Ohio State 65, Michigan 55 (Final)

Not a whole lot of thoughts from me on this one...

Nice bounce back win, even tho it took us a while...Played shitty at times and played well at others...

Liked what Diebler and Hunter brought tonight...

Still no offense for stretches...

Honestly I think we will see a totally different team Sunday...

To be honest, I don't understand all the optimism from this win. Sure it was a Big Ten win and I love beating Michigan.

But we played poorly. You would have thought that getting destroyed from 3-land by Iowa would have gotten us out on shooters, but I was amazed at how many open looks they had from 3. Their percentage wasn't great, but only because they missed a lot of uncontested shots that Iowa hit. The first half, they had 4 or 5 layups off of cuts where we didn't rotate over. We came out flat, no fire, and were lucky to only be down 1 at the end of the half. We weren't scrapping for loose balls, we weren't making good decisions on the offensive end, and evidently no one has ever seen Udoh play before because if they had, they would have realized he is an excellent shot blocker and you can't drive right at him.

Butler just looks dead tired out there. I really feel for him, because we couldn't get up enough to give him a break until really late. He did make some very nice passes, looked like he was really trying to involve everyone else. I hope he gets a couple of days off this week because he has earned it. We need him fresh for Indiana.

Turner had a rough game, but why didn't he take any shots? I remember one series where he passed up a wide open three to pass to Hunter who shot an open three. Hope he just thought he saw something with the extra pass, and it wasn't confidence issues.

Diebler finally started to let it fly. His first shot looked a little tenative, but it got better. His shot, when he is lacking confidence, it looks like he is not jumping up as high, and shooting on the way up. When he was hitting, and in warm-ups, he is getting up higher and shooting at the peak of his shot. That pull-up jumper was nice, hope we can see more of that.

Hunter dominated the game offensively and defensively, he played very hard, took it to the rim with authority a few times, and was good on defense in the second half. Good rebounding and blocking out. Tough test against DJ White.

KK- I absolutely love the fire he plays with out there. He started out shooting pretty well, then struggled a bit. But he was playing with fire, he was getting his teammates pumped up, and he was even playing to the crowd a little bit. I just get the feeling he loves to be out there playing and thats really refreshing when you watch the body language of some of our players.

Overall, this was a win against an awful team. It shouldn't have been that close. I liked the way we played in the second half, but if we come out like that against Indiana we will be down by 20 at halftime. We need to do a better job getting out on open shooters, and continue to move the ball on offense. Besides the fact that we beat Michigan, can't say I was that happy with the way we played.

Buckeyes pick up pace just in time Second chance escapes Wolverines once OSU gets coach's message

COLUMBUS: Ohio State coach Thad Matta called a timeout with 16:34 left in the second half after Michigan connected on its second consecutive 3-point shot to go ahead by five points Tuesday night at the Value City Arena.
Forward Othello Hunter could see the fire in his coach's eyes during that timeout. ''He just sat us down and yelled at us,'' Hunter said. ''And you could see it in his eyes he meant business.''

Bucks zone out Wolverines

Wednesday, February 06, 2008Doug Lesmerises
Plain Dealer Reporter
Columbus- Coach Thad Matta wouldn't di vulge the tweaks to Ohio State's zone, but whatever they were, the Buckeyes' defense late in Tuesday night's game was one Michigan men's basketball coach John Beilein had rarely seen.
"It's a high pressure zone; it's really unusual," Beilein said. "They're very good at what they do."
When the Buckeyes needed it most down the stretch, Matta would raise his fist - the signal, according to sophomore David Lighty, that Ohio State really needed a stop.

Buckeyes respond vs. rival
Matta's timeout helps OSU regain focus in win

COLUMBUS Othello Hunter and his Ohio State teammates saw their coach's eyes during a second-half timeout and got the message.

"We knew he meant business," Hunter said.

The G-rated translation of Buckeyes Head Coach Thad Matta's message?

"It's time to play," Matta said.

Sitting on the brink of their worst loss of the season, the Buckeyes followed their coach's advice just in time.

Ohio State held struggling Michigan to one field goal in the final 8:32 and went on to beat the Wolverines, 65-55, on Tuesday at Value City Arena. It took a second-half rally for the Buckeyes to overcome a team that has just one Big Ten win and five overall.

Buckeyes defense puts clamps on UM
Hunter scores 15, Diebler 14 for Ohio State

ASSOCIATED PRESS

COLUMBUS - Ohio State coach Thad Matta installed a new defense, and it worked. Despite allowing nine 3-pointers, five in the second half, the Buckeyes blanked Michigan over the final 4 1/2 minutes for a 65-55 comeback win last night. Ohio State (16-7, 7-3 Big Ten) worked more of a half-court, trap zone in the latter part of the game. "Coach put in a new defense today and when he put his fist up we had good stops," Ohio State guard David Lighty said. "Pretty much every time he put his fist up, we got a stop." Matta was coy about the new zone scheme and didn't talk too much about it, saying the Buckeyes have nine games left in the regular season. Othello Hunter scored 15 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to help Ohio State rally for the win.

Ohio State's Jamar Butler goes for two against Michigan's C.J. Lee.

Terrelle Pryor will have Ohio State and Michigan fans on the edge of their seats today.
The schools themselves nudged them there well ahead of time last night. That is, if the fans were paying attention to two back-in-the-pack men's basketball teams on the eve of national signing day in football.
Some 15 hours before Pryor, the nation's top high school quarterback, is reportedly ready to choose between the Big Ten's gridiron goliaths, their men's basketball teams staged a contest that, like Pryor's, was not decided until the last minute.
Late to the thread - but Lighty's dunk near the end of the game made me spill my drink. I thought he was going to lay it in and then BOOM! (John Madden voice)
Yeah, that was very nice! It was funny because when he first took off with it, I was so hoping he'd take it to the rack and not pull it up to run the clock...sometimes you just gotta send a message! :)
