Game Thread Ohio State 28, Troy 10 (Final, Sep. 20)

Guys didn't look too fired up today. Maybe it's just that I'm still in a funk, but it was a very quiet win. I was hoping to see a little more energy. TP was definately fired up but did anyone else feel like it was a less than emotional win?

A win is a win though and I'm happy to have TP with his first start and his first full game under his belt. The future is now folks...it'll be very interesting to see this offense evolve over the course of the season and how things change if/when Beanie comes back. Very nice to see the play-action pass and very nice to see WRs wide open down the field. Also, nice to see Trapasso making some plays.

Go Bucks!

* Defensive line is still getting handled and this REALLY concerns me. You know its not looking good when we consistently go with only 3 down lineman in place for another LB. I really want to see Cameron Step up and make an impact with his size and strength.

* DB's played Great I thought. Stood up their blocks well and made some really nice breaks on some passes (Hines has to catch that for a TD). Also they were really hitting in the secondary today.

* LB's missed far too many tackles and once again couldn't shed blocks and were often times a little too late on those screen passes. I for one thought Homan was the best out of any of them today in the LB core. I thought Freeman was virtually invisible today.

* Offensive Line did better today but that could be because TP made them look better by avoiding pressure. There were some holes but I thought the runners today made up for an overall average day for the Oline.

*Wr's didn't do too bad. Robo has to catch that pass that he attempted with one hand. The ball was right there and if he catches that he's gone for 6. Where is Posey/Thomas? I thought Hartline did great today, and it was nice to see the tight ends involved more.

*Quarterback play.. Were do you start really? First he only threw one pass he shouldn't have but for a freshman he is really smart with the ball. I would've liked to see him throw the ball away on that sack he had for -16 but other than that I'm just nitpicking. How many of you think Todd would've been drilled in the back when that LB came in on Terrelle (where he spun out and made a great throw, but it was called back)? For being a freshman it's just so alarming that he already has more pocket awareness than a 6th year senior. I thought the play calling often times didn't set Pryor up to suceed, but the chances they gave pryor to throw he made them pay big. Too many times we would try and run pryor left/right. Not enough first down passes IMO, but a great day for Terrelle. Once beanie comes back, and Terrelle gets more experience with the intermidiate passes look out. A team will have to protect against all aspects of the field in the future.

If pryor progresses at passing look out. You have beanie as a threat up the middle with his strength, Pryor outside with his speed, the deep ball , and hopefully an intermidiate passing game as well. This team if we can get beanie back can really be dangerous in a couple weeks. Hopefully by Wisconsin Beanie can come back. Overall this game was decent, but we could've done a lot better. It's alarming though that yet another team was hanging around till late in the game with us.

I went the game...I was really disappointed in the fans today. I can understand the energy being down, last week was pretty rough. However, there was no excuse to boo Todd...that was really embarassing, I wanted to kick those people's asses to the street.

It left me wondering when Todd didn't play after that (unless I missed any other downs he was in) if part of Tressel's reason for keeping Pryor in was trying to preserve Todd's psyche, in addition to Pryor's excellent play.

And while it may have just been the people around me, there seemed to be quite a lot of the "I know better than the coaches" type of comments from the know-it-all Joe's near me. The guy in front of me threw his hands up in the air in disgust every other play, and didn't even clap when Coleman got the INT or Pryor threw his third TD. We did our best to drown him out and counter his idiotic commentary....I was frustrated too, but I know that it's not as simple as whatever works on Madden 08.

This was my girlfriend's first buckeye game, and while she was impressed by the environment, even she was wondering what was up with a lot of these fans. Hopefully the fans (like the players) can pick up the pieces and get back on track.

Some Post-Game Thoughts....

1. Troy is a decent team. Not great, but better than your average MAC team. Especially on offense. And they had one short sustained drive that ended in a FG and a big play for a TD. Ten points. That's it. Not a bad job by the defense as a whole (but see below).

2. Terrelle Pryor is a waaaay better quarterback than I thought he'd be at this early stage. Superior athletic ability, obviously. But he's also got poise, presence, confidence, and leadership. Sure, he made a few mistakes (taking the huge sack right before the half sticks out, and he got away with a pass that should have been picked). But overall, a great starting debut, and plenty of upside still remains. We have entered the new era of Buckeye football.

3. Boom Herron played very well, but Beanie Wells brings the Buckeye offense to a whole different level. Pryor + Wells = unreal potential. It will be interesting to see whether Herron can claim the starting role next season over incoming freshman Jaamal Berry ... and whether Brandon Saine will ever find his game.

4. The offensive line played better, but there are still some weak spots. It made sense starting only one of the true frosh today (Brewster), especially with Pryor getting his first start, but I imagine that Shugarts and/or Adams will find their way into the starting line-up some time this year.

5. The defensive line continues to be a weakness. Troy had success running right at the DT's, and there was very little pressure on the QB through the first three quarters. However, in the fourth quarter, the Buckeyes went "quick" on the DL (Heyward and Wilson at DE, Rose at NT, with Gibson or Terry as the LEO), and the line did start to disrupt some plays. Now part of that might have been Troy wearing down late in the game, but Rose especially showed that he can use his speed to beat his man one-on-one. Look for more of Mr. Rose in weeks to come....

6. Marcus Freeman has had a tendency to disappear at times, but I kinda thought that he had gotten over that with his performances late last season (Penn State, Illinois, LSU). This season, however, Freeman has seemingly reverted to his old form - although he has 26 tackles on the season (6.5 per game), I can't remember a single big play from Marcus ... and I have seen him out of position and missing tackles all too frequently.

7. I thought that Jermale Hines might be a 'tweener - too small for LB, not quite athletic enough for safety - but he played a Hell of a game today. Ironically, Hines had the same number of tackles as Freeman (seven), but Jermale seemed to be active, aggressive, and always around the ball, while Marcus will be best remembered for missing an easy tackle on a five-yard pass play that went for a 45-yard touchdown.

8. Props to Kurt Coleman for two athletic interceptions. Jenkins and Chekwa were solid as well.

9. A.J. Trapasso was, er, not very good in the first half, but in the third quarter he nailed a couple of beautiful punts that buried Troy deep in their own territory and swung the field-position battle clearly in favor of Ohio State. Eventually the Buckeye offense was able to take advantage of the excellent field position, and scored their third TD on a 2-play, 37-yard drive after Troy shanked a punt. In the fourth quarter, Trapasso nailed a third punt inside the ten, and after another stop by the defense and another shank by Troy, the Ohio State offense scored their fourth touchdown on a 4-play, 27-yard drive. Tressel Ball at work....

10. By starting Pryor over Boeckman, Tressel has finally and forever disproved the oft-repeated (but rarely supported) statement that he won't play underclassmen over established veterans. A good move, and a necessary first step to inject some new blood into an anemic team. But more changes are (or should be) on the way, as there are still a few seniors who are not playing up to their abilities (or whose abilities aren't up to Buckeye standards). I wouldn't be surprised to see some more changes in the near future.

11. All in all, a good start to the Terrelle Pryor era. Win or lose, at least this team will be fun to watch this season ... and next year, look out!

LJB (and anyone else who cares to share):

I've been thinking about this very concept above. And I've been considering if it would have happened had Beanie NOT been injured? It's become evident to me that Beanie is such a marvelous athlete that he was able to make some weaknesses seem unimportant. However, once his he became absent, those weaknesses became glaring.

Do you think that we would have seen TP starting today had Beanie not been injured?

Interesting question.... If Beanie had played last week, there's no way that Boeckman and the offensive line would have looked so bad. However, if Beanie had played this week, there's no way that Pryor and the offensive line would have looked just this good.

Beanie adds an extra dimension to the offense ... but Pryor adds a second ... and the presence of two weapons that have to be specifically game-planned for is what makes an offense nearly unstoppable (pardon the tortured syntax, please). There's no way for a defense to key on both Wells and Pryor, especially if Terrelle can beat them through the air like he did today.

So, I guess that Pryor probably wouldn't have started today if Beanie hadn't been injured ... but that Pryor would eventually have assumed the starting role this year because he's that good ... and because (for whatever reason) Boeckman just seemed to "lose it" somewhere along the line.

Jamaal Berry will be a good one, but Jordan Hall has played with Pryor for many years on the high school level and Pryor may be most comfortable with Hall. We'll see how it shakes out but we got some very good options.

Troy scored 31 on Florida last year and 34 on Georgia. I think you're being too hard on the defense today. There were far too many missed tackles, but overall they did the job.

I don't want to be hard on OSU defense but, all those missed tackles , weakness against the spread and the D-LINE getting handle just stood out. The secondary was the only good news by the defense. OSU defense played well enough for the win but, I thought the DEFENSE THIS SEASON was going to be the strength of the TEAM . Thats what gets me

Thanks for the insight, LJB. I completely understand what you're saying. Like I initially stated, I just wonder sometimes IF the TP would have come to the forefront if Beanie hadn't gotten injured. Obviously, I hate that Beanie has been hurt (as I'm the most proud of him of all the players), but it may turn out to being the catalyst that gets this team going in the right direction after all.

same thought, I just want to see PRYOR/WELLS on the field together. That would be a nice show to watch :)
