Sunday's quarterfinal match vs. UCLA will start at noon. The No. 5 seed Ohio State men?s tennis team improved to 34-3 on the season after beating No. 12 Florida 4-1 Friday in an NCAA Division I Men?s Tennis Championship Round of 16 match in Athens, Ga. The Buckeyes will face No. 4 UCLA , who downed No. 13 Ole Miss 4-1, at noon Sunday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
After dropping the first set 7-5, junior Connor Smith relinquished just one game in the final two sets to rally for the 5-7, 6-1, 6-0 victory and lift the Scarlet and Gray to their 32nd NCAA championship win under head coach Ty Tucker. Smith, who played at No. 6 singles, improves to 29-7 overall, including a 17-5 mark at the sixth position.
For the 34th time this season, Ohio State won the doubles point to jump out to a 1-0 lead. Redshirt sophomore Peter Kobelt and Smith recorded their 28th win of the season courtesy of an 8-3 triumph vs. Mike Alford and Florent Diep at No. 3 doubles. The No. 1 duo in the nation, senior Chase Buchanan and sophomore Blaz Rola, defeated the Gators? Tripper Carleton and Nassim Slilam 8-1 at the top spot to record their 31st win of the season and effectively score the first team point for Ohio State.
Moving on to singles action, Rola was the first Buckeye to conclude his match after handing Carleton a 6-4, 6-1 loss at the No. 2 position. With the win, Rola now has a team-leading 33 wins in 2011-12. For the season, Rola is 16-2 at No. 2.
The Gators cut the Ohio State lead in half (2-1) when Diep beat redshirt junior Devin McCarthy 6-4, 6-2 at No. 5 singles. However, the Buckeyes extended their lead to two once again (3-1) after Buchanan?s 6-3, 6-3 win vs. Bob van Overbeek at No. 1 singles. The win served as Buchanan?s 14th (14-2) at No. 1....

Head Coach Ty Tucker
?We were pretty fortunate to make it through the match. We started off with some high level doubles. We were able to secure the doubles point pretty quickly. We knew the toughest positions with Florida were singles. We knew we would have our hands full at 3 through 6 singles. We were in some trouble, but we put a lot of time in the practice court, and we have guys who like to compete, so I felt if we could make a move in the second set of a match we just needed to find one other point. Connor Smith was able to get a break at 2-1 and make it 3-1. (Mike Alford) had to take an injury time out and wasn?t able to compete his best from there are out. It obviously felt pretty good, but you had to feel for the kid who was in some pain and had to work his tail off. I give a lot of credit to Mike Alford. He kept playing.?
On being only Big Ten team remaining...
?We spend a lot of time playing indoor tennis. It?s trying times because when you get out side in the midwest in March and February, you?re dealing with 25 mph winds. You?re not getting great practice. It?s not as clean as you like it. We?re trying to run them and do everything possible we can to get them ready for the heat that we will face here. We have guys that know the importance of focusing on every point. Connor did what he needed to do.?
Ohio State?s Connor Smith
On playing with against injured opponent...
?I tried focusing on every point and block out what he was doing. Sometimes its tough, but you just have to keep swinging. It looked brutal. I?ve known him for a while ? we?re both from Tampa. I just told him I hoped he felt better.?
On adjustment after medical timeout...
?There is definitely an adjustment. The speed of the ball definitely changes. You have to change your footwork. You have to try to get every ball deep and keep him moving.?
Ohio State?s Chase Buchanan
?I tried not to look at the scoreboard as much as I could and tried to take care of my match. At one point, we were in trouble. A lot of the teammates bounced back well which was impressive. They were competing hard. I wasn?t really worried. WE practice a lot and we?re pretty prepared for this. I was happy with everything. The team played great.?
On the loss to Illinois...
?It gave us a lot of motivation over the last two weeks. We?ve had really good practices. It was a good wakeup call for the team.?

Connor Smith's final set vs. Alford in Ohio State's 4-1 win was a golden one. He got a game via penalty then won 20 points in a row #NCAAMWT
