2015 or 2016?

They need to come with some more variety in the run game the 2nd half. Virtually every run has been right up the gut. Indiana sitting on it. Lucky dobbins was able to break a few out.

Right?! I'm not asking for every other ball to be to Campbell/McCall on a jet sweep, but FFS, run a couple to keep the D honest.

I'm disappointed, yes.

But this is the opening game, on the road, against a B1G opponent whose offense is talented and experienced where our defense is very very green.

Being down 1 at the half with a very bland offensive scheme so far is not at all a raw deal. The difference between these two teams should show itself over the next 30.

I agree. I'm not worried about this particular game, especially when you consider Urb's legendary halftime adjustments, but I am concerned about JT long-term. Even if the secondary improves and our run game becomes among the best in the country, we're going to struggle against the Oklahomas, Penn States, Michigans, and Alabamas of the world. You simply need a successful passing game to win in 2017.

I'm of the belief that the delivery motion is slow enough to give secondaries extra time to react; I'm convinced it won't allow us to establish any downfield attack with any consistency at any point this season unless we are playing ridiculously inferior athletes.

It also doesn't help that the offensive line showed up for maybe two drives. It doesn't help that wideouts aren't getting enough separation.

I recognize that early kinks are to be expected but there are too many variables failing for this not to be alarming.

Maybe JT is still shaking off the Tim Beck cowebs? Right guys? Right?!

I'm seriously concerned that Beck just permanently broke him with whatever he taught him. Also, that maybe he just can't play well when he has to think beyond the 1st, maybe 2nd read. He seems to maybe be a better instinctual player than thinking player. He knows the plays, the routes, but seems to stiffen up when he's thinking. He obviously knows the system. Tell him to quit thinking and just play. Stop analyzing the play and just run it.

It is a long season. It's also been a long, long off-season when they were supposedly developing their skills and correcting weaknesses.

Plus, I've seen this before, too many times, frankly. Very deja vu. One of these days, I'd like to see a team that comes out of the gate kicking ass, running up the score mercilessly, and generally dominating the living hell out of everyone they play. I've heard rumors there are teams that manage to do that.

I keep reading we have these awesome recruiting classes. Either those ratings are bunk, or our coaches aren't getting the most out of that talent.

Frustrating.

Really tough to watch......the all 22 camera isn't going to be very kind to JT either.

I think one thing that has really hampered JT a bit, is the change in offensive philosophy from when he was a freshman to now as a senior. As a freshman he was largely a 1 read, at most 2 read QB, who would tuck the ball and run if his first reads weren't there.

Like most upper-classmen, they've tried to develop him as a pocket QB and a guy who can go through progressions. The problem is, by the time he gets to his 3rd or 4th option, he just doesn't have the arm strength to do damage.

If you're going to roll with JT, I'd almost scrap the whole "development" angle and turn him back into Tim Tebow. Literally 1 or two reads, and then you're a fullback plowing downfield. He just doesn't have the arm strength to play from the pocket IMO.

And I don't want to go down a rabbit hole too far, but his deep passing was largely a function of the 1 read philosophy. When put in that situation, they develop the plays for QB's to intentionally look safeties off, come back to main target, read safety on that side, and either pull the trigger or tuck and run. When he's sitting back there reading coverages, he just doesn't have the ability to make defenses pay....

All that said...lets go win this second half.

IU has recognized the one or two positions on offense where they have an advantage and are exploiting the fuck out of it. Does OSU not have the ability to do the same thing? Or do they just not have any significant advantages to exploit? Either way....

The talent is there on both sides of the ball. Offense starts at QB. Become a one-dimensional threat and your talent is not being used wisely. That 14 to 21 point spread looks pretty goid to me right now.

I think the defense will get this right in the second half. I think the offense will do enough to win it. I think Ohio State will be 7-10 point underdogs in their next game...

and win.
