That Barbosa Dude For UMBC Was On Fire

He was really "in the zone" today (12 of 21 and 8 of 14 from the 3 point line). Twenty one shots and he never was fouled. Did anyone actually guard him?

Anyone catch why he transferred from James Madison?

It is great to see Jom Diebler starting to make some shots. :)

Ohio State 92. UMBC 83
UMBC falls short in upset bid vs. Ohio State

School record 17 3-pointers not enough to launch Retrievers past Buckeyes

The Associated Press 1:46 PM EST, December 29, 2007 COLUMBUS, Ohio - Jamar Butler scored 22 points and had a career-best 12 assists and Evan Turner added 17 points in Ohio State's 92-83 victory over Maryland-Baltimore County despite a school record 17 3-pointers by the Retrievers.

The Buckeyes (9-3) built a 75-58 lead with 7:15 to play but UMBC's Ray Barbosa got the Retrievers close when he made a pair of 3s with about two minutes left, cutting Ohio State's lead to 79-72.

Turner and UMBC's Darryl Proctor exchanged baskets before OSU's Othello Hunter scored off a feed from Butler. Barbosa then hit another 3-pointer to make it 83-77 with 1:33 to play before Ohio State made six straight free throws.

Buckeyes had three double-doubles: Koufos and Hunter in points and rebounds; Butler in points and assists. UMBC had only 4 turnovers -- they are spectacularly good at taking care of the rock. If they shoot anything like that in their conference play, America East may have a surprise champion this season. A pretty good team.

Great to see both Diebler and Turner performing at a high level. Both of them seem to have gained a great deal of confidence at the offensive end.

Didn't see all of it but most of it.

-First game I'll give them a pass of sorts on the rebounding. Loads of 3's being heaved up led to many, many, many long rebounds when we were actually in good position for a change. That said, still too many offensive rebounds and second chance points being given up. Definitly the glaring weakness of this team.

-UMBC just started heaving 3's and didn't stop, one guy was out of his skull. No excuses but it wasn't all bad defense just like UF going 4-20something wasn't all great defense. Somedays the other team just starts making them.

-I think you can really start to see the parts coming together on offense. As somone else said earlier I'm actualy suprised when Butler misses a 3 anymore. Dieblers range is unlimited.

-Our length, proficiency with the zone D and ever improving offense are going to make us a match up issue for a lot of people as the year goes on. Our still too soft interior presence is going to get our ass kicked by some people if its not shored up.

All in all, bring on the B10. I'd give us a punchers chance at worst to defend the title.

The difference in the game was our ability to hit free throws......

Kosta Koufos of Ohio State goes up for a shot against Darryl Proctor of Maryland-Baltimore County in the second half.

It didn't measure up to the Hells Bells toll of doom that the sound system boomed during timeouts. No, it wasn't quite how the Ohio State men's basketball team had hoped to ring out the old year.

"I think we put a little fear in their heart," Ray Barbosa said.
Maybe some questions in their minds, too.
But at the end of the day, not another chink in their armor.
Barbosa, a senior guard for Maryland-Baltimore County, made more three-point field goals yesterday than any college player has in Value City Arena. The Retrievers made more than any college team has. But the Buckeyes withstood the barrage with a point splurge of their own to head into the new year -- and the Big Ten season -- with a 92-83 victory.
Ohio State (9-3), which has won five straight games, opens the conference schedule Thursday night at Illinois.

Retrievers give OSU a workout

Sunday, December 30, 2007 Doug Lesmerises
Plain Dealer Reporter
Columbus- With his 32 points, 8-of-14 3-point shooting and a shot that cut the lead to six with 1:33 to play Saturday, Ray Barbosa knew what he did to Ohio State.
"I think we put a little fear in their hearts," Barbosa said, "a little bit."
By making a men's college basketball school-record 17 of 35 3-pointers, Maryland-Baltimore County at least added a little exasperation before the Buckeyes prevailed, 92-83, in their final game before Big Ten play starts Thursday at Illinois.
