Ohio State at Minnesota (official game thread)

This team plays like they do not like one another. No communication, no chemistry. Very disappointing season.
I could not agree more with that statement. Leadership is lacking and it's not because we do not have a PG. I have to blame some of this on the head coach. We have never changed defenses all season. It's always been a 2-3 zone or a offshoot of that. It seems like we do not run any offensive sets. We just come down to floor, pass the ball around a little, and jack up the three or turn the ball over. It has been very disappointing.

We can talk about who we have coming in next year but that is next year. Crater and BJ can't help us this year.

I am tired of people talking about how young this team has been this year. Purdue is younger than us and we have not progressed at all and yet I think some of our players might be better than some of Purdue's.

The above quote by MaxBuck sums it all up and you can add a little coaching to that.

Koufos is likely gone. His draft stock hasn't fallen nearly as much as people say. His game 100% translates better to the NBA.

There are many players, for a variety of reasons, that don't fit college systems well. Koufos, this year is an example of that. Not playing with a true center has hurt his game badly. He;s improved his post game from the beginning of the season which will actually elevate his stock some, even though he won't rely on that in the league.

I think it will be a case of 2 years in a row where we have a big stepping out, with a big coming in, where if they had gotten to play together they would have been dominant.
I think you need to check out a NBA mock draft. I posted something from NBAexpress.net or something like that and KK wasn't even listed in the first two rounds. Have you ever seen a 7' miss a standing dunk. Maybe I have but I can't remember when. He is too soft for the NBA and sometimes he plays well and sometimes he plays not so well.

Sorry I got off topic. This should go in his thread but I had to reply.

He's a guarantee first rounder regardless of that website. Kosta hasn't been able to play his style because of where the Bucks need hm to play. He is out of position. If he declares, which I expect he will, he has plenty of time to impress in camps and workouts.

Again, any NBA that would take him, isn't looking to utilize him under the glass. He's a perimeter big that fits the mold of Mehmet Okur, not Greg Oden. It's unfortunate we don't have a center to open his game up.

Except he isnt nearly the outside shooter that Mehmet Okur is, so he is much less valuable at that position. Right now, he may be a guaranteed first rounder. But he won't jump if he is going to get drafted at 28. He will only go if he will be in the lottery, and he has fallen well out of the lottery at this point. And as Thad will be quick to tell him, imagine how good he will look next season with BJ taking up space inside and allowing KK to showcase his NBA skill set to scouts. I imagine he takes another year in college.

I don't think its a case of the players not liking each other, but I am not at practice/hanging out with the team so I don't know. But lack of chemistry doesn't automatically mean they don't like or respect each other. I could be due to something as simple as their games just don't click. Jamar is a scorer, not a creator, and it seems like the rest of the team (with the exception of Turner) would THRIVE off of a pg who creates shots for them, but struggle with a PG who cannot do that like Jamar. That doesn't mean Jamar is a bad player, or that the team doesn't like each other. Their games just don't mesh well.

I don't think it is a stretch or unfair to say that Mullens will have an immediate impact on this team or an answer in the paint......I have seen him play and I think he would have started on this team...I think the point guard position will be upgraded next year......they will have an immediate impact, we lack at both spots on the court, certainly a case can be made that it will be more of a strength next year......we are all hoping that it is positive. Expectations are different for each fan......some are unrealistic and some are not.....personally I think both will have an immediate impact on the program.

Gotcha. Just figured you might learn the lesson when you had the same expectations for impact from this year's rooks.

However, you are right....to each his own. Imo, impact is proven on the college court...not against HS competition.

pull up his youtube footage from the International games. He was MVP, and displayed a fantastic perimeter game. He hasn't been able to utilize that style in our offense. At the next level he will.

By BOB BAPTIST

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

MINNEAPOLIS ? Ohio State's men's basketball hopes for an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament continued to sag today with a 71-57 loss to Minnesota in Williams Arena. It is the Buckeyes' fourth loss in a row and their longest streak in conference play in coach Thad Matta's four seasons.
Kosta Koufos scored 17 points and Jamar Butler 13 for the Buckeyes (17-12, 8-8), who lost for the sixth time in their past eight games. Three of the losses have come on the road to teams below them in the Big Ten standings.
Ohio State finishes the regular season at home against Purdue on Tuesday and Michigan State on March 9 and will have at least one game in the Big Ten tournament. The loss dropped OSU into a tie with Minnesota for fifth place and left up in the air which team will get the No. 5 seed and the final first-round bye in the conference tournament. The No.6 seed must play in the first round.

Buckeyes battered
Ohio State falls at Minnesota for fourth loss in a row

MINNEAPOLIS ? Minnesota?s Lawrence McKenzie has had a streaky college career, right down to his final regular-season home game.

McKenzie scored all 20 of his points in the second half, and the Gophers picked up their first victory over a team with a winning record, 71-57 over Ohio State on Saturday afternoon.
?When I get hot, I just get hot. That?s how I would put it,? said McKenzie, a little hesitant to accept the streak-shooter label. ?When I get hot, watch out, because I can put it in from anywhere.?

Offense sputters, Buckeyes fall flat
NCAA Tournament hopes sink lower with fourth straight loss
Sunday, March 2, 2008 3:59 AM
By Bob Baptist

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

MINNEAPOLIS -- There might be no getting over the hump now.
Stymied for much of the past month by an offense unable to take advantage of opportunities provided by the defense, the Ohio State men's basketball team turned both barrels on itself yesterday and once and for all might have blown away its chance of being invited to the NCAA Tournament.
"It's not good," coach Thad Matta said after a 71-57 loss to Minnesota, the Buckeyes' fourth in a row overall and their third in a month to a team below them in the conference standings.
Senior Lawrence McKenzie, a hometown product playing his last game in Williams Arena, scored all 20 of his points in the second half. He combined with Lawrence Westbrook, who had 16 points, for five three-point field goals as the Gophers widened a one-point halftime lead to 12 in the first 9:06 of the second half. Ohio State did not get within nine points after that.
