Ohio State Men's Golf (Official Thread)

Shipley lost so it is 2-2,

It all comes down to one match.

Wallin wins the 18th, his match is now tied, and they will play extra holes; winner plays Florida State tomorrow for all the marbles.

Let’s go, Adam!!

We call that 'the rub of the green'. Agreed, if the TV truck/stand/stake wasn't there, would have been game over, in favor of the Buckeyes. All five matches were well played, alot of talent on both side of that match. Typical golf, back and forth. Say Moldovan was up 2, turned my back and boom, he was down one. Yeah, Koivun got a fortuitous drop, but his 'Texas wedge' was a marvelous shot. 20-20 hindsight, but maybe Wallin takes a bit bigger club (or even better, don't put in a bunker). Great season guys, this was a team for the record books. Overcame plenty, and outlasted the Illini and made the match play. Thanks you guys, got to watch my beloved Buckeyes on the Golf Channel.

To finish, really thought we had it. Unfortunately, Auburn's freshman beat tOSU's freshman. Auburn's player was SEC freshman of the year, and first team all-SEC - OK pretty stout. Wallin lay in the weeds for most of the year, but came alive and was leading stroke play after the second round. Some double-bogey trouble pushed him down the standings, but he was playing some d*** good golf. Auburn guy had a hitch/twitch when he tried to add something, and caused some troubles for him, but Wallin kept a smooth swing throughout. Played within himself. Don't know that I'd do anything different on his pitch to 18 other than hit the same lob shot to the pin. Thought he'd get more backspin on the shot, but it released instead of biting. Once again, such is golf. All these young men are extremely talented (GT and FSU as well), and look forward to seeing them on Tour. Oh well, some unexpected points for the Director's Cup.

Auburn was saved by the TV truck. If Koivun's shot isn't stop by the truck it's still rolling and Wallin wins it. Instead he gets a drop in a very favorable position.
Absofuckinglutely! I was raising hell. :smash:

39 pressure packed holes today is tough enough without having to battle the top 2 ranked teams in the country and breaks like that shit. Proud of the boys today for fighting

Get the vituperation, but the drop was within the rules of golf. Two club lengths, no near the hole for manmade obstacle. Or somesuch, someone with a better understanding of the rules may correct, but that's the way it's played at my course. Once again, it's the rub of the green, the unseen break near the hole, check spin rather than released, all that stuff. So close......

When you mention ‘two strokes’, do you mean 2 club lengths?

Yeah BB, you're right and I was wrong. No two stroke penalty, as post inferred (would that it would have been so), but two club lengths as you corrected. Thanks. We all saw him taking out his driver (probably 45 "), to measure his drop area. Alot of trampled turf there, so probably influenced his decision to putt rather than pitch. He made an absolutely spectacular stroke, ending within 3 feet of the hole, so good for him. PS, have corrected. Guess the brain and fingers weren't connected....Go Bucks! Nothing said to take away from the Buckeyes spectacular finish. AND got my wish to watch my Buckeyes on Golf Channel. Only thing better would have been to watch the next day against FSU.

Certainly. Yeah I've been wingeing about it but I understand it. Such are the agonies of sport where one inch or one foot is the difference between misery or eternity. The only thing that truly makes my heart full at my age with no children or grandchildren to dote on.

Hear you loud and clear Bestbuck. Sports is a game of inches. Read somewhere that Michael Jordan was only 1/2 step faster/quicker than the other players. Doesn't seem like much certainly, but it made all the difference in the world.

Have been watching the US Open, and Shipley and Moldovan are included. Shipley is playing as an amateur, as he has to, I guess, given that he qualified because of his US Amateur play. Moldovan, apparently, has turned pro. Did see that Shipley made the finals at +3 over par. Have not seen Moldovan anywhere, (and have watched the list several times), and even googled standings. Sooo, does anyone know for certain sure that he's not playing Sat/Sun? One of the announcers noted that Shipley was planning on turning pro for the Canadian Open? Thanks in advance.
