Miles of smiles on way to Atlanta

- This is where the promise was kept. This is where potential stopped being a fancy word for underachieving. This is where Greg Oden's grin remained, like the Cheshire Cat's, when all the trouble had vanished.
The big freshman center watched as his roommate at Ohio State and teammate since boyhood, Mike Conley Jr., the Most Outstanding Player of the South Regional, hurled the ball high in the Alamodome as time ran out in the Buckeyes' 92-76 rout of Memphis

The Bucks really looked up for the game yesterday, and the shots really weren't falling in the first half. I hope they can continue to get up without the David vs. Goliath comments - it seems like it took someone to make them angry to get them going. BP should start some "Hansbrough / Hibbert calling out Oden" rumors to ensure success.

FINAL 4 BABY!

SAN ANTONIO ? From the podium Saturday after his Ohio State Buckeyes won the NCAA tournament's South Regional basketball championship, Thad Matta's view was just peachy.
Atlanta peachy. Final Four peachy.
"Three years ago, we talked about a vision for this program," the coach told the OSU part of the 26,260 fans at the Alamodome. "It just became a reality."

OSU NOTES
Intentional foul sparks Buckeyes

SAN ANTONIO ? Forget trash-talker Joey Dorsey.
Memphis' Chris Douglas-Roberts is the one who treated Greg Oden harshly during Ohio State's 92-76 South Regional win in the NCAA tournament ? at least according to the referees.
A key part of OSU's game-changing 20-8 run Saturday at the Alamodome came when Memphis was up 60-57. After a scramble, Oden got the ball near the block, jumped and scored.

ON TO FINAL FOUR
Buckeyes head to Atlanta after defeating Memphis

By MATT MARKEY
BLADE SPORTS WRITER

SAN ANTONIO - Well, scratch another defensive approach as faulty and ineffective at stopping Ohio State's Greg Oden.

After seeing the 7-foot freshman dominate three earlier games in the NCAA tournament, Memphis tried psychological warfare, and that, too, failed.

Ohio State fed off some trash-talking from the Tigers and put Memphis away 92-76 at the Alamodome yesterday to win the South Regional and a trip to the Final Four in Atlanta.

In previous games, opponents tried to swarm Oden, pound him, push him away from the basket, undercut him, and run him over. Memphis gave the war of words a try, and it failed miserably.

Congrats to the players and coaching staff. What a great time to be a Buckeye. :osu:

You played against us the entire game the way you played against UT the second half.

Actually, we didn't. Against you, we shot 24% from three point land the entire game, and against UT, we shot 42% from three point land in the second half. Against you, we shot 51% from the field in the entire game, and against UT we shot 58% from the field in the second half.

cwise, most of your posts here have been pretty classy, but I think this statement is just sour grapes. First of all, the way I saw things, you guys could hang with us when Oden was on the bench, but you really couldn't do much at all when Oden was out there (see the first five minutes of the game, the first few minutes of the second half, and the final ten minutes of the game). I think you guys were pretty lucky, therefore, to only have had to deal with Oden for 24 minutes. Second, just how many shots did you need to go your way? You already held a ridiculous advantage in three point shooting (46% for you, 24% for us). Of course, if you made all your shots and we missed all of ours, you'd win; but you're not really saying much by posting that.

In short, I think you guys played a very good game and a lot of things fell in your favor (Oden's foul situation, the three point shooting, etc.). Yet you still lost by 16. I simply don't share your sentiment that a few shots the other way and you guys win. In his post-game press conference, Calipari said that OSU was clearly the better team, and he was right. You guys played very, very well (and you should be commended for that), but the game, if anything, could have been a lot more of a blowout from my perspective.

Ohio State coach Thad Matta, who came to the school three years ago, has guided the Buckeyes to their first Final Four since the late 1960s, and he says he's going to let it sink in ? eventually.
"I'm exhausted. We haven't got much sleep," he said. "I take great pride in the kids and the work ethic they put in. But we don't want to be a team that checks off 'We made it to the Final Four' and get our rear ends kicked next Saturday.

Fresh restart for Cook, Lighty
JASON LLOYD, Morning Journal Writer

SAN ANTONIO -- Two of Ohio State's four talented freshmen have been missing for quite some time. David Lighty resurfaced in the Alamodome and Daequan Cook is showing signs of life, too.

If the Buckeyes get both playing up to their capabilities by next weekend, they could be difficult to beat in Atlanta.

In easily his best game since November, Lighty had seven points, six rebounds and three assists in yesterday's 92-76 win over Memphis. That performance came two days after his clutch 3-pointer late in the game against Tennessee, when he earlier had a big three-point play at the halftime buzzer.

A cut above the rest

SAN ANTONIO -- To begin the first team meeting in September, Thad Matta handed out a pamphlet that included academic guidelines, a training schedule and various other parts to college life at Ohio State. Near the back, he slid in a picture of the Final Four.

Now they can tear it out. San Antonio was nice, but Atlanta and the Final Four will be even better.

In what has been a remarkable tournament run, No. 1 seed Ohio State won the South Regional and advanced to the Final Four with yesterday's 92-76 win over Memphis. In an NCAA tournament filled with ulcer-making finishes for the Buckeyes, this time Thad Matta was bear hugging his assistants as the final 10 seconds ticked away. Making 20 straight free throws to end the game ensured the celebration could begin a little early.

"I thought we'd have a little better matchup inside," Coach John Calipari said, without mentioning names. "I thought it would be more competitive."

Coach speak for "Why didn't you just STFU."

A few shots the other way and we win.

Every fan should back their team and every game within 20 points leaves an opening to talk about missed shots or bad calls. But the fact is Memphis hit more threes in the first half than they made in the entirety of any other tourney game and did so at double their normal accuracy. They were only able to run their offense when Oden was on the bench and shot threes because they had to. We have made our living pulling away late the last seven games and this one was not going to get any closer.

Apologies if this is buried in a thread somewhere already, but I think Calipari might have been a tad ticked at Dorsey for pulling on Superman's cape:

"Calipari referred to Dorsey's line in the box score as a "gazillion" because it had so many zeroes in it." (from today's NY Times). Ouch. Pretty bush of Calipari IMO, but I understand his irritation.

Wow - that is a big brush back from coach to player.

Here is the article (for as long as it lasts as free, unarchived content)

Dorsey went from a virtual unknown to an infamous Oden antagonist this weekend. Dorsey called Oden overrated and predicted that he would score 15 points and grab 20 rebounds against him.
Instead, Dorsey had no points, no shots and only three rebounds in 19 minutes. Calipari referred to Dorsey’s line in the box score as a “gazillion” because it had so many zeroes in it. Dorsey’s comments clearly motivated the Buckeyes.
“When somebody talks about Greg, they’re talking about all of us,” Conley said. “We took it up on ourselves to come out and play the game, and I think that’s why we were so successful.”

What amazes me the most about Matta is how he seems to know who to play at the right time in different games. Lighty hasn't really played much the entire year and he stepped up big time yesterday. The same with Cook. He played almost the entire second half and he really hasn't played that much during the tournament. In addition, Twig has played quite a bit as of late but hardly played at all yesterday. It just seems that Matta seems to know which players can match up best against the opposition. I know that is part of a coach's job but Thad seems to do a masterful job at it.

Now let's march through Atlanta like Sherman.

Go Buckeyyyyeeeeeesssss!

You guys played very, very well (and you should be commended for that), but the game, if anything, could have been a lot more of a blowout from my perspective.

I'll address the three statements I put in bold.

My previous comments were not sour grapes. Fact is, when the game was close, that is, the first 37 minutes, a couple of baskets that we weren't able to hit would have COMPLETELY altered the way WE played the last three minutes. I'm certainly not saying we'd have won, but the game changes if Kemp's lay up is a goaltend by Oden (not sour grapes here, the announcer also thought it was a GT), or if JHunt hits that wide open three that he normally makes. If we answer back after the intentional foul, things are different. I have my own issues with that, mainly the fact the basket counted when oden had his back to the basket when the foul occured, but I don't blame the officials for the game's outcome the way some of my ilk might.

We shot a good percentage from the outside all season. Not great, but good. Kemp and Hunt have each had games where they don't miss open shots, they both hit 6 against Cincy. Your guys were collapsing the lane and forcing us to shoot outside shots. Recall that one of my earlier posts here pointed out that we're better shooters than many of you think, and that outside shooting could decide the game. Had you guys not played you most complete game of the tourny and likely of the season (huge props) then I likely would have.

Thirdly, the final score does not reflect the actual game. The game was close throughout, and once we started fouling nonstop and jacking up bad threes, only then did the score reach double digits.

Yes, we played a good game. A very good game. Probably our A game. OFFENSIVELY. But we couldn't beat OSU that way we played D. We got beat off the dribble way too often, didn't hedge screens, and couldn't guard Oden. That's NOT representative of our capabilities on D.

And it didn't help us that OSU played their A game (maybe A+ game), too. There's a reason you guys were a one seed. You were better. But we were in a position with 5-7 minutes to go to pull that one out, but the game didn't go our thereafter.
