Ohio State 60, #11 Michigan State 66 (Final)

I'm disappointed that we lost but at least we didn't get blown out the way it looked early on. Right now I just feel sorry for Butler. If he got any quality help at all they could win a few of these big games but it just seems like it is all him. I realize this is a very young team and all I just wish they could come together and give Butler some help. One guy can't do it by himself for a whole season and the longer he goes without help.....the more I think he'll get run down energy wise. Hopefully he gets help soon and we can get a big victory over the Vols. GO BUCKS!

I understand what youa re guys are saying, but I think that we should be past the moral victory stage...WE have a half a season under our belt...There was no reason for us to go up there and lay an egg for the first 17 or so minutes of the game...

Yeah it was great to see us come back, but Hunter is a senior, Lighty has been through games like this, Butler let them take him out of the flow in that time...It wasn't necessarily the young guys that had the deer in the headlights look, it was guys that have been there last year...

Yeah we can find a way to build on this, but if we were to lose I would rather us just play a solid game and lose to a better team...Instead of playing like we are scared in the first half...

If we put the first half of the purdue game and the second half of MSU together we play a compete game...But it is like we are the tale of two halfs...

It lays on the upperclassmen to get the job done IMO, and hopefully they can install some confidence in guys like KK, Diebler, Turner, Hill, to take care of business...

After UT we have two home games with Minny and Illinois which won't be easy, so if we can win at UT that would be a season changing win and then the 2 home games would go along way, but from what I have seen I don't see us winning at UT and see us maybe finding a way to lose one of the two at home...Really hope that I am wrong...

Also don't take this as a giving up on the team post because it isn't that in anyway, just that we are no where near as far a long as I had hoped at this stage, and I am more dissapointed in some of the upper classmen that are playing like frosh than the frosh not shooting well and turning the ball over...Also our rebounding is driving me nuts, but we knew that would be a problem all season, but we have to find a way to get to lose balls, long rebounds etc...

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The difference in Jamar Butler's face last night and Saturday was a sign of the progress the Ohio State men's basketball team made in three short days.
On Saturday, there were red blotches beneath his eyes. The senior point guard looked like he'd either been crying after an upsetting loss at Purdue or, more likely, driven to tears as he exhorted his teammates to follow his lead and play as hard as he does.
Last night, there was no mist in those eyes. There was even a smile after the Buckeyes' 66-60 loss to No. 11 Michigan State, their second in a row in the Big Ten.
"I'm proud of those guys in there," Butler said outside the team's locker room in the Breslin Center.
The Buckeyes (12-5 overall, 3-2 Big Ten) solved a couple of problems against the Spartans.
They responded to a deficit of 21 points in the first half by reducing it to as little as three early in the second half and not letting it exceed nine the rest of the game.
They also responded to Michigan State's defensive pressure by taking better care of the basketball, turning it over only 10 times, half as much as they did at Purdue.
They did not, however, solve a season-long shortcoming on the defensive boards, and it was pivotal.

Spartans find range in beating Ohio State
Butler scores 21 for OSU, but gets little help

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Drew Neitzel flicked his wrist and pumped his fist after finally seeing a 3-pointer go through the net.

It was not just another basket for the preseason All-American, or an ordinary game for No. 11 Michigan State.

Neitzel scored eight of 13 points in the first half, helping the Spartans start strong and regroup from a humiliating performance with a 66-60 victory over Ohio State last night.

"Yeah, we made some steps in the right direction - as a team and individuals," Neitzel said with a smile. "I'm not fully up to my potential, but I'll get there.

"It was a win, and that's all we can ask."

The Spartans (15-2, 3-1 Big Ten) led by as many as 21 points in the first half and held off the Buckeyes in the second in a bounceback game after being held to their lowest point total in more than a half-century.

MEN'S COLLEGE BASKETBALL #11 MICH. ST. 66OHIO ST. 60
Spartans school Buckeyes

Wednesday, January 16, 2008 Doug Lesmerises
Plain Dealer Reporter
East Lansing, Mich. -- The two-time defending Big Ten champs officially entered underdog mode Tuesday night, as Ohio State was forced to scratch back for a moral victory when a 30-point loss was staring the Buckeyes in the face at Michigan State.
Their eventual 66-60 loss to the No. 11 Spartans gave the Buckeyes their first two-game conference losing streak since March 2005, but after trailing by 21 points 16 minutes into the game, they had to take it.
"In an environment like this, you're thinking guys are going to quit," said senior point guard Jamar Butler, who had to wear his teammates like a backpack in their uphill battle. "That Purdue [loss on Saturday] I felt like guys pretty much gave up. But after Michigan State went on that big run, we showed a lot of pride."
Pride doesn't score, though, and Butler put up Ohio State's final 14 points over the last 8:24 of the game.
His teammates went 0-for-5 from the field and 0-for-2 from the line while committing two turnovers during that stretch. Still, the Buckeyes had four chances to cut the lead to four points in the last five minutes, but Butler missed two 3-pointers, David Lighty missed two free throws and P.J. Hill missed a drive. Two late Evan Turner turnovers also eliminated opportunities.
"I would say not just in that situation, but I need help from the beginning of the game all the way to the end," Butler said of the scoring load. "I need somebody to go with me. That's what I'm searching for right now and hopefully I'll find it."

Similar to Daquan Cook, I just don't think his game is suited for college ball.

heh,you keep making this point, but an explanation is always missing in action. Please explain how the Big Ten sixth man of the year's game was not "suited" for college basketball. Have you seen Tennessee play? They have a couple guys who play like Cook, they seem to be doing okay in the college game. Daequan's game had nothing to do with Ron Lewis being a straight up senior assassin, or Lighty being a great defender. Last year Ohio State had 2 phenoms, and 2 seniors who did most of the scoring, this prevented Cook from fully breaking out, but his game was most certainly suited for college.

In Kosta's case,he just needs work, plain and simple..needs to get better in every facet of his game. I fail to see how he would flourish in the NBA right *now*. Contrary to what college heads will tell you(who really aren't nba heads and rarley watch the games, but feel the need to voice their opinions anyway)they do play *defense*,they are athletic, they are talented, and most are not *soft*. I keep reading that he needs to play the 4..huh? he seems to be around the perimeter as much as he's in the paint. He's trying to play his game,he's just in a slump. He tried to face up Suton at the foul line and Goran made him fadeaway. That doesn't lead me to believe that he would do better in the NBA. He just needs work..studying someone like Kevin Love would help. He could learn a lot like passing out of double teams and rebounding techniques.

I saw the second half of the Purdue game and most of the second half of this game. This team will lose 6-8 conference games if it doesn't start gelling. I don't want to sound too negative, but I haven't been impressed by anyone but Butler, and we've been blown out by the three big teams we've played. Thad had better right the ship, or we can start booking tickets for the NIT...

If things don't change, we might not make the NIT. Keep in mind that the NIT now has automatic bids for teams that win their conference regular season but lose in the tournament. So basically, every scrub conference gets a team in the NIT and good teams are left out. Last year Dayton beat 5 NCAA tournament teams ( Louisville, Creighton, Holy Cross, Miami, and George Washington) and did not make the NIT.

I don't know if I would agree with the statement about Butler. Someone needs to step out and help him for God's sake. He can't do it all by himself but nobody is helping him out when he is being double teamed on the perimeter.

Lighty seemed to have regressed from last year. He, like many of the other guys, are enamored with their jump shots. Lighty best game is when he is taking it to the rack. Did he forget that?

Poor Hunter is stuck all by himself underneath the basket on offense while Kosta and Twig seem to be happy out on the perimeter shooting. Yeah, Twig helped us out last night with some of his three-pointers but he doesn't hit those three-pointers on a consistent basis from game to game.
I think their best team might be with 4 of the smaller players playing was one of the big guys.

I can see how Matta can be frustrated with his team because I know that I am. They don't even know their responsibilities under the basket in a zone defense.

Lets not jump off the cliff.....we just lost to a very tough Purdue team and a top ten MSU team.
Hold me back because I don't know. The Big 10 is not a power conference this year and if we don't get a couple quality wins we might not make the tournament.
