Before honoring Chase Buchanan and Steven Williams on senior day, the No. 3 Ohio State men?s tennis team captured its seventh-consecutive outright Big Ten regular-season title with a 6-1 victory over No. 21 Michigan (16-6, 9-2) Sunday afternoon at the outdoor Varsity Tennis Courts.
Connor Smith?s 6-2, 6-2 win over Alex Buzzi sealed Ohio State?s 29th win (29-2, 11-0 Big Ten) of the season and 146th-consecutive victory in Columbus. Smith improved to 26-6 overall, including 15-4 record at the No. 6 position.
?We?re very fortunate to be on the run that we?ve been on these last seven years,? said Ty Tucker, Ohio State head coach. ?We couldn?t have done it without the support of the fans and the tremendous work put in by our team, especially seniors Chase [Buchanan] and Steven [Williams].?
In addition to winning its seventh-consecutive conference championship, the win vs. the Wolverines was Ohio State?s 90th-consecutive against Big Ten opponents.
The Buckeye duo of Peter Kobelt and Smith handed Buzzi and Barrett Franks an 8-4 loss on court two to begin the afternoon. Winners of eight consecutive matches, Kobelt and Smith have amassed 24 victories on the season.
The No. 1 pair of Buchanan and Blaz Rola beat No. 22 Evan King and Shaun Bernstein 8-3 to earn the doubles point for the Buckeyes. With the victory, Buchanan and Rola improve to 28-3 overall, including a 19-3 mark at No. 1 doubles.

At No. 3 doubles, No. 34 Devin McCarthy and Ille Van Engelen collected their team-high 30th win after beating Michael Zhu and Alex Petrone 8-4.

McCarthy lifted the Buckeyes to a 3-0 advantage after posting a 6-4, 6-1 triumph over Franks. The win was McCarthy?s 26th of the season (26-6) and 15th at the fifth position (15-2). Smith sealed the win shortly after.
In remaining singles play, Van Engelen was a 6-3, 6-1 winner over Michael Zhu, earning his 25th victory of the season. Buchanan, ranked No. 12, beat Petrone 6-3, 6-2 on court two in his final regular-season collegiate match, giving him a 36-1 record vs. Big Ten competition. The New Albany, Ohio, native currently boasts a 101-23 singles record in his career, including 45 wins vs. ranked opponents.

The 2012 Buckeye squad will be seeking to win their 7th consecutive Big Ten tournament after winning their 7th straight Big Ten regular season championship.

The suspense of the ITA computer rankings will be revealed tomorrow when the new rankings are released.
The gap between #2, 3, and 4 in the last ITA rankings was razor thin, with #5 UCLA lurking. The final rankings next Tuesday will determine the seeding in the NCAA team tournament in May, but for practical purposes this weeks rankings probably won't change much next week.
Most teams and conferences have completed their tournaments and schedules this weekend. The Big Ten tournament will finish next Sunday, but most opportunities to accumulate computer points are pretty well over.
USC and their all world lineup seem to be locks for the #1 seed in the tournament. #2 and #3 seeds are prized by contenders for the crown, they would avoid meeting USC until the finals.
The most recent significant events for the new rankings tomorrow:

* #5 UCLA upset #1 USC.
This will not cause USC to drop from #1 but will certainly increase the computer strength of UCLA.

* #4 UGA won the SEC Tournament championship,
and along the way to the title, Georgia collected major computer points with wins over #17 Auburn, #9 Miss. State, and #6 Kentucky. They will certainly jump tOSU in points and maybe Virginia also.

* #2 U Virginia won the ACC tournament
Along the the way to the title, tournament wins over #32 FSU and #8 Duke will increase UVA value.

* #3 tOSU had a quality win over #21 TSUN.
And will compete in the B1G tournament next weekend where OSU could potentially get a little value from another win over #21 TSUN.

Right now it appears that Georgia will be a lock for a #2 or #3 seed and the Buckeyes could be anywhere from #3 to #5, In order to keep from slipping to #5 they would have to hold off UCLA in points and to "stay" at #3 they would need to jump Virginia in the rankings.

Things will be extremely tight tomorrow in the ITA rankings, but more and more it looks like Buckeyes will be faced with a tall challenge in the NCAA tournament draw...
With a #4 or #5 seed they would obviously need to defeat USC in the semifinals and also need to face an incredibly HOT UCLA team in the quarters!

While the final rankings will be released next Monday, and the fact that .78 is not a large margin, there are no other opportunities for UVa (season finished) to gain points other than the reshuffling of value from opponent's rankings.

If tOSU can take care of business in the B1G tournament, they "should" lock up the #3 seed and avoid USC, UVa and UCLA in the semifinal region.

Would love to see Peter Kobelt advance a few more places in the rankings.

Top 64 ranked single's players receive invitations to the NCAA single's tournament in May.
I think Peter could make some noise in the tourney with his style of play.
Right now he is on the bubble, 3rd reserve on the list.

The bad news is that if we get to NCAA semifinals and it is #2 Georgia vs. #3 Ohio State; and we are playing the home team.
