COVID-19: Ohio State preparing for transition back to on-campus operations

University leaders caution a date has not been determined and will be based on COVID-19 data

The Ohio State University today announced the establishment of a post-pandemic operations task force to direct the return to appropriate on-campus operations once the coronavirus outbreak (COVID-19) has been deemed contained.

“The fight against COVID-19 remains a real and immediate threat to all of us. Ohio State is actively engaged in this fight and in moving forward into a safer future,” said President Michael V. Drake. “We established this task force to engage in rigorous planning and to accelerate our return once it is safe to do so.”

Drake has charged the post-pandemic task force as a plan-ahead team to address an eventual return to appropriate campus operations and business continuity, though a time table is still uncertain.

“While our collective efforts to reduce the spread of COVID-19 have shown encouraging results, we are still in the midst of the pandemic,” said task force chair Gail Marsh, senior vice president and chief strategy officer. “We’ll work closely with our own safe campus advisers and with the governor and his team to make return decisions.”

A safe campus and scientific advisory subgroup will use a data-driven approach for determining when it is safe to begin transitioning back onto campus. The subgroup is led by chair Amy Fairchild, dean of the College of Public Health, and vice chair Bernadette Melnyk, dean of the College of Nursing and the university’s chief wellness officer, with members from the Wexner Medical Center’s Division of Infectious Diseases and other colleges, departments and offices at Ohio State.

Faculty, staff and students are represented in the planning efforts.

“All university units have begun transition planning while still responding to the crisis at hand,” Drake said. “The task force will align planning across the wide spectrum of functions and operations necessary to the university’s return to on-campus operations.”

Ord,

Any chance this pandemic could get some of our MAC schools to close and consolidate in NE and NW Ohio?

More than a couple were already heading for some kind of come to jesus moment. It wouldn't surprise me if this is what pushes them over the edge and allows the state the political cover to do what's clearly been necessary for decades.

Urbana is closing it's doors for good. Hopefully the students and employees will be able to land someplace.

Urbana University will permanently close, ceasing enrollments

Urbana University is a branch campus of Franklin University, based in Columbus.

As a result of this decision, academic programming will be moved to Franklin University, while athletic offerings and on-site administrative roles will cease at the Urbana branch campus,” the university said.

As a result of the closure, 111 full-time employees will be impacted and some will be offered employment at Franklin University.

“Those who will not continue at Franklin will be offered severance packages that include outplacement assistance to help with this difficult transition,” the university announced.

Urbana University currently has 1,254 students.

“Our highest priority is to ensure students experience a seamless transition of their academic studies and that our branch campus employees have the resources to make their transition as well,” said Dr. David Decker, President, Franklin University. “As institutions of higher education across the country struggle to identify ways to stay open, we will do all we can to help students identify the best alternative forward to fulfill their education goals in an affordable manner.”

Ohio State's response to budgetary pressures is starting to come into focus.

Ohio State University’s housing, dining and recreational fee refunds totaled more than $35 million, and the university expects continued volatility related to investment returns, Michael Papadakis, senior vice president of business and finance and chief financial officer at OSU, said in a written statement.

For the next fiscal year, Ohio State has asked all colleges and units to prepare three budget scenarios: assuming 5%, 10% and 20% reductions in spending.

“We must prepare for fiscal 2021 based on the possibility of ongoing disruptions while continuing to focus on the university’s core academic mission and placing Ohio State in the best possible position for a future in which the virus is contained,” Papadakis said.

Ohio State has already enacted a hiring freeze, which is expected to save $4 million to $6 million through June 30, and paused certain salary increases, which could save the university $5 million to $10 million. OSU also has paused a number of capital projects.

"Here he was, a freshman, in the first game of the year, he was able to get on the field. He got into the huddle and, more improbably, the first play that was called was to give the ball to him." Drake said. "The ball was handed and, immediately, he fumbled and was yanked from the game and sat on the bench. In a moment, he went from the most exciting moment in his life to the most embarrassing."

As a running back in the Woody Hayes era, Griffin broke the golden rule: don't fumble the ball. He did not think he was going to play the rest of the year as he was behind a number of upperclassmen but began preparing for the possibility of playing next year.

"The next game, early in the game, ... he shockingly heard his name called... He ran into the huddle and, again, shockingly, the play was called to hand him the ball." Drake continued. "When he finally left the field in that game, in the fourth quarter, he had set the university running record, all time, for a game."

Griffin ended the contest against North Carolina with 27 carries for 239 rushing yards. His record stood for a year until he broke it again with 246 yards against Iowa, the same program he fumbled against in the first game of his career.

"His message was, again, that we all make mistakes and we all can do things that don't work out, but what determines the course of our lives is what we do next."
