THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

INDIANAPOLIS -- Evan Turner scored 20 of his 28 points after halftime today to lead the Ohio State men's basketball team to its second upset of a ranked team in less than a week, a 67-62 win over No.7 Notre Dame in the Hall of Fame Showcase in Lucas Oil Stadium.
The unranked Buckeyes (5-0) led by two points at halftime and extended their lead to 10 before holding off a Fighting Irish rally that narrowed Ohio State's advantage to a point with 26.2 seconds left.
Center Luke Harangody, the Big East player of the year last season, started for Notre Dame (6-2) after missing the previous two games because of pneumonia and led the Irish with 25 points and 16 rebounds.
Turner finished with 28 points and 10 rebounds. OSU freshman B.J. Mullens added 11 points and seven rebounds.

Bob Hunter commentary: Ohio State, Turner seem to grow up overnight

Sunday, December 7, 2008 3:46 AM
By Bob Hunter

INDIANAPOLIS -- It has been the kind of week for the Ohio State men's basketball team that any parent would recognize, the one in which your son went off for his first day of school, your daughter slipped on her first prom dress or a teenager landed his first job.
It's a time when you marvel at growth that for some reason you didn't recognize. The kid doesn't look quite the same as last week. The kid doesn't look the same at all.
With the Buckeyes, those moments have shown up in a lot of places this week. There was Jon Diebler shooting lights-out from beyond the arc Tuesday in Miami. There were freshmen B.J. Mullens and William Buford logging quality minutes yesterday against Notre Dame. There was Dallas Lauderdale blocking shots and making life more difficult for big lug All-American Luke Harangody.
And then there's Evan Turner.
The sophomore guard sat the last 12:18 of the first half with two fouls against the University of Miami and then exploded in the second half. He finished with 19 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals in the Buckeyes' upset of the No. 21 Hurricanes, then was back at it yesterday against the No. 7 Fighting Irish.

Ohio State's Evan Turner, center, drives for a shot against Notre Dame's Luke Harangody. Turner scored a career-high 28 points.

INDIANAPOLIS -- Thad Matta has been labeled a recruiter extraordinaire. The Ohio State men's basketball coach is 41 going on 17 occasionally, the recruits' best friend, telling them they can shoot threes until their arms fall off.
Then the kids sign and find themselves playing defense until their lungs explode.
"The biggest thing is he teaches us how to compete and play hard," sophomore Evan Turner said. "Defense is all about toughness, and he teaches a lot of toughness."
It helped the Buckeyes finish off a tough week in unprecedented fashion.
Ohio State's full-court pressure and matchup zone held No. 7 Notre Dame 25 points under its average yesterday, and the Buckeyes got a career-high 28 points from Turner to upset the Fighting Irish 67-62 in the Hall of Fame Showcase in Lucas Oil Stadium.

Buford keys early run in OSU win

INDIANAPOLIS - Too young and too new to be taken all that seriously when the season started, the Ohio State basketball team might be forcing everyone to re-think that assessment.

The Buckeyes, who played two juniors, three sophomores and three freshmen, outlasted a No. 7 ranked Notre Dame team loaded with veteran players and beat the Fighting Irish 67-62 here yesterday.

Ohio State (5-0) used a pressure defense to force Notre Dame into 38 percent shooting and limit the Irish, who hit 19 3-pointers in their previous game, to just seven. Ohio State sophomore Evan Turner, who played every minute and had 28 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Buckeyes, said it came down to a test of wills.

"The tougher team wins the game, and we were focused enough to be tougher out there," Turner said. "Against a good shooting team that's also strong inside, you got to play tough defense every possession. We always felt that our defense leads to baskets, and that was what happened out there."

OHIO STATE
Buckeyes stun No. 7 Irish

Sunday, December 07, 2008 Doug Lesmerises
Plain Dealer Reporter

Indianapolis- No more questions about last season. Last season's Ohio State basketball team never won a game like this.
"That tells you that we're a totally different team," said OSU sophomore center Dallas Lauderdale (Solon).
Saturday's 67-62 win over No. 7 Notre Dame certainly will propel the Buckeyes (5-0) into the top 25 for the first time since they lost the national championship game in April 2006. Coupled with Tuesday's win at No. 21 Miami, the week reasserted the Buckeyes as a Big Ten contender and shoved them back into the men's national college basketball discussion a year after missing the NCAA Tournament.

Very nice game by the young Bucks, they played very good defense against a very good team. Turner came up huge and Dallas was an intimidating force down low, you could just tell the ND players were thinking about him when the had the ball in the lane. Harongody is damn good. Good game by all the Bucks, Mullens was solid, Buford came up big when scoring was needed, Lighty flashed the D all game long Deibs didn't let his off par shooting and fouls affect the rest of his game and Crater and Simmons did a good job handling the point and playing D. It'll be good to see the BBall Bucks back in the top 25.

Really proud of our guys and how they rebounded and defended.

You can see Mullens getting more comfortable every game.

What I'm really interested in seeing is when Kecman joins the team and gives us even more of a presence underneath, especially on defense.

What a great kid Evan Turner is.

The kid's a great player but what an excellent representative of the Ohio State University.

I have not read this entire thread so I apologize if this has already been said. I would like to see Buford get more minutes and I am sure he will as the season progresses but I would like to see it start sooner. Lighty is not bringing much to the table offensively and I would not mind seeing some of his minutes go to Buford. I think Buford, Lighty, and Diebler minute should be distributed a little more evenly. I also would like to see BJ get a little more playing time before we get to the Big 10 schedule.

I think the zone defense helped against a great shooting outside team but it did leave LH a lot of room to operate inside. I was surprised that he did not get many buckets on rebounds or what I would call easy buckets. He got most of his points because of his little jump shot.

It was a very good win for a very young Buckeye team and I was very pleased that the only had 11 turnovers for the entire game. If they can keep that number down to that almost every game, we will be in every game.

good call on Buford. Diebler getting into foul trouble gave him an opportunity yesterday. Things were looking hairy until Buford stepped on the court.

down 8-2 and he hits a nice pull up "J", comes down the court and sticks a 3....quick 5 points, and from there tOSU just settled in.

Plus, he blow by and continuation dunk were sick. Too bad no continuation in college....would have been all over the highlight reels.

Definitely one of my favorite moments at the game.

It was ridiculous the explosiveness he showed on that play. He just got a step around the defended and exploded towards the rim. Cool play, even if it didn't count. :)

His explosion on that play was just ridiculous. I rewound it like 4 times, I am still amazed he was able to get up that quickly and stuff it home.

While I am VERY happy about this great win for our young team, we cant let it get to our heads. We have a very tough Butler team on Saturday and it wont matter to Butler where we are ranked, they are still going to come out and give us their best shot. If we can stay focused after this big win and come out with the same fire on Saturday, you really gotta like our chances of being 9-0 heading into a big home matchup with West Virginia.

Buford/Lighty

i'm not sure where i stand on the issue. buford is great on offense, and he's athletic as hell but Lighty is playing some incredible defense. as long as turner is playing the way he has been i say leave in lighty for now.
