Ohio State 47, Coppin State 39 (Final)

From what I heard, I'd have to disagree with the "good" part of your statement. It counts in Matta's quest for another 20-win season, but this was as bad of a win as you can have in my opinion. Out-rebounded, turn-overs gallore, poor shooting by key players, no emphasis on inside shot selection, and even bad foul shooting - all against a vastly inferior opponent. I'll take a W, but this was a downright crappy win.

Just my honest 2 cents.

Absolutely concur. I watched every minute of this disaster and it was as uninspired/unemotional/flat/disinterested, disturbing a performance as you can imagine.

They regressed tonight, plain and simple. Makes you wonder what in the hell is going through these kids heads.

As far as how young they are, it doesn't excuse them from giving effort. They pull one of these in B10 play and they'l get beat by 40.

Against Butler Diebler did better than in some of the previous games.

Im just curious, are we like in a different dimension or something and the only way we can communicate is through this internet site. Cause in my dimension Diebler went 0-4 from 3 against Butler. Im also wondering if its still considered bashing to say Turner should start over Diebler because he brings more to the table and is more ready, since now its pretty clear Matta feels the same way. So if anyone disagress do I get to use the "You think youre smarter than Matta" defense?

I'm with you, turner looked good tonight. He brings a lot to the table and I really like his overall game. IMO Diebler will develop into a premier shooter at this level sometime in the next few years, but Turner should be the guy now. Just seems more complete at this point.

Sounds like you have so built up bitterness for some reason, PennBuckFan, and it's probably not going to do you a lot of good to dish it out in an "I told you so" fashion.

That being said, I agree that starting Turner was the right choice tonight. Diebler showed his value in the North Carolina game, but other than that, he's in the slump of slumps. Turner brings much more activity on the glass, more driving ability, and maybe more speed to lose balls. As long as Diebler is struggling, take the pressure of starting off of the kid and let Turner do his thing.

I guess in a way, I'm disappointed that I agree with you because I'm a little bored and was looking forward to you starting an argument with me. :wink2:

Defensively this team has been there every game, other than maybe getting the defensive boards, but we make teams work for good looks, make them run the shot clock down and harass them all over the floor...

Now offense is a different story...It just sucks to see them struggle against a team that is not bigger, stronger, quicker than them...Yeah they were in zone, but we have to use the size to force our way into cutting lanes, to force the guards to get the ball down low because you are open...

There is a reason we can't get the ball inside, because they guys aren't getting position, then the guards arent moving the ball, they arent slashing, they aren't going anywhere with the dribble...It reminds of the old shell drill we did in high school where you just pass the ball around the perimeter...

I will never give up on a team in anyway and the talent is there for this team to breakout, and they will...Hopefully they are ready for Florida when they come here...

BTW that alley-op to Hunter was a thing of beauty and there were almost two but Wallace couldnt grab the other one...

One other thing I would like to see us do more in transistion and try and get into the lane more off the dribble...

Folks we won. We have 2 Seniors and 6 new players on the team. As much as everyone would like to be like the football team this year as far as reloading it's not the same. Was this game pretty and the blowout we wanted? No. This years team is a work in a progress and it's not what we do in December that matters it's what happens in March. With this many new players we'll be a light years ahead of where we are now come seasons end. This isn't football, one game doesn't make the season. Bad signs are out there but Thad will have this team grow. Take one look at his final season at Xavier. The ship isn't sunk cry, bi*tch and moan if we stink it up like this late in the season.

To the Dbags that think Butler is on par with Coppin State, not a 25 team, worse than Oregon State and Northwestern because they're not a BCS team, and have no big men. They lost to Florida after having the game tied with 3 minutes left in Sweet 16. They return four starters off of that team.

Well first things first I got extremely lucky tonight and was able to get free tickets tonight. Not only that but they were center court in row B. I was 3 and a half feet from the court and Jimmy Jackson. Still can't believe how great the seats were plus me and my girlfriend had a great time. Now to the game........ I am more than frustrated after getting to see this team up close because to this point what I have seen on TV unfortunately played out tonight. Other than Butler and sometimes Hunter this team is just plain soft. There is no one in that starting group of guys that wants to hit anyone AKA box out/set great picks. Our rebounding is just straight horrible. I can't tell you how many times I watched guys stand flat footed, not boxing anyone out, just reaching with their arms. There is a reason they got it handed to them on the boards and it's not because they were playing Zone defense....had nothing to do with it. I'd love to see someone on this team that cares enough about getting that ball/rebound to the point where they drive the opponent out of bounds with their box out. That's what good teams do. That's what winning teams do.
On the plus side I saw Evan Turner and Jamar Butler being the only guys that know what to do when we go into a cold slump.....we need to drive to the basket and try to get to the free throw line, something this team is just now starting to figure out. Hopefully they keep this up because it will help put an end to our dry spells scoring wise and help us to win in the big ten.

They have lots of work to do but I still believe the talent and ability is there it's just a matter of want to. Improve the rebounding and getting better offensively are musts as well as getting Kufos to play big. He plays like he is 6'5 sometimes.....he has to play like a 7 footer and use his length to his advantage. If Matta can get these things to happen I have no doubt this team can compete for a Big Ten title this year.....if not, we may not make the tournament this year. Hope Matta gets after them after this game and that we keep improving with each and every game. GO BUCKS!

Kosta plays like a euro big man. He likes to hang around on the perimeter. Matta needs to get on him about attacking the hole.

To all the "basketball" experts out there that said Evan Turner was a PG, take the gas pipe. Jamar Butler is one of the all time OSU greats.

Buckeyes squeeze out victory

Ohio State walks away with 47-39 win after losing last two games to ranked opponents.

By Associated Press

Tuesday, December 11, 2007
COLUMBUS ? Evan Turner scored 13 points in his first collegiate start to lead Ohio State University past Coppin State 47-39 on Monday night.
Jamar Butler added 13 points for the Buckeyes (5-3), who had lost their last two games and three of the last four, all against ranked opponents. They were outrebounded 32-22 by the smaller Eagles.

Turner started in place of another freshman Jon Diebler, who had started the first seven games for the Buckeyes. Diebler, Ohio's all-time leading high school scorer, was shooting just 21 percent from the field and 17 percent on 3-pointers.

MEN'S COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Ohio State Buckeyes defeat Coppin State in men's college basketball

Tuesday, December 11, 2007 Doug Lesmerises

Plain Dealer Reporter
Columbus -- They weren't tired. Yet after a nine- day break filled with practices intended to re-energize them, the Buckeyes were shocked to be struggling with a small-conference school brought in to provide the home team with a win.
Trailing nine minutes into the second half, Ohio State avoided its first men's basketball loss in 12 tries against schools from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference by awakening for a 47-39 win over Coppin State. It was Ohio State's lowest point total in a victory since beating Georgetown in 1981.
"We allowed them to take the life out of us," Ohio State coach Thad Matta said. "[The intensity] was not as high as it needs to be."

Turner leads Buckeyes past Coppin State
UPDATE: 11:01 PM, Monday, December 10, 2007
BY RUSTY MILLER
ASSOCIATED PRESS WRITER

COLUMBUS Coppin State slowed the game to a series of 35-second possessions and it took Ohio State almost the whole game to figure it out.

In the end, Evan Turner scored 13 points and made several big plays down the stretch in his first collegiate start to lead the Buckeyes past the Eagles 47-39 on Monday night.

Asked if his team had played quicker in their earlier games, Coppin State coach Ron ?Fang? Mitchell smiled.

?We played like we were chasing somebody who had stolen my wallet,? he said. ?This was a different situation. I had to tell the team that that?s not the tempo we need to play at to be successful.?

So the Eagles slowed it down, setting a mark for offensive patience unseen around Ohio State in more than 47 years.

Men's basketball: Buckeyes snap out of skid
Freshman has key role in first collegiate start

RENEE SAUER Dispatch
Ohio State's David Lighty applies defensive pressure against Coppin State's Julian Conyers. The Eagles shot just 35.6 percent from the field.

The halftime act was something called Quick Change, a man and a woman magically changing their appearance in the blink of an eye. If only coach Thad Matta's job was so quick and easy.

Jimmy Jackson said that rebounding is effort.

The effort is there...
I beg to disagree. Effort is lacking big-time except for Turner, Hill and Butler. Kosta Koufos is 6 inches taller than any opposing player and gets ZERO TOTAL REBOUNDS.

I do not like this team; what's worse is they play like they do not like one another. Zero chemistry, poor effort.
