Game Thread Ohio State 3, Southern Cal 35 (Sept. 13)

I just watched the replay of the USC-Virginia game. I think that Ohio State has an outstanding chance to win this game.

Virginia had a total of 43 plays that I would classify as "bad plays". These included turnovers, bad throws, indecision, bad play calling, overpursuit, bad coverage, and penalties.

The Virginia QB is a sophmore that had a total of 300 yards passing as a back-up last year. Of the 43 plays I mentioned he probably made 15 of them, however, when he did make good decisions there were a lot of holes in the USC secondary.

Virginia's running game wasn't great either. They kept trying this end around that was just taking too long to develope. When they did run straight ahead or off tackle it was usually more productive.

Virginia's defense SUUCCCKKKKSSSS!!!!!!!! They played with no heart! They played with no pride! They quit in the second quarter! I'm not sure if Virginia's coaches know what a pass rush is and somebody needs to break it down to them. The linebackers over pursued every other play. The secondary looked confused. It was bad. I will say that when they did play assignment sound football agaisnt the run they were able to stop USC's running game.

Now to USC. It was hard not to take notice of the good things USC was doing since the announcers were slobering all over themselves about it. Sanchez is solid. He passes well on the run when he rolls out. He got hit maybe twice in the game. He had all day long. He is in for a rude awakening on Sept. 13th . He also had at least 3 passes batted down.

USC's either has the best pass blocking O-line in CFB history or Vriginia's defense SSSUUUUCCCKKKSSS!!!!

USC defense didn't impress me. They were solid, but when Virginia's QB decided to do something right it resulted in a nice positive gain.

Alright enough of this. Like I said I feel pretty good about Sept. 13th

Virginia Rivals-ranked preseason 71 out of 120 D1 schools. 5 of last years 9 wins by 2points or less.

Offense Replaced: QB / 3 full time and 1 part time starters on the OL / 3 starting receivers combined for less than RoBo...although I think Ogletree had a med-redshirt.
Defense Replaced: Entire starting DL, Entire starting DB's.

Credit for 1 great OT and 3 good LB's....1 very good. But I ask, how tough could VA have actually been?

Although your post was certainly written with the Scarlet and Grey glasses on, I must say that I agree with several of your points.

Virginia's defense gave up, their offense quit trying, and they never helped themselves out by limiting turnovers or bonehead plays. Also, as many have pointed out, this is not a very good team on paper just like UVA wasnt very good on the field.

That said, you cant watch a 52-7 cleanup of a team with good athletes orchesrated by a QB who was basically flawless besides two bad throws and say "He's going to fold like a house of cards the minute he sees our speed rush." That would be akin to saying "Beanie is going to rush for negative yardagae when he faces SC's defense." I fully expect a healthy Wells to rush for 100 yards+ and a couple of TDs against SC just like I expect Sanchez to throw a couple TDs himself and have a decent outing overall. The game will be won or lost depending on how these two teams execute against each other. There is just not factual basis to look at the matchup and say "No need to worry about this matchup, boys! We're in a class by ourselves!"

Pryor will get see the field against SC because he brings something unique to the table. I think Bauserman will only see the field if there are injuries or if the game is out of reach. Hopefully neither will happen.

erm, i'm not sure about you, but i certainly hope we're ahead enough for Bauserman to see a drive or two.

Well clearly you have to wonder if USC's blowout vs Virginia was due to great USC play, or terrible UVA play. I can say with some certainty (as highlighted above) that UVA played pretty badly. There were a lot of mistakes that are typically caused by coaching and not by lack of talent. Namely, there was a lot of overpursuit by linebackers which were causing WRs to get much more open than otherwise. Now, we have some of the best pass-protection LBs in the country in Little Animal and Freeman. I doubt we'll have that problem at the same level UVA did.

On UVA's offensive possession, USC did a great job of plugging holes in the line of scrimmage with linebackers. But we knew that Rey Marioluigi and Brian "More Pushin' For The" Cushing are probably on a level with JL/MF. Smith our FB looked quite capable in picking up his assigned block on the power plays, however. While USC has better LBs than Youngstown State does, Ali Hightower (did I get that right?) was supposed to be incredible as well, and the first time we ran Power O, it went to the house. So I'm not entirely sure Beanie will be so easily stopped on such I-formation plays.

Also we have to remember that we were watching USC's first team for the vast majority of that game. We were playing our first and second teams for the entirety of our game, with some end-of-the-bench players thrown in. We cleared the bench EARLY. So we can't even really compare. All we know is that if it comes down to a battle of attrition, Ohio State has the clear advantage, having played our 3rd string while USC was playing the Bob Stoops game.

He [Sanchez] also had at least 3 passes batted down.

I find lots of hope in knowing that Virginia batted down at least 3 passes.

Unless Virginia has a better pass rush than OSU or unless Virginia was lucky, OSU can expect to deflect more passes and hopefully get an interception or two. For some reason, I am thinking that Luke Fickell could help out in this area.

I would imagine that this would be hard for Sanchez to address before the OSU game.

The OSU defensive line basically needs to do spell O-H-I-O with their hands and arms while rushing? Or maybe watch some Olympic Beach Volleyball clips?

Trojans using bye week to carry physical play into Ohio State game

Bye week an opportunity for No. 1 USC to get healthy, focus on Ohio State matchup.

Pushing forward ? The Trojans are depending on Kristofer O'Dowd (61) and other offensive linemen to set the tone early against Ohio State.

While some teams might take it light during one of the few bye weeks they receive during the grueling college football season, USC doesn't fit into that category.

With one of his toughest challenges coming up on Sept. 13 against Ohio State, USC coach Pete Carroll wants to use this bye week not only as a time to rest some of his players, but also to find a way to keep USC's intensity level where it was in Virginia.

"I think it's really important that we maintain our level of intensity," Carroll said after Wednesday's practice. "You can lose it, then it can go away and you can't recapture it ... So whatever we can do to find a way to compete and keep the level of focus up, we're going to do it."

Carroll also said he will use this week as a chance to mix things up with his players at different spots on the field.

"This is a fun time for coaches, because we get to experiment with guys and see how far they can take it," Carroll said. "We don't have any results for you yet, but it all pays off in the long run and helps us get stronger so it's good."

The bye week also represents a time to let players heal from injuries.

Junior wide receiver Vidal Hazelton had a protective boot around his sprained right ankle Wednesday, but it was mainly precautionary. Hazelton sprained his ankle late in the Virginia game when he was hit following a play.

An early look at Ohio State

Grant Tunkel

Issue date: 9/4/08 Section: Sports

I know what you're thinking: Already?

The answer is, yes, of course. I know USC doesn't play this weekend and Ohio State plays Ohio, but I figured you could get a head start on preparing for the matchup of the century.

OK, that might be a bit of an exaggeration, but it's a big game. And since the football team gets an extra week to prepare for the Buckeyes, you should too.

I'll give you some information about the key members of the Ohio State squad, as well as some local flavor since I had the opportunity to visit Ohio State in late May.

So I present to you the "Idiot's Guide to Ohio State."

First and foremost, you should be acquainted with the name Jim Tressel. He is the sweater-vest-wearing football coach of the Buckeyes, a venerable gentlemen who is in his eighth year at the helm of OSU.

Not only does he rock the sweater vest with incredible regularity, he loves cheeseburgers without onions and country music (thank you, CoachTressel.com).

Tressel is the master of his domain at Ohio State. Sports apparel stores on High Street (that's the main drag through the university, for those of you who have not had the pleasure of going to Columbus) even sell that sweater vest in their stores, in case you wanted to attend your next golf outing looking like Mr. Tressel.

He has also mastered something else recently - the art of choking in the big game.

I'm having some worries about this game.

I rewatched the USC game as well, and that defense is VERY fast.

People seem to talk more about our O vs. their D more than the other way around.

Our D should give LOTS of trouble to USC's passing game. The one thing I noticed from the YSU game was how willing we were to bring pressure. Maybe it's just a smole screen, but if we can get pressure with 4 or 5 guys.... then expect Sanchez to make a lot of questionable throws.
