Retrievers give OSU a workout

Columbus- With his 32 points, 8-of-14 3-point shooting and a shot that cut the lead to six with 1:33 to play Saturday, Ray Barbosa knew what he did to Ohio State.
"I think we put a little fear in their hearts," Barbosa said, "a little bit."
By making a men's college basketball school-record 17 of 35 3-pointers, Maryland-Baltimore County at least added a little exasperation before the Buckeyes prevailed, 92-83, in their final game before Big Ten play starts Thursday at Illinois.

I have to commend Barbosa on his play yesterday, he was clearly the best player on the floor. But then again he was the player who kept them in the game. When I see us play D like we didn't yesterday it makes me wonder how we will beat the big boys. IMO there is no reason why a team that lacks an inside threat should be allowed to make 3's almost at will.
I am not happy about this game other than we did win. We also had our second half slump again and that has got to end.
End of rant.
GO BUCKS!

Anyone catch why he transferred from James Madison?
On TV the announcers said that he transferred because James Madison wasn't winning many games and that UMBC gave him a better chance of winning. In addition, one of his teammates from James Madison transferred with him.

I would have liked Ohio State to have played some man to man defense earlier in the game when they had those big leads (17 points). They could have played with the smaller lineup with either KK or Hunter on the floor. In addition to shutting down the outside game of UMBC as the did in the final couple minutes it would have given the team some man to man game experience which might come in handy later in the season.

Diebler is starting to find his Upper Sandusky stroke:biggrin:

I think the Bucks are continuing to improve on the teamwork and offensive side of the ball and I don't know Matta's timetable for working in the aspects of the game but I do know that zone I saw last night won't cut it against the better teams in the nation or teams who can shoot like Humphrey.
We need to learn how to defend the 3.

Agree and that is very difficult to do these days when you play a zone defense plus rebounding is a major liability when you play zone and the other team is shooting the 3-ball.

You're aware, I hope, that our D against the 3 prior to this game was top-10 in the nation.

Sky isn't falling.

The opponent makes 17 of 35 from 3 and commits only 5 turnovers plus 16 offensive rebounds? Recipe for an upset there. I'll take the win, even if it was much closer than I'd prefer.

The perimeter defense was iffy at best, but I'm willing to chalk it up as merely a blip. UMBC is only the second team this year to make more than 35% of their 3-pointers (aTm was the other: 8-18 for 44.44%). The previous high in points allowed this season was 70 (also aTm). Before Saturday, the team was allowing only 58 points per contest. I'll go waaaaaay out on a limb and say that no other team makes 17 three's against us this season. :p
