COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State hits the road for the first time this season as the No. 1 Buckeyes will take on No. 9 Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, N.C. on Thursday evening and No. 5 Virginia in Charlottesville, Va., on Saturday afternoon.
- The Buckeyes are coming off a pair of sweeps of No. 23 Texas A&M and No. 6 Texas last weekend and are now 9-0 on the season, surrendering just one point on the season.
- Thursday’s match with Wake Forest will be the 16th all-time meeting between the two programs. The Buckeyes lead the series 11-3 and have won 10 of the last 11 meetings. That includes a 4-1 win in the second round of the 2021 NCAA Tournament in Winston-Salem and a pair of sweeps last season. The lone loss in that stretch came in the finals of the 2018 NCAA Tournament.
- Ohio State and Virginia will also be meeting for the 16th time overall this weekend. Virginia leads the all-time series 9-6. The teams have split the last eight meetings dating back to 2012. The Buckeyes swept Virginia 4-0 last season in Columbus.
- Wake Forest is undefeated on the season at 10-0 with ranked wins over No. 6 Tennessee and No. 23 Auburn. Virginia, who ranked No. 1 the last four weeks, lost to Kentucky last Friday night for its first loss this season. The Cavaliers are 7-1 overall with a 4-0 win over No. 11 Baylor under their belt.
- Ohio State moved up to No. 1 in the latest ITA Rankings on Feb. 8. This is the first time the Buckeyes have been ranked No. 1 since spending 13 weeks ranked No. 1 at the end of the 2019 season. In all, this is the fifth season in which the Buckeyes have ascended to the top spot in the rankings.
- Five Buckeyes find themselves ranked in the singles and doubles rankings. JJ Tracy leads the way as he is ranked No. 9 in singles and No. 1 in doubles with Andrew Lutschaunig. Tracy is a team-best 13-4 on the season in singles and 15-2 in doubles.
- James Trotter, the reigning Big Ten Athlete of the Week, is ranked No. 28 in singles and is ranked No. 25 in doubles with Lutschaunig.
- Lutschaunig and Tracy are the top-ranked doubles team in the country, despite playing just one match together this spring. The duo wont he ITA Fall National Doubles title and last fall. Lutschaunig is 12-2 this year in doubles and one of four players in the country to be ranked on multiple doubles teams.
- Freshman Alexander Bernard jumps from No. 90 at the end of the fall to No. 41 in the latest singles rankings. He is 9-1 on the year and has wins at the Nos. 2, 3 and 4 positions this season.
- Robert Cash has been extremely impressive so far this year and checks in at No. 75 in the singles rankings. He is 7-0 in singles and 8-0 in doubles this season.
- These will be the final two matches before the Buckeyes head to the ITA Indoor Team National Championships next weekend. This year’s tournament will be at the XS Tennis Village in downtown Chicago on Feb. 17-20.
