Ohio State Men's Tennis (2014/2019/2024 ITA Indoor National Champs, 17 Straight B1G Titles)

It is my understanding that after the Buckeyes lost to Illinois in the B1G tournament the following week Tucker had a 1 1/2 hour meeting with his team and really lit into them. Did not want to post anything but since the Columbus Dispatch has the article below I thought I would post what I have learned.

A pair of 4-0 wins over East Tennessee State and Notre Dame last weekend in the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament seemed to indicate that Ohio State had shaken the effects of one of the most disappointing yet motivating losses in program history.

Coach Ty Tucker didn?t see it that way,

?There was nothing good about it,? Tucker said of a 4-3 loss to Illinois in the Big Ten tennis championship match that ended the Buckeyes? 92-match conference winning streak.

?And I wouldn?t say we breezed through (last weekend),? Tucker said. ?Two guys were starting third sets against Notre Dame, and another guy was down a set. If you don?t read carefully through the box scores, you don?t see that.?

And so the Buckeyes, making their seventh straight appearance in the NCAA round of 16 today against Florida in Athens, Ga., are still stinging.
?By no means can we look ahead and say everything is solved,? Tucker said. ?We?re not so far removed from that Illinois match.? Pres.

The Big Ten loss was a reminder that more is expected of Ohio State, the No. 5 overall seed and perennially the top cold-climate team in college tennis. A warm-weather school has won every national championship but one since 1960, but the Buckeyes advanced to an NCAA semifinal last season and lost to Southern California in the final in 2009.

Good find Litl, Many people don't understand the anomaly that is OSU men's tennis, and the recruiting disadvantage of northern schools. The bolded section identifies what is so special about this team. The teams remaining in the quarterfinals of the NCAA's 2012 also reflect this truth.

Ty Tucker's coaching reputation is becoming universally acclaimed,
In retrospect back in 1999 buckeye men's tennis was an underperforming sport but for any major university, an uproven coach was still a risky hire. thank you Andy Geiger.

I'm sure Gene Smith would have hired an equally competent tennis coach too......cough...

Today's quarterfinal tOSU v. UCLA, NCAA tournament match with the winner advancing to a probable contest vs. USC in the semis, Noon start.

Probable lineup:
#5 Ohio State vs. #4 UCLA
Double's
1) #1 Chase Buchanan/Blaz Rola vs. #44 Alex Brigham/Adrien Puget
2) #32 Devin McCarthy/Ille Van Engelen vs. #85 Nick Meister/Dennis Novikov
3) Peter Kobelt/Connor Smith vs. Marcos Giron/Warren Hardie.

Single's
1. #10 Chase Buchanan vs. #62 Clay Thompson
2. #9 Blaz Rola vs. #16 Nick Meister
3. #67 Peter Kobelt vs. Dennis Novikov
4. Ille Van Engelen vs. #84 Marcos Giron
5. #85 Devin McCarthy vs. #46 Adrien Puget
6. #106 Connor Smith vs. Dennis Mkrtchian

UCLA is a strong and deep team, as evidenced by their victory over USC in the PAc 10 regular season.
Buckeyes are the sole remaining northern team traveling into the heat, they must survive a strong test of conditioning and endurance.

For the Buckeyes to get a win over #4 UCLA, they can and absolutely must win a key double's point.

Buckeyes should be favored at #1 and #2 single's, Coach Tucker is probably thinking he must have 2 victories at the top of the linup. Meister however, is very capable of an "upset" over Rola.
We could use a strong performance by Kobelt who is playing a talented Freshman. Novikov joined the team in April, has been playing lights out, should be ranked top 40, but does not have enough quality wins to make the ITA computers.
Giron and Puget may be too strong for Van Engelen and McCarthy at #4, 5. If McCarthy can get his aggresive game on, and get consistent, he is capable of a shocker however.
Tucker is likely depending heavily on a strong performance from Connor Smith to get a point at #6 for any hope of victory over UCLA.

Gracelhink prediction, I could see this as a 4-2 match with either team taking the victory. I will go out on a limb and say it will be 4-2 for the good guys with wins in dubs, and at #1, #2, and #3.

Buckeye tennis fans can monitor ttoday's action on UGa Livestats.

Going to be a tough doubles point. 1 & 3 are going according to serve but we are down 0-3 in 2nd doubles. 2nd doubles was broken, then had a chance to break back up 40-15 but couldn't finish. That resulted in a super long poing with a negative end.

Going to need #1 doubles to come through on this. #2 is getting beaten soundly and #3 now has a bit of breathing room.
