Great that they pulled this out. What a streak!

Closer than they thought. The guys tired or did Wisconsin play above themselves today?

Maybe a little of both?
Wisconsin obviously was primed and eager for the upset.
1. Senior day in Madison with 3 key senor captain leaders being honored.
2. Motivation to end a Buckeye win streak began with the doubles. the double's portion was tied at 1-1. The #1 double's team of Wisconsin ranked #16 in the ITA's captured the 8-8 tie breaker to gain the victory and claim the double's point.
3. Marcan seems to be struggling (tired?). As noted earlier by OSU/D Ty has dropped him in the lineup. A more favorable opponent at #3 singles was still too much for Dino.
4. Allare sometimes just runs into inconsistency and it looked like he did that today. I am sure Allare was upset with his performance especially until Kronauge sealed the match.

On the positive side;
Novak, played extremely well against a strong Wisconsin #4 player, Freeman. Freeman had a streak of victories that were stopped by Balazs today.
Shuhei came up with a major victory at #5, straight sets that should improve his confidence going into the Big Ten tournament.
What can you say about Chase Buchanan! He demolished #28 ranked Michalicka, Wisconsin's #1 player surrendering only 2 games in the straight set victory.
And finally Justin Kronauge showed why he is captain, so highly respected, and the all time combined wins leader in tOSU history. After dropping a tough 1st set tie breaker he battled back with 6-3, 6-3 sets to defeat the #19 ranked Baumann, securing the 4-3 victory for the Buckeyes.

Pulling out such a close win just may be the perfect thing for this team after all the previous blowouts and this long winning streak. Not saying that they were getting complacent, but rather that this could be the not-so-subtle reminder that no matter how good they are all it takes is one bad day to ruin the season from here out...

Buckeyes win fifth consecutive conference crown

Victory over Wisconsin reported on the OSU tennis site:

Tied at 3-3 in the last regular-season match of the 2010 season, the Ohio State men's tennis team picked up four singles victories en route to a 4-3 win over No. 27 Wisconsin and its fifth-consecutive outright Big Ten regular-season title Sunday at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison. Senior Justin Kronauge, ranked 40th in the nation, won back-to-back sets over No. 19 Moritz Baumann (6-7, 6-3, 6-3) at No. 2 singles to clinch the match for the Buckeyes. Ohio State finishes the regular-season undefeated (29-1 overall; 10-0 Big Ten) in conference play for the fifth straight year.

"We knew it was going to be a tough match for us," Kronauge, who has won 21 consecutive matches this year, said. "We didn't get the doubles point, but we had guys who could step up in the clutch. I'm glad I could get the win for the team. This is huge for me. In my last regular-season match of my career, it's a very special moment." . . .

"It was a tough match in tough conditions," Tucker said. "I'm very proud of Justin with his performance today and now we need to get refocused and prepare for the Big Ten Tournament next week.". . .

With the undefeated record in Big Ten regular-season play, Ohio State will receive the No.1-seed in the 2010 Big Ten Tournament April 29-May 2, in Bloomington, Ind.

Nice Win...6th straight title IIRC!!!! Hats off to Wisky for playing tough.

It seems like more but it is only 5 straight. Illinois won the regular season and tournament title in 2005 and the Buckeyes have prevailed ever since.

Report on the draws, seedings and schedule from the Big Ten Tournament April 29-May 2.

New ITA rankings, OSU remains in 4th spot nationally.

The April 26 ITA national team rankings were released today and the Buckeyes held on to the #4 position among NCAA Div. 1 colleges.
In terms of accumulative points, tOSU trails 3rd place Texas by a little over 3 points, 75.38 to 72.18.
The Buckeye lead over 5th place USC decreased to about 1.3 points.
UVA, USC and Tennessee have all finished their regular season--UVA won the ACC tournament, Tennessee ripped through the SEC tournament without losing a point and have almost passed #1 UVA for highest ranking in the latest ITA poll.
Unfortunately, it doesn't appear that tOSU can gain enough points through the upcoming Big Ten tournament to jump Texas for the #3 seed in the NCAA tournament. If Texas wins the Big 12 tournament as expected, tOSU will likely be the #4 seed for the NCAA's. It would be nice to avoid a quarterfinal vs. a #5 seed USC and a semifinal with #1 seed UVA, but if the draw is done according to design that is what will happen.
Guess you have to beat them somewhere, and sooner is as good as later.

In the April 26 ITA men's single's rankings, Chase Buchanan improved to 9th place and Justin Kronauge jumped from 40th to 31st position. Kronauge's jump primarily came as a result of his victory over #22 ranked Moritz Baumann of Wisconsin on Sunday.
Dino Marcan dropped off the top 125 single's rankings, but Devin McCarthy and Steven Williams are still ranked at #117 and #124 respectfully.

Chase Buchanan and Dino Marcan dropped from #10 to the 15th ranked pair in the April 26th ITA Doubles Rankings.

Following the team tournament finals May 20-24, in Athens, Georgia, the NCAA hosts a singles and doubles competition 5/25-5/31, with a draw of the top 64 individual singles' players and the top 32 double's teams.
Both Kronauge and Buchanan's placement in the ITA single's rankings should favorably place and seed them in the NCAA single's tournament. Fans would love to see these Buckeyes make a deep run against the nation's best.
Buchanan and Marcan should also receive a seed into the draw of the NCAA double's tournament.
Last year tOSU's Steven Moneke had a strong run in the single's tournament, finished his OSU career by advancing to the finals, but lost to freshman (now professional) Devin Britton of U Miss.
Britton as a senior in high school was actually ranked below fellow senior Chase Buchanan by Tennisrecruiting.net.
Go Bucks!

From the BigTen.org website:
For the 11th time this year a Buckeye tennis player has been recognized as the Big Ten athlete of the week.

Justin Kronauge earns Big Ten Athlete of the Week status for the sixth time in his career after clinching the outright Big Ten Championship for Ohio State over the weekend and finishing with an individual conference mark of 10-0 in singles play. On Friday against Northwestern, he knocked off Spencer Wolf in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0, as the Buckeyes clinched at least a share of their fifth-straight Big Ten Championship. In doubles action over the weekend, Kronauge and teammate Balazs Novak defeated Northwestern?s Andrew McCarthy and Sidarth Balaji, 8-2, and Wisconsin?s Chris Freeman and Luke Kantor, 8-4.

Big Ten honors Chase Buchanan 2010 athlete of the year.

OSU Tennis Website

Chase Buchanan, a sophomore on the No. 4 Ohio State men's tennis team, was named Big Ten Athlete of the Year, while head coach Ty Tucker earned his fifth-consecutive Big Ten Coach of the Year laurel Thursday in Bloomington, Ind.
Joining Buchanan on the 2010 All-Big Ten Team were senior co-captain Justin Kronauge (unanimous) and freshman Dino Marcan.
Senior co-captain Mike O'Connell received the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award for Ohio State.

With the athlete of the year honor, Buchanan becomes the first sophomore in Ohio State history to earn the conference's top honor.
The Buckeyes have won the award the past three seasons. Last year, Bryan Koniecko became the first Buckeye and just the third Big Ten student-athlete to earn the conference's top honor in back-to-back seasons.
Buchanan is the third Buckeye to win the conference's player of the year award, joining Koniecko (2008 and 2009) and Vince Ng who received the award in 2003.
Currently ranked ninth in the nation by the ITA, Buchanan was a perfect 10-0 in singles and 9-1 in doubles play during the Big Ten regular season. A native of New, Albany, Ohio, Buchanan was 26-4 overall, including a 21-1 mark at No. 1 singles. He posted a 15-4 record vs. nationally-ranked opponents during the 2010 spring season.
During the year, Buchanan accumulated six Big Ten Athlete of the Week honors (Feb. 2, Feb. 23, March 9, March 16, April 6, and April 13) to lead the league in weekly awards.

Buckeyes are becoming the dominant force in Big Ten Tennis!

Congratulations Chase, Justin, Dino, Mike and Ty on some Big Ten honors well deserved!
