Ohio State Campus News

Just a great photo:

I'm sure nobody really cares, but, I actually have a brick from the original University Hall. Back in August 1971 the original University Hall was demolished. I hopped the construction fence to grab a brick.

I care. The replacement is something right out of Disneyland faux architecture. I loved the old limestone steps at the entrance, groves worn in them from the constant passing of students. There was a sense of history to the place that is completely missing from the campus.

Remembering May 4th and 5th 1970.

Fifty years ago today. I'd been back from Vietnam for 9 months, trying to complete my undergrad degree. Student riots broke out following Nixon's announcement that US and South Vietnamese troops had entered Cambodia.

I went to the oval in the morning, armed with my cameras. I quickly realized that the Guard troops were carrying rifles with live ammunition. What happened that afternoon at Kent State could have happened in Columbus or any number of other schools.

That night I watched the news from Kent State. My fears of what might happen on the Oval happened at Kent. Walter Cronkite finished his report and CBS ran a list of colleges that had shut down; a list that ran from Amherst to Youngstown State. Ohio State was shut down for two weeks and wouldn't fully reopen until the next fall.

My mom and dad were students at the time and were "shocked" what happened at Kent. St. didn't happen at OSU.

That's my understanding. People at the time never expected it to happen at KSU. All the big protests were at Ohio State before May 4th. Given Rhodes antipathy to both Ohio State and the anti-war movement, it's a miracle it didn't happen at OSU.

PRESIDENTIAL SEARCH STATUS. I'll save you some time and sum up what we know about the status of Ohio State's presidential search with one emoticon: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

But since I know y'all are avid words readers, here's the longer version:

But it’s unclear how that timeline has been impacted by the pandemic, if at all. If it hasn’t, OSU is set to have a new leader in less than two months at a pivotal time for all higher education institutions as they grapple with how to adapt the college environment to a world focused on social distancing.

Von Thaer, through a spokesman, declined to answer specific questions about which search milestones have occurred and what step the university was currently at.

He also did not respond to questions about whether the private search firm was still sorting through candidates, whether any finalists have been identified for the position – or whether he expects there to be a new president by the time classes start this fall.

Nor is it clear whether Drake has been asked to stay on as the full-time university president for any additional time. Drake is already set to remain at OSU after he steps down and serve as president emeritus for one year.

OSU spokesman Ben Johnson, in response to those questions, said there was “no additional info at this time” to share.

I'm thoroughly amazed at how quiet they've been able to keep this entire process, but I guess that's what happens when a global pandemic distracts and removes everybody from on campus.

I wonder if this guy will be considered for the job:

Regardless, I like his position on the scUM game:

OHIO STATE TO BUILD NEW MUSIC BUILDING AFTER $17 MILLION GIFT FROM ALUMNUS RATMIR TIMASHEV'S CHARITY FOUNDATION

114369_h.jpg

Ohio State is getting a new music building.

After a $17 million gift from the charity foundation belonging to alumnus Ratmir Timashev and his family, Ohio State is able to build a much-needed new music building.

The building – which will be named the Timashev Family Music Building in recognition of the family's generosity – will presumably replace the current Hughes Hall, which was built in 1946 and is notoriously one of the most dated, renovation-ready buildings on campus.

The Timashev Family Music Building will be among the most acoustically and technologically advanced facilities in the nation and will be equipped with modern performance and practice spaces as well as venues with the capacity to host world-class performers, visiting faculty and free community-wide performances, according to Ohio State.

“I will always be grateful for the opportunity Ohio State gave me to come over as a graduate student, which defined my career and life,” Timashev said in a release. “It is my privilege and honor to support Ohio State and its students, who all were given that same great opportunity to become a Buckeye.”

Timashev's contribution – the largest in the college's history – will also support the renovation of Celeste Laboratory of Chemistry and create endowed scholarships for Arts and Sciences students.

STATE UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK CHANCELLOR KRISTINA JOHNSON SET TO BECOME OHIO STATE'S NEXT UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT, PER REPORTS

114400_h.jpg

Ohio State reportedly has its new university president.

State University of New York chancellor Kristina Johnson has accepted the job and will be Michael Drake's successor, according to reports by Carl Campanile of the New York Post and Rachel Silberstein of the Times Union.

An unsigned letter of resignation to the State University of New York indicates she has agreed to become Ohio State's new president, beginning Sept. 1, per Silberstein's report.

Johnson has been SUNY's chancellor since September 2017. Previously, Johnson was the CEO of Cube Hydro Partners, a clean-infrastructure company that builds and operates hydropower plants in North America. Before that, Johnson served as the Secretary of Energy for the U.S. Department of Energy.

A Ph.D. in electrical engineering who graduated from Stanford University, Johnson's previous work in academia includes serving as the dean of Duke University's engineering school from 1999-2007 and the provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at Johns Hopkins University from 2007-09.

Ohio State has not yet announced Johnson's hiring, but the university's Board of Trustees is set for a scheduled meeting on Wednesday.

Drake announced in November that he would retire as Ohio State's president this year. He is remaining on Ohio State's faculty and will serve as president emeritus for the 2020-21 academic year.
