Ohio State Men's Tennis (2014/2019/2024 ITA Indoor National Champs, 17 Straight B1G Titles)

The seasons initial ITA poll of ncaa div 1 tennis teams opens with Buckeyes at the #5 position.

From the official OSU tennis site.
http://www.ohiostatebuckeyes.com/sports/m-tennis/spec-rel/010615aaa.html

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The first ITA National rankings of the 2015 season are out and the Ohio State men's tennis team is ranked No. 5. The Buckeyes finished the 2014 season in the same spot.

Individually, junior Chris Diaz is ranked No. 21 to start the season. Diaz had a solid fall as he advanced to the finals of the consolation bracket at the ITA All-American Championships in early October.

Sophomore Ralf Steinbach was the Buckeyes highest ranked player in the fall at No. 62 and he will start the spring at No. 66. Freshman Mikael Torpegaard, on the back of his singles victory at the ITA Midwest Regional, is ranked No. 89.

In doubles, the Buckeye tandem of Steinbach and Kevin Metka enter the spring ranked No. 4 in the country. The duo was 9-3 this fall and advanced after advancing to the finals of ITA Midwest Regionals and winning the consolation bracket at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships.

Diaz is also ranked with doubles partner Hunter Callahan. The two are ranked No. 21 in the first poll. Diaz and Callahan have a 4-2 record with a win over No. 25 Harrison Adams and Shane Vinsant of Texas A&M.

Re: 11. Illinois

Just sayin': Kind of surprised Illinois isn't ranked higher. "3/29/15 at Illinois" will be a "tough match"; too bad we don't get them here.

Great observation Script, because like you I also would contend that Illini seem to have a more legitimate claim to a better ranking,... more highly ranked singles players, doubles teams, more highly rated incoming freshman, than Buckeyes. in fact that may have been true in Spring 2014...
However the best talent does not always deliver in match performance,
Sometimes like "shock the world UFM," coaching matters,
In tennis, fitness and conditioning, "coaching up" talent, how practices are run, in-match inspiration, and court strategy will take athletes from good to great.
Kevin Metka, Peter Kobelt, Ralf Steinbach, Blaz Rola and Devin McCarthy are testament to a significant performance bump during their Buckeye careers.
I believe we will see a couple others break through this year.
Only logical explanation for OSU's claim to 9 straight conference championships, 180+ NCAA record home win streak--COACHING!
I will take Ty Tucker over Brad Dancer, May be going out on a limb here, but Tuck is worth at least 3-5% bump in athlete's performance, and in tennis play that is huge.

"Hugo Di Feo was a Top 20 ranked junior in the world who competed in all of the junior grand slams,” Tucker said. “We feel his skill and toughness on the court will improve our team immediately. He has played well on the professional circuit and earned some ATP points so he should be able to transition easily to the college game. I know a degree from Ohio State is very important to him and his family. The coaching staff is very excited about our future with Hugo.”

Gracelhink's projections on Single's lineup for 2015 Buckeyes:
#6 a battle between Chris Diaz/Metka, Matt Mendez, Marko Goles-Babic, Riley Reist.
#5 Kevin Metka/Chris Diaz
#4 Hunter Callahan
#3 Ralf Steinbach
#2 Herkko Polannen (a year in the Tucker development program will be huge!)
#1 Hugo Di Feo (yes he is that good)

Buckeyes sweep a pair of 7-0 wins from nku and ysu to extend their win streak at home to 193.
Next up a double dip on Wednesday, before the weekend ITA qualifier.

Just wondering, what happened to Hugo Di Feo; he didn't play?

Good catch Script.
Di feo, Torp and Metka all sat out yesterday.
A new addition to the team is now listed on the official roster, Charlie Shewalter originally from Winchester, Ma, but listed on the OSU site from Bexley, Upper Arlington.

I believe he played at Upper Arlington last season. Not sure if he played their his junior year or not.

Apparently he played at UA as a junior, graduated from UA early, and just enrolled at Ohio State for the start of the Spring semester.

Re: The graduation of Stu Little leaves a void at first singles that Allison expects will be filled either by Melvin or junior Chuck Shewalter. Little finished third in singles last year in the state tournament after winning doubles titles as a freshman and sophomore.

Shewalter, who has committed to Ohio State, transferred from Boston College High School where he helped his team to the Division I state team title * last season. His father is an Upper Arlington graduate.

"He's good but nowhere as good as he wants to be," Allison said. "He and Jeffrey have been going back and forth for those top two singles spots. (Shewalter's) forehand is unorthodox, but it's effective. Chuck wants to make an impact right away."

*Good story on the Boston College High School state championship:

BC High edges St. John’s Shrewsbury for tennis title

Tennis_5.jpg

BC High’s Charles Shewalter, who is in his first year on the tennis team**, was the difference in the Division 1 title match.

The Pioneers battled against BC High, but were eventually done in by first-year singles player Charles Shewalter, who edged four-time Central Mass. singles champion Chris Ellis to put his team over the top.
.
.
.
Moments later, Shewalter prevailed, 6-4, 6-4.

Shewalter, 3-0 against Chris Ellis this year, played lacrosse last year as a freshman**. He opted to try a different sport and has been dominant all season.

“The Shewalter-Ellis match was a good one,” Hutchinson said. “Chris Ellis is a tremendous player for them and never gives up. Fortunately, Shewalter was able to get a couple of mistakes out of Chris and put the match away. He’s had a great season for us.”

**This is a 2013 article and implies he is just a soph. Anyway if he has only played competitive tennis for 2 years (2013 at BCHS and 2014 at UAHS), his potential/upside could really be huge.
