Game Thread Ohio State 3, Southern Cal 35 (Sept. 13)

I don't get it. If Ohio State sucks as badly as I keep hearing then why is it such an accomplishment beating them? I mean, this win will have all the talking heads calling USC the greatest team in the history of the game (again).

Biggest win in the history of Penn State football in 05.
NC in 2006 and 2007.

Yet we are horrible. I can't figure it out.

Obviously I'm being sarcastic, and we do have some BIG problems. Hopefully those problems will be fixed quickly. But this is a top 5 program regardless of what happened on Saturday. Ohio State is the biggest game on anyone's schedule.

Win out, win a BCS bowl game against a quality SEC opponent (I'd love to see Florida again and I'm not sure anyone else in the PAC 10 will garner much respect) and it's all good.

Right??

I'm not sure what needs to happen on the D line.

Heyward to DT with Wilson and Gibson staying on the ends? Has Heyward been playing DT? The D line really has me concerned.

I don't know. I really didn't think the D line would be this mediocre. That's a problem with the way that PSU has looked lately. Granted they haven't played anyone, but they are brimming with confidence right now. Confidence can be a dangerous thing.

Everybody will be anointing them as the Greatest Team ever. The Pac Ten looks like a cake walk for SC. Why do I think they'll take someone lightly and blow it. I just have that feeling..................

For what it's worth, my perspective on the game. The d-line was not getting pressure. That is why the D struggled. We need another Will Smith and the Tackles that went with him. Seems to me they are on the way in this and the next class of recruits. Does not help us now though.

On O, I do not think they have an identity, smash mouth or run oriented versus the spread, trick plays keep a defense honest but lose their effectiveness after a few tries. The O needs to know who and what it is, even without Beanie, they should have tried to smash USC in the mouth. That is how you slow down speed. You hit it before it has the chance to move. From the five, penalties and bad play calling cost us the first score, what kind of team are they? Go up to the line and start a fight and keep fighting till the whistle blows. Do not start hitting them when the play is over and getting penalties. That is not the fight I expect to see.

In the end, I think tOSU could have won but there is an identity problem, mainly on "O". Good teams in college will score on anyone. You have to be able to do the same. Our time of possession was great especially at the beginning. They just could not finish the job, and on "O" I think that is because they do not know who they are.

Small said that bit about being a better man and such, well being about football and being about becoming a better man are not mutually exclusive. Being good still has that part of life that includes defending one's self. Goodness needs a defense too. What I mean is that going out and smashing the other team in the mouth is not against goodness, unless it is done outside the rules. The team needs to be confident in themselves and relaxed going into these big games, this would happen if they knew who they were. Trick plays confuse that so far as I can tell, because when they do not, at the five, try simply to run it in with one or two backs in the backfield, something to me is wrong.

Notebook: Buckeyes gave Trojans a slew of opportunities

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

LOS ANGELES -- As Ohio State players, coaches and fans pick through the remains of the Buckeyes' disastrous fall to top-ranked Southern California, they will keep coming back to one topic in particular.
"Mistakes," senior linebacker Marcus Freeman said.
He made some, but so did just about everyone else on the OSU offense, defense and special teams.
There were 10 penalties, the offensive line drawing the lion's share; three turnovers, all by starting quarterback Todd Boeckman (two interceptions, one fumble); four sacks allowed; several USC receivers allowed to run free at critical moments; a bad punt by A.J. Trapasso and a missed field goal try by Ryan Pretorius. Those were just the obvious gaffes on a big stage where they the Buckeyes knew the Trojans were waiting to take advantage.

My only statement - I totally agree this team didnt have "it".

To me I am relieved. The world can now get its collective rocks off - hammer us until they are blue in the face, ESPN/SEC/football 'fans' can be happy now we have lost and everyone is right - We "suck".

I say I am relieved, not because we lost - I am never happy in a loss, I am relieved that now the pressure is off... no 2000 pound weight of an "undefeated season", the world isnt bearing down and microscoping everything we can do wrong. In short, the seniors should be able to breathe, play hard nosed football and not be afraid of choking in the big game.

It has been done and the world knows we can't "win".

All thats left for the seniors is to play for them and their pride, no longer do they have to play for the "world's" expectations.

The pressure is off - lets enjoy the season and watching the seniors play for FUN (Fun= something that provides mirth or amusement).

I say with great pride and RELIEF GO BUCKS!!! :oh:

I just got back late last night so I'm about 50 pages behind in this thread, but I thought I'd pose the same question here I put in the rumor mill...

I couldn't tell who was in on the OL during the USC game from my (incredibly distant) seats. I once watched a game from the roof of Lincoln tower and I was closer to the action... but anyway. There was an obvious change in the line surge somewhere in the middle to late in the 2nd qtr. Was this due to an injury/personnel or did the same guys just get mentally or physically exhausted?

I kind of think our program IS in trouble. Every big game we play the past 3 years we get slaughtered....

Really? Every one? Are my memories of seeing #1 OSU beat #2 and undefeated Michigan false? Winning at #2 Texas on national TV was faked? Beating the Weiss-snot out of Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl never happened?

My bad.

Another poster brought up an interesting point. The pressure is off now. Laurenaitis said that as soon as the NC game was over last year their thoughts turned to redemption vs. USC. That's a lot of pressure and obviously this team does not have the leadership to handle such pressure. Well that's over now. Everyone thinks Ohio State sucks and they are NOT going to get back to the NC game. The only thing left is the rest of the season.

It's going to be interesting to see how this team responds. There really are no (national) expectations now. Win the Big 10. Go to your bowl game and win.

Come to think of it, we may now see a very loose team take the field for the rest of the season. Go out and have fun and see where it gets you. Troy might be in some serious trouble, but we'll see !!

Very interested to see how the rest of this season goes.

I've read the last few pages but can't go back through all of them, so forgive me if this is a repeat. I agree about the D line pressure.

For me, there have been 2 common threads in the last 2 big losses - Boeckman turning the ball over and the O-line playing poorly (as in the Florida game).

I hate to say it, but I'm glad they fell far enough to be completely out of the NC hunt...because I personally could not bear seeing another huge loss on another huge stage that soon.
