Game Thread Ohio State @ Indiana, 08/31/17 @ 8:00 ET (ESPN)

I'm seriously concerned that Beck just permanently broke him with whatever he taught him. Also, that maybe he just can't play well when he has to think beyond the 1st, maybe 2nd read. He seems to maybe be a better instinctual player than thinking player. He knows the plays, the routes, but seems to stiffen up when he's thinking. He obviously knows the system. Tell him to quit thinking and just play. Stop analyzing the play and just run it.
Jesus Christ. Keep fucking that scapegoat.

... the offense... needs to stop being other people running Urbans offense.... Urban needs to let his OCs do their thing and run their O not Urbans.... Urban and Herman meshed in styles and philosophies.... Urban and Ed/Beck nope... Urban and Wilson/Day looking like nope...

Really tough to watch......the all 22 camera isn't going to be very kind to JT either.

I think one thing that has really hampered JT a bit, is the change in offensive philosophy from when he was a freshman to now as a senior. As a freshman he was largely a 1 read, at most 2 read QB, who would tuck the ball and run if his first reads weren't there.

Like most upper-class men, they've tried to develop him as a locket QB and a guy who can go through progressions. The problem, is by the time he gets to his 3rd or 4th option, he just doesn't have the arm strength to do damage.

If you're going to roll with JT, I'd almost scrap the whole "development" angle and turn him back into Tim Tebow. Literally 1 or two reads, and then you're a fullback plowing downfield. He just doesn't have the arm strength to play from the pocket IMO.

And I don't want to go down a rabbit hole too far, but his deep passing was largely a function of the 1 read philosophy. When put in that situation, they develop the plays for QB's to intentionally look safeties off, come back to main target, read safety on that side, and either pull the trigger or tuck and run. When he's sitting back there reading coverages, he just doesn't have the ability to make defenses pay....

All that said...lets go win this second half.

Nice analysis, I agree with this. Lot of times in the game where JT could of ran and gotten 3-4 yards instead of throwing the ball away. They may be trying to preserve him as much as possible for the rest of the season, but it takes away a big strength of his game.

I'm really not seeing who he is supposed to throw to

Campbell has a long catch and run near the end of the half if JT throws him open on target.

Remember Troy in 2005 vs Troy in 2006? 2006 Troy made some sick throws against Texas, Iowa, and Michigan that he'd never really flashed the ability to do in 04 or 05.

My hope was JT would make that leap in his final year. It appears he has not.

Thursday night opener against a B1G is stupid as [Mark May]. Is this for extra cash? Really, what's the justification here?

I've had some serious questions about our scheduling over the last couple years. That road series last year was just dumb. This is dumb. Everything is dumb.

Not even remotely worried about this game, or even the season. I just don't know why we play this game.

Give me someone like Akron, or someone awesome like FSU, Bama, Clemson, etc. But not an IU team who always manages to play us tough -- and in Indiana -- and with their former coach on our sideline.

Then Army on Week 3, yet Gene Smith still has a job. My two observations: 1) the offense is still run by Beck apparently...nothing has changed and it's really disappointing...zero tempo, JT is hesitant, no deep ball, predictable...that HAS to change; and 2) defense will be fine I think, DB's are in good shape but they are executing...that being said, I would put Okudah or Wade out on #1, their length could help on that high back shoulder throw.

I agree. I'm not worried about this particular game, especially when you consider Urb's legendary halftime adjustments, but I am concerned about JT long-term. Even if the secondary improves and our run game becomes among the best in the country, we're going to struggle against the Oklahomas, Penn States, Michigans, and Alabamas of the world. You simply need a successful passing game to win in 2017.

Yep. I really like JT, but if he's hit a wall he's hit a wall. It's pretty late in his career to still be getting out the kinks. This game isn't solely on him, but he's made a number of poor throws and no great ones.

I think it's wishful thinking to hope for a 5th year seniot to significantly improve at this point in his career.
