Ohio State reduces 21-point deficit, but Butler can't do it all

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The difference in Jamar Butler's face last night and Saturday was a sign of the progress the Ohio State men's basketball team made in three short days.
On Saturday, there were red blotches beneath his eyes. The senior point guard looked like he'd either been crying after an upsetting loss at Purdue or, more likely, driven to tears as he exhorted his teammates to follow his lead and play as hard as he does.
Last night, there was no mist in those eyes. There was even a smile after the Buckeyes' 66-60 loss to No. 11 Michigan State, their second in a row in the Big Ten.
"I'm proud of those guys in there," Butler said outside the team's locker room in the Breslin Center.
The Buckeyes (12-5 overall, 3-2 Big Ten) solved a couple of problems against the Spartans.
They responded to a deficit of 21 points in the first half by reducing it to as little as three early in the second half and not letting it exceed nine the rest of the game.
They also responded to Michigan State's defensive pressure by taking better care of the basketball, turning it over only 10 times, half as much as they did at Purdue.
They did not, however, solve a season-long shortcoming on the defensive boards, and it was pivotal.
