Game Thread Ohio State 33, Washington 14 (Final)

JUST got home from the game after spending the night and taking family to space needle etc. Had to laugh at comments from MililaniBuckeye about the long climb up to top of stadium. We were in section 48 row GZ, the very last row but the view was excelent, much better than crappy endzone seats we had last visit to UW/The OSU game in early 90's.

Quick comment on Husky fans, everybody was very nice also; some good natured barbs on the bus ride over but nobody out of line at all. Was VERY impressed with the number of Buckeye fans there; the mini sea of red in endzone was cool as well as the number of large groups scattered here and there including my section. Havent been back to CBUS in a few years but it almost felt like home at times.

I thought the crowd was pretty loud at times but that long drawn out siren thing they did has gotta go; it sure did get quiet after we went up 17-7 though :) Nothing much to add to game comments but I was telling everybody out here, more than 2 turnovers and we probably lose; ZERO was very impressive and besides the botched 4th down play the O-Line play seemed light years ahead of the first two games. Despite the crowd noise I hardly saw a twitch out of em, the lack of penalties was a huge plus.

The afterglow from the game was nice and the crowd melted into a true sea of red as all the dawg fans left and it was sweat to hear the carmen ohio notes swelling up to even our nosebleed section. The walk back to the parking lot was filled with the occasional OH-IO and GO BUCKS ringing out as the mostly quiet dawg crowd let us enjoy our victory.

All in all it was a sweet trip to see my beloved Bucks play and having my wife and kids there to see my team in person for the first time was not quite up to a game in The Shoe, but very fun nonetheless.

A few crappy-quality photos from the tail-gate and the game, but hey, I'm not HAYN or jwins...

About a mile south of the stadium, and a couple rows from where we were tailgating:

Looking back towards where we were at (think we were under the gold awning tent):

Just outside the entrance to the stadium:

Best looking trailer I saw the whole trip:

View of the field from the row below we were sitting (to avoid the huge support beam I was sitting next to):

Lots of boats in the harbor at the beginning:

Other side of the stadium (lots of scarlet):

Scoreboard! (where'd all the boats go?):

A second look at what's left from Saturday's Ohio State-Washington game:
Let's hear it for an angry Todd Boeckman.
In his third career start Saturday, the OSU quarterback needed to prove he could handle himself physically, mentally and emotionally in a big road game. Physically, he continued to hang in the pocket and take shots from the defense. Mentally, he checked off to the right play call on his 68-yard touchdown to Brian Robiskie. Emotionally, he's getting it. Mr. Quiet got mad at the early mistakes.

Mili... it's been awhile since I was at Husky stadium for a game. I was stationed at Ft. Lewis in 67 - 68 and caught the Wazoo game and the spring varsity/alum game... but I'm pretty sure the field ran east and west.

As for the Big 10, most of those who live outside the Mid West get their only look at the Big 10 at a bowl game. They fail to consider that it is almost always an away game for a Big 10 team and usually a case of a second, third or fourth place Big Ten team going up against a first, second or third place team from another conference. It wasn't until the 80s that the Big 10 insisted on refs from outside the Pac 10 to call the Rose Bowl (thanks to Woody and Bo). The Big Ten did/does not receive 50% of the Rose Bowl tickets to sell, something on the order of 16,000 tickets to each school and the rest sold locally which assures the crowd will be decidely in favor of the Pac 10 school, especially when it's USC or UCLA.

To say that the losses suffered last January were due to the intensity of The Game seems to me to be close minded. I simply don't buy the argument that OSU - Michigan is contested any harder than Auburn - Alabama, USC - UCLA, Texas - Texas A&M...

it is what happens after those games, taking a longer layoff, going on the road and playing against higher ranked conference representatives in their back yard, that tilts the field to favor SEC/ACC/Pac 10 schools.

When seasons are remembered by what happens during final games, and that's almost always the situation, the bowl games come to be the standard by which teams and conferences are measured, a situation that puts the Big 10 at a distinct disadvantage, or as they say in real estate, location, location, location.

The bolded part is what I thought as well but when we looked it up for the SEC thread it wasn't the case on average. Sure it happens some but its not the norm.

I for one think that the emotion spent by both sides in The Game can sometimes be part of The Bowl Game Blah's we have seen so many times in the past, but in no way shape or form think its an excuse. Just a part of the reason sometimes. Last year was the first time in 6 years we have seen that under JT so I'm inclined to give it almost zero traction myself.

Agree 100% on the home field angle. Don't even get me started on that bullshit. One of the main reasons I am in favor of a playoff in my old age is my dream of higher seeded northern teams getting warm weather schools up to places like Columbus in Dec/Jan for home games of our own.

Just got back to Boston after a red-eye flight. I'm half asleep at my office desk right now, but here are a few comments....

We had a wonderful time. Seattle is a great city, and the UW gameday atmosphere is pretty awesome. It was better than ASU's but doesn't even touch OSU's. The tailgaiting was a blast. The UW fans were very welcoming, and we got to meet Mili (and his nuts), BB73 (and his beer goggles), and HAYN (who can talk smack with the best of them!). I also met Boeckman's and Homan's father (the latter was friggin' hilarious!). Very nice people.

Husky Stadium is pretty intimidating and amazingly LOUD! Our seats really sucked, but we were in the Buckeye section and a few rows below the alumni band, so it was a ton of fun anyway. From a few minutes into the second half the Buckeye fans took over the crowd noise. Husky fans were sitting on their hands and hanging their heads. And by the end of the game, most of the fans had left. After a while you felt like you were in the Shoe.

I'm so glad I made the trip out there. My parents used to live on Whidbey Island, so I felt like I was representing my late father, who would have been one of the first to purchase tickets to that game. Dad is certainly smiling down at the Buckeyes and Tressel, as he got his 200th win.

I have pics to post, which I hope to upload within the next few days.

edit: and I love that the porta-pots out there are called "Honey Buckets".

that's an old time term from when people used a bucket in the house in the winter rather than going out to the outhouse and freezing half to death while they did their business. when it was used, the wife would say, "honey, it's time to take out the bucket," hence the abbreviation "honey bucket."

To all of you that made the game Saturday:

The "sea of scarlet/grey" in the stadium looked great on TV. In addition, you could really hear the Ohio State fans. Tressel even commented after the game during his interview about the great fan support. You all are to be commended. Great job.

You would be correct. One of the Husky fans was saying exactly that at the tailgate (that Husky Stadium was the only stadium in the country to run east-west rather than north-south). Attached is the stadium diagram to prove it:

So, how'd you like my nuts?

I wanted to ask you and Manfred (and BB73 if he's reading this) if it's OK to post our "O-H-I-O" photo. Oh yeah, the "O-H-H-O" photo, too... :slappy:
