Game Thread Ohio State 3, Southern Cal 35 (Sept. 13)

I was thinking about the match up for this game not between tOSU's offense and USC's defense as everyone is concentrating on but rather, tOSU's defense against the Trojan offense. What style of offense gives OSU fits? The spread, right?

USC runs a pro style set and has a quarterback with okay mobility. The Bucks will just need to respect the play action fake and can otherwise tee off on the Trojans. If the Bucks stuff the run early they may not need to respect the fake at all. When was the last time the Bucks lost to a pro style offense? 2003?

I think USC will concentrate on moving the pocket away from and double teaming to stop Lawrence Wilson. This should open up some blitzing lanes for Freeman and Animal to take advantage of and create some big plays. I don't expect any blitzing from the secondary to avoid big plays from occurring.

The Bucks offense will see a steady diet of 8 in the box. Man to man opportunities will be a plenty and the receivers will need to make plays. Beanie playing or not playing is less of an issue than most think based on this. If Boeckman completes a few balls into man coverage any back we have will start seeing room to run. I also think the coaches are very confident in Pryor's ability and will not hesitate to use him as much or more than they have so far.

I thought it was great that Tressel invited Coaches Bruce and Cooper along to travel with the team and be with them through game time. The Vest just gets it. Win or lose, he's the best.

War, Traveler to the glue factory, Boeckman playing error free football, and the Buckeyes silencing their critics and returning to their rightful place atop the college football world!

:osu: GO BUCKS!!!

Personally, I think this game will come down to turnovers. We can't give our defense a short field all day. I don't think USC will be able to run up and down the field on us. Our Defense is loaded and we are deep so the stable of USC running backs won't be an issue. They will have fresh guys and so will we. I would like to see a return to Tressel ball for this game. Grind it out, flip the field and let the inexperienced offense of USC make a mistake that our defense can capitalize on. Unfortunately I don't think Beanie plays. I think they gave it a go earlier in the week and he is sore so they aren't going to risk the rest of the year on one game. Yes this is a big game but if Beanie gets hurt again trying to come back too early and we lose him for the Big Ten season, we may have some trouble. Win the Big Ten first and let the chips fall where they may. He can rest up the next two weeks when we play Troy and Minnesota, then hopefully he will be back for Wisconsin. That being said, I think our special teams comes through and we win by a field goal as time runs out.

JMO but tOSU ,and USC , deserve credit for even staging this game. The Bucks have lined up major teams for years and not much is said for their efforts.
These are the kind of games that make ncaa football what it is and all the talking heads should pay more attention to it.

ESPN says the best game next to this one is ND - Scum. Thats quite a drop off in talent.

:oh: go Bucks
Could not have said it any better! This is what cfb is all about! SEC, take notice!

Damn straight. It used to be the Florida schools bragged about playing each other...now only one of them is worth a crap (well, actually, South Florida is too, but no one wants to play them). I'll give Tennessee credit, they have at least been scheduling games with teams like Cal and UCLA, but other than that, I'm not seeing a whole lot of meat in the OOC down there. USC has played us some, Penn State quite a bit, Ntre Ame (before they sucked)...credit where it is due.

I think alot of the game will come down to turnover differential and where exactly the turnovers occur. We often say "turnovers will be the difference" but there is a big difference between turning the ball over 5 times to once for the other team and turning it over four of those times in your own offensive zone. When OSU lost to Flordia, the absolute key to the game was that they turned the ball over twice deep in their own zone, once on a fumble, once on downs. It's tought to do that against a good team and still stay competitive.
I think both teams can afford to throw a pick or lose a fumble in the opposing teams' side of the field but I do believe that if either team loses the turnover battle by -2 and one of these comes deep in their own territory, they will lose.

Good point, but you also have to convert after a turnover. It's demoralizing for your D to make a huge play and then have the offense not capitalize.

heard Robert smith on ESPN. he said, USC the winner fast, OSU defense won't be able to handle USC'S SPEED ON OFFENSE , with so many weapons and got on the WR'S of OSU saying they can't even separate from coverage.

GO BUCKEYES

Fuck Smith. Anymore, I get nausea when I even have to hear him talk. Pompous Ass.

... while keeping the other guy to fewer points!

Can't forget that second part. Both parts have to be there, at the same time.

Points from field goals while the other team only scores touchdowns count only half as much. And so forth...
