UMBC falls short in upset bid vs. Ohio State
School record 17 3-pointers not enough to launch Retrievers past Buckeyes
The Associated Press 1:46 PM EST, December 29, 2007 COLUMBUS, Ohio - Jamar Butler scored 22 points and had a career-best 12 assists and Evan Turner added 17 points in Ohio State's 92-83 victory over Maryland-Baltimore County despite a school record 17 3-pointers by the Retrievers.
The Buckeyes (9-3) built a 75-58 lead with 7:15 to play but UMBC's Ray Barbosa got the Retrievers close when he made a pair of 3s with about two minutes left, cutting Ohio State's lead to 79-72.
Turner and UMBC's Darryl Proctor exchanged baskets before OSU's Othello Hunter scored off a feed from Butler. Barbosa then hit another 3-pointer to make it 83-77 with 1:33 to play before Ohio State made six straight free throws.

Kosta Koufos of Ohio State goes up for a shot against Darryl Proctor of Maryland-Baltimore County in the second half.
It didn't measure up to the Hells Bells toll of doom that the sound system boomed during timeouts. No, it wasn't quite how the Ohio State men's basketball team had hoped to ring out the old year.
"I think we put a little fear in their heart," Ray Barbosa said.
Maybe some questions in their minds, too.
But at the end of the day, not another chink in their armor.
Barbosa, a senior guard for Maryland-Baltimore County, made more three-point field goals yesterday than any college player has in Value City Arena. The Retrievers made more than any college team has. But the Buckeyes withstood the barrage with a point splurge of their own to head into the new year -- and the Big Ten season -- with a 92-83 victory.
Ohio State (9-3), which has won five straight games, opens the conference schedule Thursday night at Illinois.

Retrievers give OSU a workout

Columbus- With his 32 points, 8-of-14 3-point shooting and a shot that cut the lead to six with 1:33 to play Saturday, Ray Barbosa knew what he did to Ohio State.
"I think we put a little fear in their hearts," Barbosa said, "a little bit."
By making a men's college basketball school-record 17 of 35 3-pointers, Maryland-Baltimore County at least added a little exasperation before the Buckeyes prevailed, 92-83, in their final game before Big Ten play starts Thursday at Illinois.
