Jesus, reading these articles from other school papers doesn't give me much hope for the future of sports journalism. It reminds me of something Sparky Anderson said about baseball, "For the next ten years, pitching in the major leagues is going to be terrible, then it's gonna get worse.".

Anybody sat in 27A before? I'm in row 4 and hoping these are sick seats for my first game.

Pretty sure that is about where my tix for the OU game were. Pretty good. High enough up that you're not watching the game "through" the team on the sidelines. It's a bit close to the endzone so your perspective is a bit screwed up... but it's all about the good times in the shoe. You'll have a really good view (maybe even a bit too close) of the scoreboard for replays.

I think that we were 27A Row 5 10-13.

Enjoy!

Penn State season recap and outlook on Saturday's game.

As with Michigan State, anxiousness and nervousness surround this game. As I said last week, anything can, and will, happen on the field. But we DO know what has happened, so I figured I'd go back and see how both teams have gotten to where they are now, and how each was feeling and looking as they moved through their schedule. I'll grade out each game, see any trends, and see if I can show what we may see this Saturday.

Week 1:

Penn State opened the season at home to play the FCS (Former D1AA) Costal Carolina Chanticleers. Not even a good D1AA team, this game was over before it started. It actually was close in the 2nd quarter, when Costal made it 14-7 finding a seem in PSU's secondary for a 33 yard TD pass. But Derrick Williams returned the following kickoff to the house to put PSU up 21-7 and they just kept going from there. Penn State put up more total yards than they had since 1995. Daryll Clark looked good in his first start, and everyone in the two deep got to contribute on both sides of the ball before this one was over. The offense looked good, but this was a very bad Costal team.

Ohio State played YSU at home. Ohio State's offense didn't look amazing, putting up 43 points and almost 500 yards on a bad YSU team. OSU kicks 5 FGs and has lots of good drives stall. Beanie looks great until he gets hurt. Boeckman and Pryor both look good. The defense did look great. Maybe it was YSU, but YSU couldn't move the ball at all. They pitch a shutout and look great doing it.

Overall, Ohio State didn't find out much, other than that Wells was hurt, since they were playing such a bad team. PSU didn't find out that much either, since they were playing a team just as bad. Both teams got looks at new QBs, Pryor for Ohio State, and Clark for Penn State. Both looked impressive, as did both teams running games. The biggest story from week one for both of these teams was the injury to Beanie Wells. At this point Penn State fans couldn't have felt better about their start, and Ohio State fans were happy with the way the team played, but scared about Beanie beign hurt.

So far in the season both teams have been equally impressive.

Week 2:

With pass-rushing end Maurice Evans and fellow starting defensive lineman Abe Koroma suspended, Penn State stayed home and hosted Oregon State. After this game, Oregon State has proven they are a better team than what they showed in the first two games. Penn State started strong, and put Oregon State on it's heals early by getting up 28-0 early in the 2nd quarter. They were led by Evan Royster, who had 141 yards and 3 TDs on 17 carries. Clark also added 61 yards and 1 TD on the ground to his 215 yards and 2 TDs though the air. Jordan Norwood had a huge day, catching 8 passes (1 TD) for over 100 yards. The defense played well, even though they gave up 342 yards, they stopped Oregon State when they needed to, only giving up 14 points and picking off two passes. But with Evans and Koroma out, there wasn't much more you could have asked for.

Ohio State stayed home to play another cupcake, Ohio...and it doesn't go as easy. Ohio State struggles badly on offense. They struggle moving the ball at all, and a huge bad snap gives OU a big TD. The running game is not good without Beanie. OU holds the Buckeyes in check in the air as well. Boom Herron looks decent and does get a big score in the 3rd. Up until then Ohio State had again had to settle for field goals. They stall out when they get close to the goaline. Finishing drives seems to be a problem. The Buckeye defense again looks good, but against a not so good team. They only allow one TD drive, and hold OU in check other than that. In the end, special teams and a turnover by the defense help the Buckeyes win, but it is a game the offense should have done better in.

Overall, Ohio State finds out that they aren't as good on offense without Beanie, but that their defense can win games for them, even when the offense is not good. Penn State finds out they are deep and talented on defense, and may have quite a few stars on offense. Ohio State's offense is starting to look very suspect, but their defense looks ready to lead the team. Penn State has shown that they can look strong against a BCS conference team, and that they are rolling on all sides of the ball. Right now Penn State looks like the better team out of the two, playing consistantly, no matter who is on the field. Ohio State looks like it's offense is in disarray, but a great defense can keep them in the game.

Week 3:

Penn State goes on the road for the first time, but it's to play one of the worst FBS teams (D1A) in the country in Syracuse. It was the same old song for the Lions. Getting up EARLY and often. With almost 400 yards in the first half (191 to Syracuse's 5 in the first quarter) they scored 38 points, making them 3 for 3 in scoring 35 points in the first half of their games so far. Daryll Clark didn't need to play in a big chunk of the game, but still threw for 163 yards and 2 TDs. Jordan Norwood had another big day with 2 TDs and again over 100 yards recieving. But teammate Deon Butler did the exact same thing as well. Evan Royster had another 100 yard day, on just 13 carries. It all came too easy for the offense, and the defense held Syracuse to just 159 total yards and was held without a first down until the 2nd quarter.

Ohio State goes out west and plays USC. A early drive using both Pryor and Boeckman looks good. Ohio State moves the ball, but again stalls out and has to settle for 3. After then it was all USC. USC passed efficiantly, and ran when they needed to. They didn't put up big yards on Ohio State, but they scored TDs on 4 good drives and an INT return, and even though OSU could move the ball some, they never could put another drive together and get in the endzone.

Overall, Penn State now knows that whether it is at home or on the road, this team can play well. Although it was against a horrible team, this team did not play down to it's oppoent. Ohio State now knows that without Beanie, the offense really does struggle. The defense may have just looked good against bad teams, and reallly not be that great. Ohio State fans have to be dissapointed with the way their team has played so far, and calls for Terrelle Pryor to start are loud and numourous. Penn State is starting to look like the team to beat in the Big Ten, and has shown that they will go up big early in games, and not play down to oppoents.

Week 4:

Penn State heads home to play, what is becoming a recurrig theme, another horrible team. This time it is Temple. Penn State has proven it can beat up on bad teams, and they don't dissapoint this time. They have their lowest point total in a first half of the season, only 31 :slappy:, but were held scoreless in the first quarter and had to get all those points in the second quarter. Penn State fumbled the ball five times, but only one was recovered by Temple. Penn State looked sloppy early, and often, but Temple's defense was so bad, that they still were able to score any time they didn't play horrible. Temple's offense was bad, and Penn State stopped them with ease, holding them to 3 points and 138 yards. Penn State spread the wealth on offense, with 10 players catching passes, and 6 players with more than 10 yards rushing. Clark threw his first pick of the year, but looked good besides that, and Devlin, his backup, got pleanty of playing time again.

Ohio State has to come off a loss and play a better than people realize Troy team. They play well. Pryor gets his first start and throws 4 TD passes and is VERY efficient. Pryor and Herron look decent on the ground. Even though Ohio State doesn't put up the yards, they put up the points and don't stall out on drives. The defense plays well. They keep forcing turnovers through the air, and they play decent against the run, not letting any big plays get them. Troy moves the ball a little bit in the first half, but is completely shut down in the second half.

Overall, Penn State is starting to look like "We can beat creampuffs" University. They had not come out flat against the creampuffs before this game, but they did in this one. Temple was so bad though, that it wasn't hard to get on track for them. Ohio State bounces back well, and Pryor looks good. The defense looks like it still can dominate games. Penn State still looks like the team to beat in the Big Ten, but eventually it would be nice if they got tested on at least one side of the ball.

So far this season Penn State is looking far better than Ohio State.

Week 5:

Penn State gets their first real test. A home game against Illinois. Illinois has ended up not being as good as they were thought to have been, but they still have a decent offense. This was a back and forth game until Derrick Williams returned a kickoff for a TD, giving Penn State a 14 point lead. Illinois knocked it back down to 7, but Daryll Clark led the team right back down to put Penn State up by 14 for good. Clark was efficiant, with only 181 yards, but 2 TDs and 70% completions. Evan Royster had a big night with 139 yards on the ground on 19 carries. Clark added 50 of his own on the ground with a touchdown as well. Clark and Royster looked like a big threat, and Illinois defense was nowhere near good enough to slow them down. Derrick Williams is also looking like the great returner and player that Penn State thought he would be when they recruited him. He also led the team reciving in this game as well as having a recieving TD and rushing TD. The defense gave up 189 yards on the ground and 19 first downs, but had 2 big turnovers and did just enough, holding Illinois to 24 points. But hey, Minnesota and Louisiana-Lafayette were able to hold them to 20. Homefield advantage and offense won this game for the Lions.

Ohio State opens up Big Ten play at home against a Minnesota team which hadn't lost the game, and still hasn't other than this one. The final score is 34-21, but it wasn't near that close, with Minnesota getting late scores against with 2nd stringers in Ohio State's front seven after it was 34-6 Buckeyes. Pryor doesn't throw much, and Boeckman gets some time, but doesn't throw for much either. They both throw TDs and don't make mistakes. But there isn't much yardage gained in the passing game. The offense stalls a couple times again, instead of putting it in the endzone for 6. The running games sees Beanie back, and he gets over 100 yards on 14 carries. Pryor runs the ball for almost 100 yards as well, and it's the running game that runs all over the Gophers. The defense plays extremely well, Minnesota struggles moving the ball or scoring until very late in the game. For a team that has scored a bunch of points, Ohio State sure makes them look pretty bad on offense.

Overall, Penn State is showing that their offense is playing well together, and they will be able to win shootouts when their defense can't stop the other team. Ohio State plays very well and is very balanced, and is starting to gel on all sides of the ball. This is Penn State toughest test of the year, and they passed, but again how good is Illinois really?

At this point Penn State still looks better than Ohio State, but not by as much as earlier in the year.

Week 6:

Penn State goes on the road for the first time in the Big Ten to take on Purdue. For the second week in a row, Penn State doesn't blow out the competition, but this time it's against a team that they should be blowing out. With the score tied at zero in the second quarter, Penn State was stopped on 4th and goal from the 1, but after the play the refs decided they were going to look at the play before, which was not overturned, but the refs said that since they were reviewing the 3rd down play, the 4th down stop didn't count, and on Penn State's second try, they scored a TD. This turn of events, plus two missed field goals by Purdue, were all that Penn State needed to win by 13. It wasn't a great day for the Penn State offense. They did what they needed to do, but stalled out a few times, and weren't very good on 3rd down (4-12). Royster had 141 yards and a TD, and Clark found the endzone on the ground, but couldn't find the endzone through the air, having a few drives stall out. Painter could not lead the Purdue offense into the endzone, and threw one pick. His backup Joey Elliott led Purdue to a late TD, but it was too little too late. Purdue struggled to run the ball well at all. Derrick Williams again had a good day with 5 receptions, and Royster had a big day out of the backfield with 4 catches for 53 yards. Royster stole the show on offense, and was more than enough.

Ohio State goes on the road for the first time in Big Ten play against Wisconsin. This game is close throughout, but in the end Terrelle Pryor finds a way to lead the Buckeyes to game winning TD drive. But Ohio State does find itself stalling on drives again early in the game, and struggle to get yards through the air. Pressure on the QB is a problem, as it has been for a lot of the season. The running game looks good though, as both Pryor and Beanie have a TD, and Beanie runs for 168 yards. The defense plays well, especially forcing two big turnovers, especially the game ender with Malcom Jenkins. They hold PJ Hill in check, and do give up some rushing yards but not any huge plays. The defense played soft in the second quarter, but got very strong in the second half, similar to what we saw against Troy.

Overall, Penn State played a little sluggish on the road, but was just too good on defense for Purdue. Ohio State was lucky to come away with a win, as Pryor shows he has what it takes to win. Penn State finally won a game with defense, but they shouldn't have had to, as Purdue isn't the greatest team there is. Ohio State finally won a big road night game, and was led to victory by Pryor.

At this point Penn State still looks like the better team overall, but Ohio State is playing just as good of late.

Week 7:

Penn State and Ohio State switch oppoents. And Penn State goes to Wisconsin for another big night game in Madison. Wisconsin though, looks like they have packed it in for the year. Penn State rolls all over them. Derrick Williams has a punt return, and is starting to look scary. The team doesn't run the ball well, but scores a lot of points due to Wisconsin's four turnovers. In the second quarter Penn State scores 21 points on the punt return by Williams, and then two short TD drives set up by a Wisconsin fumble and a short punt. Penn State has a big third quarter, with nearly 200 total yards and 17 points. That was more than all they would need. Royster was held to 60 yards and 1 TD, but Clark had 2 scores on the ground, and 1 through the air, as he passed for 244 yards on 64% completions with a TD and his second INT of the year. Lydell Sargeant comes up big on defense for the Nittany Lions with two interceptions.

Ohio State plays it's easiest Big Ten foe yet, in Purdue, at home. The Buckeyes go ahead early on a blocked punt and that's all they would need. And all they would see of the end zone. Ohio State again has problems with drives stalling out, and struggles in the redzone. Pryor does not make any mistakes, but does not make any big plays either. Beanie has some good runs, but falls short of 100 yards, although he was sick all week. In the worst effort by the offense since the USC game, they still don't turn the ball over and play with the lead for the whole game, eating up a lot of clock by running the ball most of the time. The defense plays lights out, only allowing a 50+ yard field goal. Purdue stuggles running the ball, and has to turn to Painter to throw over 50 times. Ohio State's pass defense ends up just being too good to allow Purdue to move the ball much, and make stop after stop.

Overall, Penn State gets up early in the second quarter and dominates the third quarter to blowout Wisconsin. They show that they can take advantage of turnovers and when they smell blood, they will strike. Playing on the road at night in a hostile environment did nothing to slow them down. Was Wisconsin just out of it, or is Penn State that great? Ohio State shows that the offense can play horrible, but the defense and special teams can win games for them.

Week 8:

Penn State hosts Michigan at home and breaks a 9 game losing streak to them. Penn State calls this their first real test, but if 2-5 Michigan is their first real test, then it proves how crappy they think their schedule has been. No team has yet to put forth their best effort against Penn State, especially on defense, but Penn State has taken advantage and not played down to opponent. Except for the first half of this game that is. Penn State started out slow on both sides of the ball. Michigan had 185 yards in the first quarter, and got up to a 17-7 lead. Penn State started to turn it on before the end of the half, and just took over the game in the second half. Royster had an amazing run where he broke a huge group of tackles to score a 44 yard TD to get Penn State on the board, as they were down early 10-0. Brandon Minor led the Wolverines back to the endzone with his second TD. Penn State gave up 202 rushing yards to Michigan. But once Michigan got down, they couldn't pass to get back in it, only having 89 passing yards. Royster ended up with a season high 174 yards, and Clark threw for a TD and 171 yards, but more impressive he had 2 rushing TDs and 45 yards on the ground, showing off his dual threat abilities. The game was still within nine points early in the 4th quarter, but Michigan's offense could do nothing, and their defense just couldn't stop the Lions late.

Ohio State goes on the road for its biggest test of the year to face Michigan State and Heisman candidate Javon Ringer. The Buckeyes stop Ringer, Hoyer, and all the Spartains, while on their way to scoring their greatest point total of the year, 45. The offense was clicking early, as both Terrelle Pryor and Beanie Wells tore up Michigan State on the ground, and Pryor was very efficiant early through the air, throwing a TD pass to Robiskie and long 56 yard pass to Hartline. Pryor ened up 7/11 with 116 yards, but he didn't need to pass much with the big lead his legs and Beanie's legs got the team. Beanie and Pryor looked like men amoung boys when it came to running around, through, and over Michigan State's defense. The defense held Michigan State to 52 yards on the ground, shutting down Javon Ringer. The defense also created five turnovers. Including two big fumbles in the fourth quarter that were both returned for TDs. Even though the Buckeyes scored twice on defense, they still had the ball more than 10 minutes more than Michigan State. They also had two interceptions, and made Michigan State pass, but still held them to 188 yards passing. This was by far the most impressive game for the Buckeyes on both sides of the ball. And it came on the road.

Overall, it took Penn State awhile to get going. They started out sluggish, but then came though and played well against a bad Michigan team at home. Ohio State took a page from Penn State, getting up early and never looking back, but they did it against a team that is better than anybody Penn State has seen so far. Penn State is looking great, but has been a bit more up and down as of late. Ohio State started the season slow, but now they are looking stronger, and are gelling at the right time. Ohio State's overall season so far does not look as good as Penn State's, but Ohio State has gotten a lot better than they were early, and are playing as good of football now on both sides of the ball as Penn State is.

OVERALL FOR SEASON: Ohio State B, Penn State A-

Overall for the season Penn State has looked better. They are graded at an A- for the season, while Ohio State goes from a B- to a B for the season after their win against Michigan State. If you look at just the Big Ten games though, Penn State is graded at a B+ and Ohio State is graded as a B+. So it shows you how the teams have evened up since Big Ten play has started. Both teams didn't look overly impressive against Purdue, but Penn State looked much better against Wisconsin than Ohio State did. But how much of that was Penn State, and how much of that was Wisconsin giving up on its season?

It looks like Penn State has been impressive all year, but has yet to really be tested. They have not been in a very close game in the 4th quarter, or had to come from behind late, so if they find themselves in this situation, it could be tough for them. Ohio State has had games where they have needed a late score to win, or had to hold off a team late to hold on. They have also had blow out games, having been on both ends of blowouts. They have seen it all, and they have played a much tougher schedule than Penn State. Penn State's defense isn't playing it's best football lately, but it's offense is dynamic, strong, and consistant. They can beat you any way. Ohio State's defense is playing it's best football as of late, and the offense looks like it has turned a corner, esepcially with Beanie healthy. With the way these two teams are playing, it looks like it should be close, with a slight edge to Penn State. But having the night game edge at home, with the fans behind them, and the fact that Penn State does not play well at Ohio Stadium, this turns a slight Penn State edge into a slight Ohio State edge. I expect more of a defensive battle than an offensive shootout, especially with questionable weather. The low scoring cloes game plays into Ohio State's hands. I think Royster will be held in check, and Clark will turn the ball over a couple of times, but will also make some big plays. Derrick Williams will look good, and may have a big play. But I think the combo of Beanie and Pryor against the Penn State D will look better than the Royster/Clark combo against Ohio State's D. I think Ohio State's defense will look impressive and steal the show. I go with the same score I predicted last week and the same score of our last night game. Ohio State wins 20-17.

Go Bucks!!!

GReat breakdown.
I did it after the MSU game, and after doing it i felt a lot better about the game, and was a lot more certain we would win, since I studied each game in depth. After doing the same for this game, I feel the same. I really am much more certain we will win after this. They just aren't that much better than us, it's almost a wash, and being at home just makes us a favorite in my mind.

nice breakdown, but your score is too low. they haven't been tested, haven't played a defense, and its at the shoe. i'm thinking we win 31-10 ish.
