You have made a very interesting observation Litl! many tOSU almuni and sports fans have this assumption that athletes at tOSU are all getting a full ride, but in reality to balance the total distribution between men's and women's sports men's tennis is alloted only 4 1/2 scholarships.
Here is the 2009 varsity roster of the tennis team according to the OSU official site.

Men's tennis has 10 players on its roster and 4 1/2 scholarships alloted for its team since Title IX kicked in. I can't reveal the math but scholarships are usually creatively managed so that scholar athletes in tennis are ususally offered scholarships in portions (1/4, 1/2 or full ride) to account for the 4 1/2 total.
Two observations:
1. I am amazed at how Ty is able to attract the quality of student athletes (preseason ranked #1 in NCAA) with only 4 1/2 full scholarships available.

2. I have a great respect and give credit to the scholar athletes and families for picking up part or all of the tab on their college eductation.:oh:

I could not agree with you more that Coach Tucker is doing an outstanding job in getting true student athletes and the players and families should be appropriately commended. I would imagine that some of the players getting 1/4 of a scholarship probably could get a full ride or more of a scholarship at a different school.:io:

I know that Buchanan is one of the best junior tennis players in the world. He has qualifiers for the U.S. Open Junior tournament, French Open Junior Tournament, and I think one of the other majors. I guess what I don't understand is that he travels all over the country during the school year playing tennis and I don't even think that he is at his high school very much so I don't understand how he is getting his high school education.

He is home schooled... many top juniors who travel have to get their high school degrees this way. He would still have to take the SAT or ACT to get into college which carries just as much or more weight than grades.

As part of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend, the No. 1 Ohio State men?s tennis team is one of 15 schools to host the qualifying rounds of the ITA National Team Indoor Championships Jan. 31 - Feb. 1 at The Ohio State University Varsity Tennis Center. This event showcases the top 60 men's varsity teams in the country squaring off at 15 campus sites.
The 15 men's teams to win both of their matches this weekend will be invited to play in the ITA National Team Indoor Championships, Feb. 13-16, in Chicago, Ill.
In the first match, Ohio State will face Stetson Saturday, while Virginia Tech battles against New Mexico. Two matches are guaranteed and the winners/losers will play each other in the second matches Sunday.

In the first round of the ITA tournament hosted at the OSU Varsity Tennis Center, the No. 1 ranked OSU men's team defeated Stetson 7-0.
The OSU men's team will advance to the 2nd round Sunday 2/1 to face the winner of Virginia Tech and New Mexico.
The winners of Sunday's championship bracket will be invited to the field of 16 at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships at the Midtown Tennis Club in Chicago, Feb. 13-16.

I thought that Stanford was going to scale back their athletic program due to the economy. Guess not with the endowments that they have. They must have commitments from 4 of the best 25 juniors in the country or maybe they went worldwide like they do in some other nonrevenue sports.

Stanford by NCAA law is limited to 4 1/2 scholarships for Tennis student athletes (like every D1 school).
You must be referring to this article when suggesting their cutbacks.

Looks like their financial strains (decline in income from invested endowments) have not impacted their athletics scholarship endowments though.
Re. the commitments for 2009, Yep you are right Litl, they are impressive! They have 3 in the top 25 (Kandath #7, Lyn #16, and Kehrer #21) and Ecker #181.

Steven Moneke a senior captain and 2 time All American sits at No. 3 in the NCAA standings, and is 4th in career single's victories for tOSU.

He shares his thoughts on Ohio State's No. 1 ranking and the Buckeyes' upcoming road trip to No. 22 North Carolina Friday and No. 21 Wake Forest Sunday.
