Ohio State 54 Butler 51 (Final)

Looked a little lost in the second half at times. When they got the 14 point lead they didnt know how to stomp on their throats and take it completely away. Missing free throws like that is just unacceptable. Lighty had a good game today. Dallas was a stud, a usual. Evan pressed a bit and Diebler didnt get many opportunities. I liked how BJ came off the bench and sparked us a bit. We need more from Crater and Buford. Got the win. Settle it down now and get ready for the next one.

Well I haven't got to see our team play besides today but atleast we go the win although it wasn't that pretty. I also thought Turner was trying a little too hard but that might be because of the national spot light that he brough on himself after that ND game.

Just a few thoughts. I do not think that Butler was that great of a team and we should have beaten them by double digits. I know that the players just got done with final exams but I really do not want to hear that excuse for a lackluster performance.

They could have practiced their free-throw shooting during exam week and that certainly would not have exhausted them but it certainly would have helped them today and down the road.

Thad, please get out of that friggin zone defense. I don't know if they are protecting someone or what but it is now working and just spreads the floor so that other teams can penetrate. In addition, it calls for a lot of reaching because you have a tendency to stand still and guys get an initial step on their defensive player on the way to the basket. It also makes it very difficult for our big man underneath the basket to get out into the corner. I guess it would be different if we were playing a 2-3 rather than a 1-3-1 "match-up.

I also would like to see Ohio State push the ball up the court a little faster after a rebound or even a made basket by the opponent. This would allow possible opportunities for some easier baskets by the Buckeyes and would not give the opponent that much time to set up their defense. It is my opinion, that we have a tendency to walk the ball up the court way too much.

Our guys also need to get back on defense a lot quicker or Coach ought to make them run gases during the week to get them into better shape.
They beat two quality opponents last week and I don't know if that got into their heads too much but they did not look very sharp today and there is a lot of room for improvement.

Also, after today,
I would not mind seeing Dallas and BJ on the floor together more often. They would be a very difficult matchup for many teams. However, the big guys must stop rushing their shots when there still is plenty of time on the clock. It was a victory but they still have many things to improve upon both as individual players and as a team.

I see this one as a bit of a reality check. A win is a win and the guys really hit the free throws last week. Hard to not have a bit of a letdown. They will learn something from this one.

not the best performance....but keep in mind:

Butler was in the bonus with THIRTEEN minutes left in the second half. 7 fouls in seven minutes. And if you go back and look at the tape, 5 were non-calls in regular Big 10 play. Evan sat for long periods on the bench in foul trouble, and there was never any rhythm on offense in the second half.

Butler climbed back into the game, after being down 13 by mostly shooting free throws, and 3 point shooting by Hayward.

Not a great performance today, but if you can't touch an offensive player as a defender, it's tough to get stops or prevent them going to the stripe. Once Butler got the momentum, OSU could never get it back. Thankfully, they were able to hold on and get the W.

Through games of Friday, Dec. 12 the Buckeyes were ranked no. 2 in the nation in total defense by kempom.com (Ken Pomeroy's sabermetrics on college basketball). We just held a good-shooting Butler team to 51 points. And you want to abandon our defensive approach, saying it is "not working."

Defense is definitely not the problem. Butler got, what, 25 points off of one guard who got hot from 3? That's half their total.

Today's issue was shot selection, awful free throw shooting and missing some three point shot which have been falling in previous games.

Foul trouble on Turner didn't help matters in the second half.

Credit to Butler for hanging in there and chipping away at us when we weren't on our game. The Bucks can't show up like this for a B10 game or it's going to be an L.

Still, we'll take it and move on. It's looking pretty good as far as running the table OOC, which is important, because the B10 is going to be a war every night.
