Ohio State Men's Golf (Official Thread)

ARMOUR EARNS TOUR CARD. Former Ohio State men's golfer Ryan Armour has played a lot of rounds over 46 years. He's spent the last 23 as a professional, making 475 starts on the PGA and Korn Ferry Tours and winning two tournaments along the way.

With his age, experience and career prize money – which currently sits at more than $7.5 million – Armour could have settled for Past Champion status on the PGA Tour, which would have given him the opportunity to still compete in some Tour events. However, the Akron, Ohio native kept fighting to retain his status as a full PGA Tour member.

Armour carded a 65 in the final round of the Korn Ferry Tour Championship on Sunday to finish tied for 21st place at 5-under par. That clutch performance secured his full status on the PGA Tour for another year.

When asked why he continues putting forth an effort to play at the highest level of professional golf, Armour said the competitor in him won't let him take the easy way out.

"I love to compete," Armour told Kevin Prise of PGATOUR.com. "That's what drives me. It doesn't drive me for money. I love to come out and compete against myself and compete against other players and compete against the course. That's what gets me up in the morning. Go for a run, or do whatever I have to do to be young enough to stay out here. I'm not getting any younger, but I am trying to go out and beat the clock."

What a great adventure for these young men. Do yourselves and tOSU proud in the Arizona sun! Hit 'em long, straight, and not too often. Go Bucks! PS, should be a good crowd given the alumni base in the Phoenix area.

Anyone know how tOSU mens golf team is doing in the playoff? Against Texas Tech (the goatropers) for the final place in NCAAs? It's early yet, so if anyone has the channel, etc let me know please. Go Bucks - hit 'em long, straight, and not too often. One kid is #2 at 5 under! Wow. Next five have room to improve....

I just tuned in. College Central is the pregame so to speak. Very cool seeing Buckeyes on here

Edit: Looks like no chance to win it. 10 strokes back in the individual and a not further for the team. Doesn't look like well make the chit at current 15th place

Thanks Script. Didn't think to look at TT website....sounded like an interesting way to handle a playoff. Pretty cool to divvy up the playoff between several players. Certainly an uphill climb, and looking at the final scoring by tOSU team, looks like we could use some help at the lower rankings. Maybe bring back Jim Brown as an advisor? Have saved the Natalie Gulbis/ Jimmy Hanline show featuring the Scarlet. Haven't played the S&G courses in 25 years. Always a pleasure to watch. Having a Tito's at the VC was a hoot. Whetstone '67 always has a Friday night there when have a reunion. Memories.

Moldovan’s place in the field was well-deserved, as he couldn’t have come closer to earning a berth during final qualifying last week. After tying for fourth place in 36 holes of play at Springfield (Ohio) Country Club last Monday, Moldovan advanced to a three-way playoff for the final two qualifying spots out of Springfield and played eight playoff holes before he was beaten out for the final berth by former Iowa golfer Alex Schaake.

That left Moldovan as the third alternate for this week’s tournament, ultimately resulting in him receiving the final spot in the 156-man field when it was filled out on Sunday night.

Moldovan, who missed the cut in his first U.S. Open last year, is coming off an excellent junior year for the Buckeyes. He finished in the top 10 in 10 of 13 events played, including one win and seven top-fives, and broke his own single-season scoring record with an average of 70.64 strokes per round.

He will be one of two Ohio State products in the field for this week’s major, joining former Ohio State golfer Ryan Armour, who earned the final qualifying spot in Toronto last Monday to make his first-ever U.S. Open.

Everyone talks about football players passing the 'look' test. Golfers on the other hand, come in all sizes and shapes, but all have beautiful swings. (don't really mean that, but however one gets the ball into the hole....) and golfers can shoot a 64 one day, and an 84 the next. I'll just watch these guys and remain envious.....Used to go watch John Cook whenever he came west. Go Bucks!

OHIO STATE GOLFER NEAL SHIPLEY SET TO LIVE OUT DREAM OF PLAYING IN THE MASTERS

146583_h.jpg

As Neal Shipley rode back to the clubhouse following his semifinal win at last summer’s U.S. Amateur, he realized the opportunity he had just earned with that accomplishment.

The top two finishes of each year’s U.S. Amateur are invited to The Masters, giving the Ohio State senior the coveted chance to play in golf’s most storied tournament.

“The USGA guys pull me out to go do some media up the hill at the clubhouse, and it kind of hit me going up the hill and I turn around to my caddy (his childhood friend Carter Pitcairn, who plays at Wisconsin), we’re in the cart, he's in the back and I’m like, ‘Hey Carter, we just got a tee time at effing Augusta National,’” Shipley said. “So that was very eloquent of me in that moment, but that was kind of when it hit.”

Shipley has been watching The Masters since he was a young child, but now, he gets to live out the dream of playing in it as one of five amateurs in this year’s field.

“I think everyone who grows up playing golf competitively or at any level kind of dreams about playing at Augusta or competing in the Masters,” Shipley said. “So certainly living out one of my childhood dreams. I've heard so much about the week and how special it is, and I'm just really excited to experience it and experience the Masters and everything that it represents for our game.”

Qualifying for The Masters allowed Shipley to play numerous practice rounds at Augusta National over the past several months before this week’s tournament, and each trip to the highly exclusive golf club made him recognize the gravity of the opportunity even more.

“It really hasn't felt real until these last couple of visits and starting to see the grandstands get put up, the scoreboards,” Shipley said during an interview at the Ohio State Golf Club in March. “My first trip, none of that was up. So you start to kind of realize like ‘Man, this is really happening.’”

His tee times:
  • Thursday @11:30 a.m. — Mike Weir, Ryo Hisatsune, Neal Shipley
  • Friday @ 8:24 a.m. — Mike Weir, Ryo Hisatsune, Neal Shipley

Ryan Armour reminds me of another Buckeye, Joey Sindelar, who was a noted 'grinder' on the pro tour. He just keeps plugging, and working at it. Very cool, and more power to him, especially when he could get a cush CC position, with a guaranteed salary, instead of risking getting shut out of the money, with all the expenses to get there left to be paid. Go Bucks! PS what's Moldovan doing now?
