Game Thread Ohio State 24, Penn State 7 (final; 11/07/09)

I watched much of the replay of Penn States game vs NW and NW stuck with Penn State for 3 quarters and actually led for a while. Penn State blew it open though in the 4th quarter.

This will be a major test for our Offense. Penn State will be loading up the box, no doubt, and require TP to beat them through the air. Zone read option runs, quick bubble screens to WR, roll outs to avoid pressure, and throwing out of the I Formation with play action, will all be needed to keep the PSU D off balance.

Here's hoping for a good showing by our OL. If they can hold their own, it should be enough to bring home a win.

Anyone else have concerns about the condition of the field at Penn State? I watched the game last week and the footing did not appear to be good.

Are you referring to their matchup with NW? I thought it was in Evanston.

It was. The week before they played a home game against Minny after a load of snow had fallen in Happy Valley. They had the field covered, had a bunch of people haul out snow, and the turf was in reasonable shape for that game.

Snow? That's that white stuff, right? Blows like the sand along the road beside the beach, right? I'm trying to remember. Nope. Guess I might have blotted that one out.

Snow

Snow would make things interesting. Snow or no snow, we have to establish a running game and put points up early. Not worried about thier run game but am about quick slants and mid range passes. Can't wait for this game and it's only Monday. :oh:

Some stats and the challenge we face on Saturday...

A brief overview for those not familiar: the stats I put together look at the overall efficiency of a given team. The data is from the NCAA and includes games played against FCS teams.

- Offensive Points Per Play - Higher is better
- Defensive Points Per Play Allowed - Lower is Better
- OPPP/DPPP is a ratio of the above - Higher is Better
- Offensive Yards Per Point - Lower is better
- Defensive Yards Allowed Per Point - Higher is Better
- "Victory Gap" is Def. YPP minus Off. YPP and acts as a way to show how much more efficient a team is vs. its opposition. Higher is better
So, with that, here's PSU vs. OSU after 10 weeks worth of data. I've made the deltas so that a negative number always means "bad."

Ouch. Not encouraging.

  • PSU has the #1 Scoring defense (we're #6), and the #5 Total defense (we're again #6).
  • Their Def. PPP is #1, we're #3
  • Their Def. YPP is also #1, we're #5
  • Their Victory Gap puts them at #1, making them the most efficient team from a yardage perspective. We're #5
  • Their PPP ratio is #2 making them one of the most efficient teams from a scoring perspective (UC is #1). We're #7.
The numbers tell us they're essentially the all-around most efficient team in college ball.

Of course, you don't have to believe the numbers. The Lions strength of schedule can be debated. PSU lost what was at one point a close game to Iowa, who is nowhere near the top 10 in both efficiency metrics (#26 and #22 in PPP ratio and Victory Gap, respectively, and yet the Hawkeyes are undefeated). Stats can't account for everything.

All I can say for certainty is that now would be a good time for our offense to put together a big game on the road, because statistically, this is the best defense they'll face all season.
