Game Thread Ohio State 16, Purdue 3 (Oct. 11th)

I think the lines problem is in the scheme more-so than the talent. I'm not a fan of the zone blocking.. fire off the line and hit somebody. Watching the game, it's like our line stands straight up.

Secondly, to everyone saying "the gameplan is fine. It's the execution":

From Beanie:
"Just to, you know, have a better game plan."

C'mon.. our stud tailback is even calling for a better gameplan.

As jo said, we had guys open all day, TP just missed the reads. That's not intended to be a bash. But it did happen.

I can recall one situation in which Hartline was wide open, probably for a TD. There were a few other situations that I could tell the crowd was frustrated because it seemed that TP was the only guy who didn't see the open receiver.

I hate saying that stuff about TP.

But I am starting to be a little less hesitant about questioning the playcalling. I've not really been a big fan of it, but it could be blamed on execution. Starting to think our play design/playcalling is a little off. Redzone calls are sometimes blowing my mind. Seems like we forget we have Beanie in the redzone sometimes.

Beanie has the flu this week. Did anyone really expect him to 100% Saturday? He had to keep coming out and by his own adission, was tired.
With this group that means a sub-par performance. We should have seen this coming after last week. A struggling Purdue team not getting the teams attention. A week after a very emotional game. Beanie gets the flu.
Injuries. It all adds up to a ugly performance.
But, we did win! Just ask Illinois and scUM how they feel after yesterday.

But, let's give some credit to a fine performance by the defense and special teams. :oh:

I know Terelle needs the game experience to develope; but he just wasn't getting the ball into the endzone. Anyone else think that they should have put Todd into the game for the the 2nd or 3rd series in the 2nd half to see what he could do?

Only those wishy washy fans who wanted to get TP in the game right at the start of the season , and now having seen the light regarding frosh players, are second guessing themselves once again.

TP just needs to gain experience , the damage is done so leave it be.

1st half thoughts...

Defense...loving the aggressive style with the pre-snap games. Painter is confused and antsy.

Been a few miscommunications on the DL/LBs which has led to a few decent runs from Purdue.

Overall, good effort from the D.

Offensively...so many fans complain about vanilla, plain-jane playcalling but imho, it was the exact opposite that cost us more points in the first half.

Playaction with Beanie in the game is lethal...it gets Pryor moving and it provides time that otherwise is not there.

Beanie is Beanie. Feed Beanie. Everyone straighten out one arm in honor of Beanie.

O-Line--Hmmm. Well, the young talent is hungry. Justin Boren is KOing folks in practice and although he cannot take a schollie, he is working on opening up a few. It is what it is...and we have to accept that this year. Believe about half of what you read regarding the OL...its just not there.

WRs--Pryor loves Posey. That is obvious. Now its time for the other WRs to accept what is happening and get moving. Hartline's lack of focus lately only feeds into the notion that he is not happy. Get over it and play ball.

Not a bad effort overall, but it seems as if there is a constant experiment out there. Feed Beanie, run playaction off of Beanie, get Pryor moving...play ball.

I had kind of ignored all the talk about this assuming it was untrue. And perhaps it still is untrue. However, Brian has made a considerable number of errors this year. At this point, I'm wondering if a change isn't in order.

As much as it pains me (not the agreeing with you part) to say it, I agree. We seem to have so much young talent and speed (see Thomas, Posey and Small; even though he has dad a case of the dropsies too), I was real excited to see Thomas this past week but it didnt quite work out for whatever reason that may be.

Watching other elite teams play, one thing they have in common is their playmakers get the ball in space and when Beanie is on the sideline we either dont have them or dont put them into a position to make them. It is all too rare when we actually see our speed in the open field. Back to the original point, I have know idea if its necesarrily Brian's fault or the coaches or whoever, but there is just too much talent in Scarlet and Gray to not even be a threat to be explosive.

I agree with everything you said here.

As the playcall came in right before his dropped pass, Hartline threw his hands up in a "what the hell kind of playcall is that?" way/rolling his eyes type of attitude...I remember thinking "that's not good"...then he proceeded to run a little hitch and try to take off without catching the ball first. Not like it would have mattered, it was like a 7 yard hitch on 3rd and 16. Still not the type of stuff you expect out of 1) Hartline 2) the team overall.

There's a youTube video of Bauserman doing the same thing on the sideline this year before a play. OSU players should be excited about the playcall. They should be ready to go out and execute it.

It's just disappointing, that the team is responding this way. Not a good reflection on themselves, the coaches, and the university.

Also, I thought the fans were pretty good yesterday. It was the loudest game I'd been at, but I usually only get to the crappy games each year (Miami, OH, Akron, Kent St, YSU...etc). Oh and the booing...it was definitely towards the playcalling, in my opinion. The fans seemed pretty frustrated about the game overall (as was the team listening to the post-game).

Wasn't the best game, but I like seeing W's! It was a 13 point win to a conference opponent...while it could have been better, I have to wonder if people would feel better about the game if it was 31-18...or 41-28. 13 points is 13 points, but I think people would rather see the higher scoring game, whatever.

The D was fantastic. Malcom is the fucking man! Love watching him play.
Beanie is simply special.
The offensive playcalling AND execution is the only downside from yesterday. It just has to improve. No offensive TD's when the D is giving them turnovers and great field position all day, not good.

Anyway, I had a great time at the 'Shoe, the band entrance still gets me choked up everytime. I love being surrounded by Buckeyes and seeing the players do there thing. Simply a great time. Can't wait to get back. I will be at the Northwestern game though, should be like home with how well the Buckeyes travel to Chi-town.

Hm, a few people have complimented the crowd. I didn't see it at all. Terrible from what I heard/saw. Northwest side of the stadium appeared to be snoozing the entire first half and fourth quarter. Third quarter was good.
