Illini.
Usc (13-2) has recovered from 2 losses at the ITA indoors to climb above the Buckeyes for the #3 ranking.
Texas (11-3) suffered 2 critical losses at UNC and at USC last week to drop to #6.
A new face in the top ten emerged this week, the (8-3) Califonia Golden Bears with wins over Duke and Pepperdine moved from 14th to just a fraction of points behind the Buckeyes at #5.

A Look Back
The Buckeyes lost their first non-tournament road match of the season and first since 2006 March 10 at No. 17 Texas A&M by a score of 4-0 at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center. Pepperdine enters the contest with a 13-3 overall record. Pepperdine started the season winning 11 of its first 13 contests, with the only loss occurring at No. 14 Duke, 4-3, and No. 2 USC, 5-2. Looks like they expect the rain to clear out by 6 pm to start the match out doors.

The double's point was claimed with 3 Buckeye victories.
At #2 doubles a new tandem of Chase Buchanan and Shuhei Uzawa dominated by an 8-0 score.
At #3 doubles Balazs Novak and Blas Rola prevailed by an 8-4 score.

In the single's portion of the contest, Matt Allare at #4 singles finished first with an impressive 6-3, 6-4 victory.

At the #2 single's position, Blaz Rola fought back from a 5-2 third set deficit against the #17 ranked Sebastian Fanselow to claim victory in a tie breaker and earn the 6th point in a 6-1 Buckeye win over Pepperdine.
On the season the Buckeye's move to 16-2. Pepperdine drops to 14-5.

Congratulations Buckeyes on a hard earned victory that appeared easier on the score board than on the court!
Will post the link and an excerpt of the OSU official article when it is available.
Next up for the men's tennis team is a road trip to Iowa City to face the #74 ranked Hawkeyes on Friday March 25, at 3 pm.
Sunday, 3/27, 1 pm, the Buckeyes will return via Champaign Urbana for a show down with the best of the Big Ten, #4 nationally ranked OSU vs. #9 Illinois.
