Ohio State 76, Minnesota 60 (Final)

I predict we have Butler dribble off of about 1,000 pick and rolls and pass the ball around the perimeter for about 40 minutes. I'm not feeling good about this game at all....not after the lackluster performance against Illinois with their leading scorer on the bench. :(

Just for a heads up we were up 17 or something like that and let them back in down the stretch...Wasn't really that bad of a performance...

As for the dribble and pass thing and the pick n rolls, I would like to see us work on that a little bit...

For whatever reason I've seen a lot of Minny this year and thought all along they will give us some trouble. They play some defense and we are a turn over prone bunch.

The biggest matchup I see in our favor is KK pulling Tolluckson(sp?) away from the basket. That guy is so athleticly challenged its not even funny. KK should be able to beat him up down the court all night long.

I really like having the first match up with them at home...I wish we would of had our first one with Purdue at home too...

Ohio State men's basketball: Smith reviving Gophers program
Minnesota fans rediscover team in coach's first season

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Coach Tubby Smith is trying to instill a winning culture in his first year in charge of the Gophers.

In Tubby Smith's Big Ten coaching debut three weeks ago, Minnesota reduced a 12-point deficit against visiting Michigan State to one point with four minutes left in the game.
Then, in less than half a minute, guard Lawrence McKenzie turned the ball over and committed a foul, allowing the Spartans to increase their lead to three.
After McKenzie rushed a three-point shot on the Gophers' next possession, Smith's eyeballs almost sprang from their sockets before he could get a timeout called and heatedly impress on his team that that was not the way to finish games.
"He's intense," P.J. Hill said. "He doesn't give them (any) slack. He's on them about everything."

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
OHIO STATE VS. MINNESOTA

8 tonight
? Where: Value City Arena
? TV: Big Ten Network
? Radio: WBNS-AM (1460), WBNS-FM (97.1)
? Records: Ohio State 13-6, 4-2 Big Ten; Minnesota 12-5, 2-3
? Matchup to watch: Sparked by freshman guard Al Nolen, Minnesota has forced at least 18 turnovers in each of its five Big Ten games and leads the conference in steals and turnover margin. Ohio State has had 15 or more turnovers in four of its past six games. More than previous opponents, Tennessee and Illinois tried to keep the ball out of Jamar Butler's hands and make his teammates handle it more. Will the Gophers try to do the same?
? Noteworthy: Ohio State was 2-2 against Minnesota, 1-1 in Value City Arena, in coach Thad Matta's first three seasons. ? The Buckeyes' past two Big Ten opponents, Michigan State and Illinois, each had 12 more field-goal attempts than Ohio State because of 20 and 17 offensive rebounds, respectively. ? Minnesota has not played since Sunday. ? Tubby Smith, in his first season as Gophers coach, is one win from 400 for his career. This is the first game he has coached against Ohio State.
? Next: at Penn State, 7 p.m. Tuesday

Bench valuable to U
Some of Gophers' best players producing in relief

Article Last Updated: 01/26/2008 12:54:58 AM CST

Tubby Smith says his bench players are just as good as his starters, and sometimes better.
If you've watched the University of Minnesota men's basketball team play this season, then you know why. The Gophers' best point guard (Al Nolen), best shooter (Blake Hoffarber), best defender (Damian Johnson) and best inside presence (Jon Williams) aren't in the starting lineup. "When you look at our bench, it's probably as productive as any in the country," said Smith, whose Minnesota team (12-5, 2-3 Big Ten Conference) plays at Ohio State (13-6, 4-2) tonight.

An article about the Buckeyes from the Minn. Star Tribune

Butler's serving it up again at Ohio State

The Buckeye has regained his point guard job and become a key contributor to his very young team.
When Mike Conley Jr. stepped onto the Ohio State campus last season, Jamar Butler knew his tenure as the team's starting point guard had ended. Butler moved to the wing and played a key role in the Buckeyes' Final Four run, but he longed to return to the position he had played since he was youngster in Lima, Ohio.

A write up about todays game;

Preview: The Gophers (12-5, 2-3 in the Big Ten) face a Buckeyes squad that's still trying to get into a rhythm after losing three out of four. Ohio State (13-6, 4-2 Big Ten) has the talent to match up against most teams in the Big Ten, but the team is young, and it has shown recently. Minnesota also is trying to "recover," Tubby Smith said Friday, after two tough home losses against Michigan State and Indiana. Both squads have little margin for error as far the NCAA tournament selection committee is concerned.

Jamal Abu Shamala isn't getting a lot of minutes this year but I won't be surprised to see him have his best game of the season against us, again.

I don't believe we can hold them down too well so we will need to outscore them on the offensive side.

:oh:

From Best's link. This says a lot.

"You know it's been a little different," Butler said. "This year made it a little extra tough with all the freshmen coming in. I had to teach them all the system, and we had players from last year that didn't even know the system all the way throughout the season."
