Ohio State 80 Cleveland State 63 (Final)

Return trip to Cleveland provides much better payoff

CLEVELAND ? Ohio State's national clout isn't the same. The Buckeyes, though, can still be a bully inside state lines.
Freshman Jon Diebler made five 3-pointers in the second half and David Lighty scored 15 points in his homecoming to power Ohio State to an 80-63 win over Cleveland State on Tuesday night.

Diebler, the most prolific scorer in Ohio high school history, finished with 17 points on 6-of-7 shooting and fellow freshman Kosta Koufos added 16 points and five blocks for the Buckeyes (7-3), whose size and quickness intimidated the Vikings.
Diebler came in shooting just 18 percent (9-of-49) on 3-pointers, so Cleveland State decided to let him fire away.
"What's that kid's name?" Vikings coach Gary Waters said, fumbling for a boxscore. "Diebler? I've got to hand it to him. He hit those shots today."

Buckeyes roll to easy win Cleveland State sloppy from start. Lighty, Koufos enjoy fan support

CLEVELAND: You have to think that had it not been for some sloppy play in the first half, when the Cleveland State Vikings couldn't find the hoop on six consecutive possessions, that the outcome of Tuesday's John McLendon Scholarship Classic might have been different against the Ohio State Buckeyes.

OSU-CSU contest a study in contrasts, Bill Livingston says

Thad Matta, the Ohio State coach, said it wears him down, constantly recruiting blue chippers. But that's the way modern college basketball is.
Gary Waters, the Cleveland State coach, said quick, give him some of that kind of erosion.
The first installment of the John McLendon Scholarship Classic at The Q began with the Buckeyes dominating the Vikings. It ended the same way, in an 80-63 OSU victory.

Ohio State Buckeyes defeat Cleveland State Vikings

Wednesday, December 19, 2007Joe Maxse
Plain Dealer Reporter
Cleveland State came in thinking it had a decent shot at beating, or at least competing against, Ohio State in Tuesday night's inaugural John McLendon Classic at The Q. The Vikings had reason to feel good about themselves as they had won three straight, making 65 percent of their field-goal attempts in their most recent outing against Youngstown State.
The Buckeyes shot down that theory in a hurry as they pulled away from the outset in coasting to an 80-63 men's basketball win in front of 12,715 mostly scarlet-clad fans. CSU was mostly shooting itself out of it during two horrible stretches to start the game and the second half.
"There's not much you can say because you saw it," said CSU coach Gary Waters, whose club fell behind, 17-3, after six minutes. "We had to hit some shots against their zone, and at times we executed, at other times not. We didn't operate against their pressure and wound up playing as a counter-puncher."

Ohio State starts fast, finishes fast to top Cleveland State
UPDATE: 1:11 AM, Wednesday, December 19, 2007
BY Mike Popovich
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

CLEVELAND Ohio State could not be overconfident after hitting Cleveland State with a huge run early Tuesday night.

The Buckeyes already have seen one big lead vanish on the road this season. The one they built in the inaugural John McLendon Scholarship Classic didn?t come close to slipping away.

Five players scored in double figures as Ohio State beat the Vikings, 80-63, in front of 12,715 at Quicken Loans Arena. The Buckeyes led by as many as 24 midway through the second half and used an array of 3-pointers down the stretch to bury any chance for a Cleveland State rally.

This trip certainly felt a lot better than the first road game of the year at Butler on Dec. 1, when the Buckeyes lost a 14-point first-half lead and were beaten by 19.

?Fortunately, we got off to a great start in the game and were able to continue it,? Head Coach Thad Matta said.

Couple of things...

Diebler...Can he split his duties between tOSU and the Cavaliers, if he is going to shoot like that LBJ could use someone up there...

With that said, I just hope that Diebler continues to shoot like that...

Turner played a very good game as well, other than his turnovers being troubling, he has been playing very well...

Butler did a much better job of attacking and creating last night...Led to some easy bucket from his teammates...he needs to do more of that against the zone...

Twig and KK need to learn about positioning for defensive rebounds...

Wallace and Lauderdale are our best rebounders...I hope their minutes continue to increase...

Another solid effort from Lighty...His jump shot has really improved from all his work he has put in...

The zone is turning into to something special folks...Our length to be able to alter shots and get in the passing lanes...We are rotating much better, and understanding how teams are trying to beat it...We just need to rebound better out of it...

With all that said I think the main things for this team are rebounding and finding ways to score on offense...

And one other thing, could someone please tell that announcer that tOSU and CSU is not the battle of Ohio...

Ohio State's David Lighty, racing Cleveland State's George Tandy to a loose ball, had 15 points and eight assists.

CLEVELAND -- They thought fall-quarter exams were over. At halftime last night, though, the Ohio State men's basketball players found themselves right back where they had been 17 nights before at Butler, having let up on the pedal after getting a smaller Horizon League team down by 14 points early.
Coach Thad Matta reminded them before sending them out for the second half.
"Let's show we've had some improvement in that area," he said.
One test passed.
