Game Thread Ohio State at Penn State, 10/22/16, 8:00pm ET ABC/WatchESPN

Fluke or not, we dominated everything but the scoreboard, made head-scratching coaching decisions, and didn't properly put them away.

The killer instinct we saw the first three weeks has vanished. The team we saw in Norman doesn't even exist any more.

It's does, Oklahoma just doesn't have a shred of defense. Gave up 854 yards and 59 points to Texas Tech.

In a way that game validated the coaches' offensive game plan when it was just a terrible defense.

The bottom line is this team got humbled in a major way last night. Other teams are going to smell blood and attack them in the same way PSU and Wisconsin did.

They can either pick themselves up, adjust, and move on, or let it totally derail them.

But now that the polls are out, they can see that they still control their own destiny, which, if you told anyone that this would be the case 7 games in, back in August, they'd have taken it.

I know this was brought up last night by @billmac91 about the schedule but Bama who is our benchmark has done this and they face it more than anyone

We supposedly have one of the best staffs in the country maybe we need 30 analyst getting 20k a year to help out like Bama.

I don't have any issue with playing teams coming off a bye. I have an issue stacking us against teams coming off byes in consecutive weeks. Of the 27 times Bama has played a team coming off a bye, I'd be curious to see how often they had to go on the road against teams
coming off a bye, in night games.

agreed. curious as to what the time frame is as well.

I know damn well that the LSU and AU games weren't back to back...ever.

Good post tsteele.

I have no doubt that players will respond.

My concern is that messrs Beck/Smith and Warriner are not equipped to fix what ails us.
No, they're not. They're not the brainchild of the offense nor do they have the weapons to do it.

I would like to see a more competent approach on intermediate routes and outflanking the opposition. They do this constantly with their rushing attack yet the passing attack is almost inversely proportional to that.
Namely teams playing downhill with no fear of retribution thru the air.
Which player would you like to throw deep to, diddy?

They need a Lane Kiffin. He would get the ball to Samuel, Baugh, Campbell and others.

That said, even Nick Saban had a bumpy transition to a great offensive mind like Lane, and that included gift wrapping a NC berth for OSU by taking the ball away from the tailbacks.

I respectfully dissent. I posit the QB:WR:OC are chiefly responsible for implementation of the passing game.

I concur.

We out to be able to scheme considering there are 15 4 stars on the roster.
I don't see how are 2 4/5 wrs from the last class don't see the feild. Alas I don't think you can throw them in now.
But given our losses to the NFL, Gibby's suspension and Smiths injury - I'm shocked they haven't played.

These same flaws have been evident throughout Urban's tenure.

2012 braxton? Yep, and that was with NFL WRs and a big arm.
2013 braxton? Yep, same.
2014 barrett? Yep, save for one game, and that was with trading Brown for Thomas (who is killing it in the league) and adding Marshall.
2015 CJ/JT? Yep, save for a bowl game against an iffy ND team.
2016 barrett? Yep, although I think JT did fairly well in the pedestrian scheme yesterday.

The exception is 1 MSU game by JT and 3 star-crossed games by Cardale (two of which had very leaky downfield coverage)

Bill Greene talks about this a lot, with this being the transition between the studs that left and those that are coming. Also, outside WR recruiting and DT recruiting were the exceptions to the rule in Urban's great recruiting. That finally changed with the 2016 & 2017 classes, but those guys aren't going to win a title this year.

Terry McLaurin has been making some plays, but he wasn't a top ranked guy.

Dixon is not healthy.

Smith is not reliable (and now hurt).

Campbell is a RB learning the position. He is a prime example of the problem with this offense. Not his downfield play, but their inability to get the ball to him naturally in motion. He's ultra fast with decent size yet returns are the only place he can impact the game.

Samuel is a RB. A big mismatch but a RB nonetheless. That was evident in the drop in Madison.

Wilson has really matured and played through regular injury. He's still an h-back but one they can use somewhat.

Brown is a possession guy and red zone WR with a QB that throws the fade route poorly. He even struggled to loft the pass for the enormously long Victor a few weeks ago.

Mack hit the wall a bit. I hope he plays more.

Victor is a bean pole. He'll be a monster some day, but for now, he needs a year of S&C. He also doesn't provide a great downfield threat with a QB that throws downfield poorly. That's one big part that's lost in all of this.

Braxton was inconsistent but could fire lasers deep, albeit sometime late. Cardale was a flamethrower but inconsistent. JT is mediocre to poor on most downfield throws. Now that he's finally figured out how to throw a few good ones per game, they have some pretty mediocre high pointers receiving them. Clark has not tracked the deep ball well throughout his career. Dontre has improved but isn't great. Samuel is a great weapon but again, not consistent downfield.

They have too much talent to not be competent in the passing game. That said, I think they lack the talent that Herman had in terms of high level WR talent (since Gibson is ineligible and the best talent is either brand new or still in HS).

I'm not waving any white flags, but 2 carries for Curtis and 49 pass attempts for JT certainly has the alarm bells ringing.

Call it a fluke if that makes you feel better. I'm calling it a colossal coaching failure. This was a '98 MSU level collapse.
JT also had 27 carries - most of which were for no gain and came when a pass play had been called, but he was either sacked or decided to try and get something. Sooooo the ball was in JT's hands 76 times compared to maybe 8 or 9 for Samuel.

Oh and while we're at it, can we get rid of the jet sweep and the option runs. They were effective in the past, but either this line can't pull them off, or the opposition has spotted something that tips them off.

If I can tell when we're going to run the jet sweep, you can bet your ass the opposing defense does, too. Now, the first time that Samuel throw a pass off a jet sweep, the defense will hesitate just enough in future jet sweeps to allow the sweeps to be effective again. Right now, the defenses are collapsing on it at the first hint we're going to run it...

I kinda like that JT pretty much said he's going to just start doing whatever it takes to win.

He sounded highly frustrated regarding our "listen to the media!" coaching approach. That's good news as far as I'm concerned. I'm at the point where I'd rather he calls whichever play he feels like calling despite what's coming down from upstairs. If we can predict it from our couches, the coach on the other side of the field can do the same.

For the folks saying the polls don't matter: I guarantee you it matters to a bunch of hungry young kids that their dreams of making it to the National Championship are still alive. It's a wake up call that if they don't give it 100% from here on out, that dream will die. I for one think we have the weapons to not only get there, but succeed. I have been to the mountaintop and witnessed a 3rd string QB come in and take us all the way to undisputed. So anyone telling me all hope is lost for that kind of "Playoff" talk might as well hold their breath.
