Game Thread Ohio State 3, Southern Cal 35 (Sept. 13)

Los Angeles Times: Jake Locker weighs in on USC and tOSU

Washington quarterback Jake Locker faced USC and Ohio State as a freshman last season, so he has an idea what to expect when those teams meet Sept. 13 at the Coliseum.

The sophomore compared Ohio State linebacker James Laurinaitis, a returning All-American and Bronko Nagurski Trophy winner, with his counterparts at USC, Rey Maualuga and Brian Cushing.

"Laurinaitis was pretty fast," Locker said. "He played sideline to sideline."

Locker compared the Ohio State star's style most closely to Cushing's. He said Maualuga was slightly different.

"Rey was a little bigger. He comes up and hits you hard."

Hey... who turned out the lights? Where'd my chin-strap go? Damn you TYRONE!

Did somebody saying crushing?

Locker was very unfortunate to play OSU, UCLA and USC in successive weeks last year. UCLA doesn't have near the defense of the other 2, but clearly took a page out of OSU's playbook and physically beat Locker up.

Having seen it work in 2 games in a row, USC knew just what to do. Locker stood in pretty well under the circumstances, but after 3 straight weeks of being beaten to death, he wasn't quite the same the rest of the year.

I'd like to hear him comment on the coverage skills of the LBs. Li'l Animal's interception where he dropped back when Locker thought he was blitzing was amazing. Most players would've had the ball whiz right by their head. JL's hands were quick enough to make the pick. Then their was the pick-off of the shovel pass.

Question, did you see the hit locker took in the game against Hawaii? Man! He got blasted! Knocked him out of the game and went to the hospital!:(

I remember that I did stay up to watch that game, and that I was very disappointed that Washington did not win. I also remember thinking that Locker was a shadow of what he'd been when the Buckeyes faced him in Seattle. I didn't remember him leaving the game though.

For his sake I hope his OL improves from last year.

That was a sweet play. JL took about three steps in right behind the DTs (who were getting a great push, imagine that), then he just stopped and drifted back a bit. It was almost like he became invisible, because Locker threw it right at him. A very fluid and instinctual play. Freeman has made some similar plays in coverage, Iowa 06 comes to mind. Sometimes when an LB is playing zone and doesn't move after the snap, the QB looks right past him.

He did almost the identical thing against Colt McCoy. Inexperienced QB's, mind you.

That Locker kid is a warrior and seems like a decent guy. I hope good things for him in his sophmore year.

I would agree, and it wouldnt offend me to see the Huskies succeed, I always thought Ty got the shaft from the domers.

Turning my attention back to the game, I am almost giddy already waiting for this matchup. OSU couldnt ask for a better redemption game in September, and sorry USC fans, I really hope they blow them out.

No need to be sorry for being a fan! But, I dont think that will happen! For SC, win or lose [I hope we win of course} I think the score will be close. Just my opinion.:):):):):):):):):):) I know you like those!!!

I think the score will be close to, to be perfectly honest. Both D's are stiff, and both offenses are strongest on the ground.

Doesn't keep a man from dreaming!!!
