Knee injury sidelines NU's Conteh
By Lindsey Willhite | Daily Herald Staff

Two weeks ago, Northwestern boasted a pair of senior running backs that gave the Wildcats one of the Big Ten's finest backfields.
Now the nation's No. 24 team is down to its third- and fourth-string ball carriers for Saturday's key home game against No. 11 Ohio State.
Tyrell Sutton was lost for the regular season with a wrist injury at Indiana, and Omar Conteh has been lost for the foreseeable future as well. Conteh injured his left knee during Northwestern's practice on Wednesday and has been ruled out for Saturday's game.

So who returns punts? I'm guessing Hartline will still be back there to block... any chance we see Flash get an opportunity? I think we opened with Harline and Robo, which wasn't very effective.

Here's hoping we see one of the younger guys (Sanzo, Posey, Flash) step up at WR with the increased playing time that's now available.

Wildcats take on coach?s persona
Fitzgerald was fiery linebacker
By MATT MARKEY
BLADE SPORTS WRITER
COLUMBUS ? Pat Fitzgerald got the best job in his universe, under the worst possible circumstances.

The former two-time All-American linebacker for Northwestern was chosen to lead the Wildcats a little more than two years ago, just eight days after the sudden death of then head coach Randy Walker.

Fitzgerald was a ferocious tackler who was the soul of Northwestern?s defense in the 1995 season, the year the Wildcats won a Big Ten championship and led the nation in scoring defense. He won both the Nagurski and Bednarik Awards and was the Big Ten?s defensive player of the year despite suffering a broken leg in the second to last game of the season.

He swept those three prestigious honors again in 1996 when the Wildcats shared the Big Ten title with Ohio State, and Fitzgerald added the linebacker of the year award from the Touchdown Club of Columbus, where they know a little bit about great linebackers. After a short stint playing pro ball and work on several college staffs, Fitzgerald spent five years as an assistant at Northwestern and then took over as the program was in shock following the death of Walker.

?While this has been my goal from the moment I began coaching, it was also bittersweet,? Fitzgerald said at the time, summing up the stark contrasts of emotions he felt. Fitzgerald was just 31 then, and he remains the youngest head coach in Division I-A.

Since assuming command, Fitzgerald has transferred his fierce competitive fire and tenacity to his team. The Wildcats went 4-8 in his first season and then improved to 6-6 last year. Fitzgerald has the Wildcats turning heads at 7-2 this season as they prepare to host Ohio State tomorrow in Evanston.

?I think Pat has great energy,? Ohio State coach Jim Tressel said about his counterpart. ?Obviously, he has a deep commitment for Northwestern because that is purple running through his veins.?

Tressel said he has watched the Wildcats evolve into Fitzgerald?s team, both with the type of players he has brought to Northwestern and the style of play he demands.

?I think what he?s done a nice job of is making sure that the players and coaches have grown together, and they?ve really worked hard to feature the things that their guys do best,? Tressel said.

Northwestern notebook: As a receiver, Ebert gets a thumbs up

Friday, November 7, 2008 3:08 AM
By Bill Rabinowitz

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
The transition from high school football to college is a big one for any player, let alone one making a position change. Jeremy Ebert is making it look pretty easy.
A quarterback at Hilliard Darby, Ebert was recruited by Northwestern as a receiver. So far, so good. The true freshman has caught 13 passes for 157 yards and two touchdowns heading into a game Saturday against Ohio State.
In an upset Saturday of Minnesota, Ebert caught a 36-yard touchdown pass.
"The catch he made at Minnesota was a big-time college catch," Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald said. "He has a tremendous future in front of him."
Ebert credits his coaches and teammates for helping him adjust to his new position.
"It's gone pretty smoothly," he said. "The coaches are really helpful. They're showing me the ropes. The players here are great and have tried to help me out as much as they can."
When he was a quarterback, Ebert acknowledged, he didn't think receivers had it so tough.
"Now that I see both sides, it's a different story," he said. "There's a lot more running at wide receiver, that's for sure. Wide receiver is definitely a challenge."

I'd like to see Hartline and Posey back there returning punts.

But what the hell do I know?

Get out of evanston injury free and with a W, at this point that's all that truly matters.

So the weather forcast is for 30 MPH sustained winds. Rain and snow mix. I'm not sure who this helps, or what is going to happen. But i've always said bad weather helps the home team and the underdog. Well...I hope that isn't true, because it's going to be nasty tomorrow.

I'm not sure what to expect tomorrow. Anybody who questions my love or faith in the Buckeyes, obviously doesn't usually read my posts. But I'm not sure what kind of team we are going to see tomorrow. Two weeks to sit on this loss could do a number of good and bad things to this team. We don't play well on the road off of bye weeks. I was there at Northwestern the last time we had a bye week before going there, and it wasn't pretty. Northwestern has huge holes at tailback. Their backup QB can run the ball...but i'm still not sure how much he's going to play. But what are we on offense? I mean it's like you never know what you are going to get with this team on offense. Our defense has been damn great! One of my favorite Ohio State defenses ever. But how are they going to respond after playing their hearts out, and it still not being enough against Penn State. It's got to be frustrating. You want to see how good of a coach Jim Tressel is? Watch how this team plays in the first half. See if they are ready. See if the lines are dominating, or not. They should be. Our lines should dominate this game. If they aren't, then something isn't right.

We better played fired up football. This is the first time in a long time that we haven't had the Big Ten Championship in our own hands. I've always believed that just being a Buckeye is enough to want to play for. And I feel like that's the type of guys Ohio State should be recruiting. Guys who realize that being a Buckeye is enough reason to play 100% all the time. That's the type of players that I think Tressel has recruited. Play for being able to wear the same uniform that guys like Tatum, Speilman, George, Horvath, Gradishar, Harly, Speilman, Stillwagon, Janowicz, Cassady, Griffin. Didn't matter Ohio State's record. It didn't matter the score of the game. Those players always played hard no matter what. They knew what it meant to be a Buckeye. Come on guys. This is Northwestern. They are soft. You aren't. You came hear to play football and play hard. Being a Buckeye means sooooooo much more than being a Wildcat. SHOW THAT ON THE FIELD TOMORROW!!!

Oh...and 15 days until The Game!!!

GO BUCKS!!!!

For any of you who happened to be in town tonight and were listening to ESPiN radio (AM1000) here in town, I'd like to say I'm sorry for my 'home town' evening drive guys.

They started talking smack on the suspension tonight. Citing a bunch of spew put forth by one suspended player's father (henceforth known as "He who can SUCK IT.") They mentioned a few of the off field issues we've had this year as well.

But, here's what gets me. The same SOB who was talking crap about our guys was singing the fucking praises of Noel Devine a couple of weeks ago. If he only knew...

If I wasn't 25 miles out of down town (and had not recieved word that my watch was back from the watchsmith -- been in since Aug 26 -- and my new keg was in -- completely blowing foam from the keg-o-rator), I'd have driven downtown and punched that fat SOB Dan McNeil in his fucking pie hole.

He also mentioned how he thought that Ball State would be a top 2 team in the B10 this year. Piece of shit Dan McNeil.

Sooooooooo... since I'm not going to be at the game (I'll be home with a couple of sick kids) if anyone happens to see this fat piece of shit in E-town on Saturday, feel free to punch him right in the fucking jaw and tell 'em it's from me.

I've already had to change radio stations once here in Chicago because my evening drive hosts had contract issues... now I think I'm going to have to go back to the ipod on the evening drive.

Fuck ESPiN, Fuck Chicago radio and Fuck NWU and the purple fucking horse that rode in on them.

(yeah, the new keg is good)

PS. Getting out of Chicagoland w/o anyone getting hurt and one in the W column will be a huge let down for me. I'd like to see tOSU +35. For just getting my watch back and having a fresh keg, I'm in a pissy fucking mood after hearing Fat Man McNeil AND not being able to go to the game. I need to see our Bucks frick'n destroy NWU.

Thank you for your time.
