Ohio State 75, Florida 84 (final - NC Game)

Sit back and enjoy the ride because I'll tell you no matter the outcome it's been 44 years since the Buckeyes have even sniffed the title game.
Given that OSU has been in the Final Four multiple times in the last 44 years, I assume you define "sniffing" the title game only as actually being in it.

Your team is so tough to stop due to it's size. I think Lighty could handle Brewer pretty well, but he'd have to replace lewis, which is a big loss on offense. Against most teams, we can steal minutes at the 4 with less size (Lighty) or athleticism (Harris)... but that's pretty hard to do against your lineup.

I think our other big men will be hard for your team to handle. Simply by numbers. If we have all three Noah, Hortford and Richard in, who will match up against all three? Noah is the smallest of the three as far as thickness goes. That is one thing I expect to see a lot of from Billy D. If those three and Brewer are in the game, height will give you guys a real problem. We would dominate inside and you would have to leave Brewer or Green (most likely) open outside the arc.
Terwilliger has stepped up his game as a 'minute stealer' but this is a whole different ballgame against your front court.

Perhaps Matta is seeing if Koufos can graduate early and use up a year of eligibility for the sake of a title :p
I know thats a lot of "What the Gators are great" but I wouldn't be able to talk intelligently about the Buckeyes, I just haven't watched them enough.
Nope, I think it was well thought out... and admitting your bias and shortcomings lends itself to good debate.

And nothing that bad was said about Florida by Herbie, he merely preferred UM slightly over UF, yet he was villified as the devil by far too many.

Both sides did/are blowing it out of proportion somewhat. For Florida is started that we did not deserve to be there, then it changed to we just did not have a chance (as no one from the SEC would against a powerhouse from the Big Ten). You guys are being told that you do not have a chance. The difference here is the time span. You are hearing it for a day. UF heard it for a month. Hearing something hour after hour makes it worse than hearing it once (hench the blowing it out of proportion). Hearing it hour after hour, day after day makes it so you can not not focus on it. You have to focus on it and turn it to your advantage. Thats what Meyer did. Maybe Matta will too, I hope not.

I still find it comical that Noah went on a rant about all the haters, when 99% of the season, everyone has had UF pegged as the eventual champs...

I think thats more haters of Noah than UF. Face it, no one likes that boy (except UF). Look at the thread thats on every school's boards. You guys have it here with his head on a ballerina and as the "Lord of the Dance," dancing with Emit Smith from Dancing with the Stars, etc. I saw it on Tenn's and UCLA's and everyone else's. Noah hates everyone for hating him. If you read any articles (I can't find links right now) that are written in Gainesville and interviewed Noah, they talk about how this tournement has been harder for him because he is the focus of a lot of hatred. I know, he needs to suck it up. He uses that as motivation, but you can tell off the court it is getting to him (yes I know, he needs to suck it up again, he brings it upon himself). There very well could be many things out there where he was talking about the team being disrespected, but most of what I've read its a personal thing.

To read this board you would think ESPN (who LOVES the Big Ten and refuses to give any SEC team not a defending champion any credit, like us all season long in football) was calling for your program to be shut down.
Had to pick this up skatesuf, because you were trying to be ironic. Truth is if you literally took the second half of that sentence "ESPN ... was calling for your program to be shut down" and imposed it in the period 2003 - 2006 you would have been reflecting reality. ESPN had a hard on for ruining the OSU Football Program that would require help from a nurse if induced by Viagra. All based on largely uncorroborated statements and one Friend(less) journalist's article.
Bottom line, if your athletics program is at or near the top ESPN is not your friend - regardless of your conference affiliation. They are in the Extremely Sensational Noise & Pornography business - and right now Florida gets the bullseye.

It sounds like something that would happen on Swamp Gas where Gator Alum get banned for saying Chris Leak had a bad game.
Have to laugh at this, Swamp Gas is without doubt one of the funniest boards, though not in a good way, if you know what I mean.

Where do the really witty or bright or knowledgeable Gator Fans post BTW? It would have been great to cultivate some useful debate last year (and who knows how many times in the future).

I think I was banned quicker than anyone else in the history of Swamp Gas. I made one post and immediately had my account deleted. One of the mods over there wrote something saying talking about how great Chris Leak played and how awesome he is and how he should be the number one overall pick in the draft. This was right after a game where he threw like 6 INT's and just basicly sucked donkey balls (don't get me wrong, I'm a Chris Leak fan, but if he's playing like sh!t I'd be the first to say that). There was a huge thread about how I'm not a Gator, I'm a troll and no "true Gator" would say something like that about their QB, blah blah blah.

This time of the year, there aren't any boards that are very active. As much as UF is trying to convince the media and Billy D we are both a football and a basketball school, we're a football school. Most of the better boards are the much smaller ones (which sucks bc theres not too much discussion going on).

Hey Buckeyes!

Cwise back again to say congrats on the FF win and good luck tommorrow night.

I would have done this sooner, but I've been spending much time on the KY and Arky boards telling everyone why my coach isn't leaving.

That said.....

This game will be very much like the game you guys played against us (Mem), except that Florida has the best low post front court in the nation, and we have Joey Dorsey.

I say it will be similar because FLA likes to run, they play great pressure D with few Double teams, and they shoot the ball well and have several players that can step up for them.

That said, they are the best team in the country, and they looked like it vs OSU in dec, and Sat vs UCLA. But let's not forget they also had some very bad games late in the year (LSU?) But you guys don't need them to play a subpar game to win. You do need the following to happen, though:

Oden must play a lot of minutes, and dominate on defense. He can't let Horford and Noah win the post battle. He can't rebound from the sidelines. On offense, he just needs to do the same stuff as always, rebound and make free throws.

Your guards need to score some points. Butler and Lewis HAVE to make some big shots Monday, and whoever Brewer is guarding (Lewis) needs to draw a couple fouls.

This game will likely hinge on (assuming GO stays on the court) Mike Conley. And if that's the case, I like your chances. That kid's a special player.

Anyway, the game has multiple story lines and should be very entertaining to watch. Good luck Buckeyes.

What I see happening is Oden getting fouls called on him for breathing because Noah cries like my four year old daughter, but Noah using the Haq-a-Shaq defense all night and getting away with it like he always does.

What Happened When Florida Lost This Season?

Worth asking this question - What happened when Florida lost this season. Also might be worth asking the converse, what happened when Ohio State lost - but more on that in passing.

Now I'm going to simply start the ball rolling here with some straightforward statistics and observations. What would be great is if this can be tied back into the kind of excellent analysis JagDaddy did earlier in the thread.

So - in no particular order of importance.

Major theme - All the 5 losses Florida suffered were on the road. (Which is also true of the Buckeyes 3 losses).

Minor theme - who was missing from the roster? Well Brewer was out against AC bottom-dweller FSU, he also saw less than full action against Kansas. Other than those clear cases you have the Hoford out, well in versus Ohio State, but as they won that game it is not part of this list. In the case of Ohio State Oden was missing for their loss to North Carolina and was in one-handed pre-season mode against Florida and arguably not fully recovered by the time of the first tilt against Wisconsin.

Florida loss against Kansas 11/25 -
Foul Troubles Hoford fouled out with only 9 points, Green and Noah both collected 4 fouls, scoring well 25 and 17 pts repectively.
Rebounds - they were out-rebounded 37-35
Scoring Field - outscored by Kansas .537 on 30-56, vs 29-65 for .446
Scoring 3-pt - outscored Kansas .346 to .308 (4-13 to 9-26)
Free Throws - 18-27 for Kansas, 13-22 for .591

Preliminary assessment - Hoford's ouster and limited scoring coupled with Kansas free throws, FG outweighs Florida's advantage from 3-point range.

Florida loss vs Vanderbilt 2/17 -
Foul Troubles - no significant individual foul troubles.
Rebounds - Out Rebounded Vandy 28-20
Shooting Field Goals out shot by Vandy 35-36 .571 (vs 22-50) from the field.
Shooting 3-pt range out shot by Vandy 10-21 .476 vs 8-21.
Free Throws - Vandy gave up more fouls than Florida. Florida converted 18-22 FT attempts to Vandy's 9-14.

Preliminary assessment - Defense? We don't need no stinking defense! Vandy simply outscores and out shoots Florida despite toying with foul trouble themselves. An interesting loss that Florida fans attribute to late season blahs, though to a far less physically gifted team.

Florida loss vs FSU 12/3 -
Foul Troubles - Hoford fouls out.
Rebounds - Out Rebounded by FSU 26-23
Shooting Field Goals out shot FSU 24-44 .545 (vs 27-58 .466) from the field.
Shooting 3-pt range out shot FSU 8-19 .424 vs 5-15 .333.
Free Throws - Close - FSU converted 11-15 vs 10-15 for Florida

Preliminary assessment - Too many 3-point shots taken by the defending National Champs in a rivalry game. Question for those who saw this up close, what tacticalyl forced Florida out of it's normal game? FSU's defense?

Florida Loss vs LSU 2/24 -
Foul Troubles - Hoford fouls out with 13 points in game which Big Baby missed for LSU, Brewer was limited with 4 fouls and 11 points. Not foul trouble but clearly limited production from Noah 0 points on 21 minutes of play.
Rebounds - out rebounded 34-22 (!)
Shooting FG - outshot by LSU 23-45 (.545) vs 21-47 (.447)
Shooting 3 Pt range - outshot 4-12 (.333) vs 2-17 (.118)
Free Throws - outshot 16-24 (.667) vs 12-22 (.545)

Preliminary Assessment - Going cold once is an error, going cold twice, against a depleted squad, is certainly not acceptable. Late season blahs or not, Florida simply were not up for a lesser LSU squad. Another loss with a player fouling out.

Florida Loss vs Vols 2/27 -
Foul Troubles - Brewer fouled out with 12 pts. Noah (8 pts), Hoford (17 pts) both with 4 fouls, 3 other Florida Gators carrying 3 fouls.
Rebounds - out rebounded the Vols 35-24.
Shooting FG - outscored by the Vols 29-50 (.580) vs 27-57 (.474)
Shooting 3-pt range - outscored by the Vols 7-17 (.412) vs 6-21 (.286)
Free Throws - outscored by the Vols 21-34 (.618) vs 16-20 (.800)

Preliminary assessment. A - Another fouling out another loss. B - If once being lax late in the season is an error and twice unacceptable what is a third instance? C - If the Vols had converted their free throws at anything near a .750 rate this would have been even worse than it already was. Lest we forget, this loss was to a Tennessee team that the Buckeyes beat twice, once in regular season play - perhaps Oden's first really full game against a quality opponent. Second in this tourney in what was a comeback for the ages.

Summary -
Three of those losses came late in the regular season. I know the Florida press tries to push those late season losses into the lax, and meaningless game columns. Fact is though that there was still much to play for - had these losses been given weight by the seeding committee they could easily have cost Florida a top of top seed placement in the tournament. So, I don't buy the late season blahs explanation. One loss OK, that is a night off. Three such errors is another issue. Perhaps they were quite simply outplayed?

Thoughts anyone?

1968: Beat Houston 89-85 in Final Four consolation game (lost to North Carolina 80-66 previous game)
1999: Lost to Connecticut 64-58 in Final Four semifinal.

Check your history first...

Hey everyone, Florida fan here.

I'm so pumped to see both our teams play tomorrow night. I was pulling for OSU to beat Georgetown so we would be able to play you guys for the basketball version of the BCS Title Game. Good luck and it should be a great game. By the way, I'm not trying to start any trouble.

I also agree with you all. Joakim Noah is pretty ugly. Talented, but ugly.
