Ohio State Men's Ice Hockey (2019 B1G Champions)

COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS PROSPECT, MIAMI (OHIO) TRANSFER CARSON MEYER GRANTED IMMEDIATE ELIGIBILITY TO PLAY FOR OHIO STATE

A sixth-round pick by the Blue Jackets in 2017, Meyer – a native of Powell, Ohio – scored 10 goals and had 16 assists for Miami as a freshman during the 2016-17 season. He had only six goals and four assists last season, however, after battling a tapeworm, as documented by The Athletic's Aaron Portzline.

Back healthy and eligible to play now, though, Meyer projects to be one of the Buckeyes' top forwards this upcoming season.

MEN’S HOCKEY IS NO. 1 IN BIG TEN PRESEASON POLL, NO. 3 OVERALL

96879_h.jpg

Greetings, hockey fans! It’s been a long hot summer but the season has finally turned, the ice is back in, and a brand new season of Buckeye hockey awesomeness is set to begin.

2017-18 brought an unprecedented level of success for the puck programs with both the men’s and women’s teams advancing to their respective Frozen Fours. And not only could the Bucks reach greater heights this season, but they’re also expected to.

The Big Ten today announced that Ohio State topped the conference coaches’ preseason poll. It is the first time the team has led the preseason Big Ten voting. It’s only the second time in program history that the Bucks have been the preseason conference favorite (CCHA, 2005-06).

The Scarlet and Gray also landed at No. 3 in the first national poll of the season. It is the highest preseason placement for Ohio State ever. USCHO pollsters sandwiched the Buckeyes between No. 2 Notre Dame and No. 4 Michigan. All three teams received two first-place votes each. Minnesota (No. 13) and Penn State (No. 16) also rank in the preseason top-20. Reigning NCAA champ Minnesota-Duluth claimed the top spot.

The source of Ohio State's optimistic outlook lies in its large, talented veteran core. The returning roster features most of last season's key contributors. Three Buckeyes were named Big Ten Preseason Players to Watch. Senior Mason Jobst enters the season as the NCAA’s active career points leader (128). This is his third straight Watch List selection.

It is (bafflingly) the first such nod for junior All-American Tanner Laczynski as well as senior Dakota Joshua. Laczynski is coming off a career 47 point year. The then-sophomore averaged 1.15 points per game in 2017-18 and finished just outside the top-10 on the national scoring chart. He is arguably the player to watch in the Big Ten this season.

This year should be great, preseason top 5 after a Frozen Four season. Rohlik has the program firing on all cylinders.

BTW, I don't really give two shits what you think about Bucky or the University of Wisconsin, but everyone should be rooting for Wiscy to have a good year and make the ncaa's because that's probably the one school the Rohlik leaves for if their current coach gets whacked.

Men’s Hockey: No. 1 Ohio State is out to prove expectations

IMG_6047-ub8jg8-530x353.jpg

Last season, the Ohio State men’s hockey team made a surprise NCAA tournament run that ended abruptly in a 1-2 loss to the eventual national champions, Minnesota-Duluth.

After a season in which the Buckeyes reached the Frozen Four for the first time in 20 years, it would be hard to blame them for looking back and reminiscing about what could have been.

But, for head coach Steve Rohlik, there isn’t time for that.

“Last year is over,” Rohlik said. “This is a new team, a new group. Everyone’s different and you’ve got to earn something every day. Everybody’s 0-0 right now and you’ve got to prove yourself every day, you’ve got to earn everything you get.”

Ohio State enters the season with expectations that haven’t been present in years past, earning its first No. 1 ranking in team history in both the USCHO and USA Today Men’s Hockey polls and receiving 18 first-place votes in both polls.

The roster has 21 returning players and brings back 75 percent of its scoring, so there’s no reason to assume the Buckeyes can’t return to the big stage in the spring.

Senior forward Mason Jobst, junior forward Tanner Laczynski, senior forward Dakota Joshua and other veterans will lead the Buckeyes’ offense. Jobst comes into the season as the NCAA’s active leading scorer with 128 points and Laczynski led the team in scoring last year with a career-high 47 points.

One key loss during the offseason was forward Matthew Weis, a former Ohio State hockey player who accounted for 37 points — third on the team last year. Junior forward transfer Carson Meyer from Miami (Ohio) will help to make up that production, but Rohlik believes the job doesn’t fall on just one player.

“I think we’re not counting on one guy,” Rohlik said. “Our new guys coming in, our veterans coming back, I think there’s a lot of competition up front and I’m looking at a group of guys that can contribute a lot.”
.
.
continued
.
.
Though the veteran leaders on the team understand they must prove themselves on the ice first, they know where their talent can take them in the 2018-19 campaign.

“I think that we know how good we can be, and we saw our potential,” redshirt senior goaltender Sean Romeo said. “So, I think nothing less than a championship is acceptable this year.”

The Buckeyes start their season off with a series at Arizona State on Oct. 12 and 13.

Men's team ranked #1 for the first time ever:

View attachment 18951

Eleven Warriors gets it wrong. We were ranked #1 for a few weeks in either 83 or 84 with the Pooley Brothers. Ended up not winning the CCHA or getting to the NCAA tournament, and the program took a very long dirt nap afterwards. after the Pooleys left. Still, it's amazing what Rohlik has done, and we need to do everything we can to keep this guy.

Wikipedia confirms it was 3 weeks in November 1983:

They are still getting it wrong:

HOCKEY SCHOOL? For the first time in program history, Ohio State has the top-ranked hockey program in the land. The latest coaches poll has the Buckeyes at No. 1, with Ohio State receiving 18 out of 37 first-place votes.
