On the banks of the Olentangy, stately Ohio Stadium is one of the most recognizable landmarks in all of college athletics. The horseshoe-shaped stadium is a monument to college football. Attending games in Ohio Stadium has become a Saturday afternoon ritual for Ohio State fans, who flock to the parking lots early to enjoy the gala atmosphere and pageantry that surrounds each and every game. Skeptics scoffed at the thought of a 66,000-seat venue, but they were quickly quieted when an overflow crowd of 71,138 showed up for the dedication game against Michigan on Oct. 21, 1922. Since the opening game against Ohio Wesleyan on Oct. 7, 1922, nearly 40 million fans have streamed through the stadium’s gates. Ohio Stadium gets a Wi-Fi upgrade ahead of Ohio State's football 2026 season​

Buckeye fans will have a better experience using their phones at games this fall.​

According to a recent social media announcement from Ohio State IT, crews are installing new network access points throughout the stadium to deliver significantly faster Wi-Fi speeds. For fans in the stands, this upgrade means smoother photo and video sharing, easier score checking across the college football landscape, and uninterrupted communication from kickoff to the final whistle.

ABC6’s Cameron Fontana shared video on Thursday showing the Buckeyes’ new turf at Ohio Stadium as it was being installed and rolled out with the sun still rising over Columbus.



Ohio State announced earlier this summer that it planned to install new turf in the Shoe before the 2026 season. The surface features Shaw Sports Turf’s Forge Series system — “a system-level product line designed to meet NFL standards, featuring Game ON technology that integrates markings directly into the turf,” according to a school news release.

That’s a lot of jargon.

Ryan Day used normal words in a statement.

“The new turf is a welcome upgrade to Ohio Stadium to maintain the safety and performance of our players on gamedays,” he said.

If it looks good, feels good and plays good — then I’m good.

I look forward to seeing it in person when Ohio State opens the season against Ball State at home on Sept. 5. We’ll get plenty of chances to see the Buckeyes break it in when they’re up 100-0 in the second half.

My oldest son was late applying for his student tickets in 2000... so he 'ended up' with a season ticket on the 50 yard line about 20 rows up... for the student price.. Folks around him were selling their pair of tickets for obscure games and getting obscene amts.. well into the thousands for a pair for single game...
I tried to convince him to buy a student ticket to the scUM game... and sell his 50 yd line ticket just for THE game
He would have made enuf to pay for his football and basketball season ticket with a bunch extra...
Didn't do it
Outstanding seat but he missed being in the student section

2006 1 vs 2 game. I had east side above the lights near the south goal lone front deck c row all year for stuf. People around me sold out for 2k. I did not wouldn't have missed that game for the world.

I wish I could have requested those tickets for the rest of my school days.

Ohio Stadium’s new turf has earned an enormous seal of approval.
When asked about the Horseshoe’s new playing surface on Tuesday, Ryan Day offered a quick answer.
“It was Jeremiah-approved. That was a big deal,” he said. “I went up to the big fella and asked him, ‘What do you think?’ He said, ‘I love it.’”
Ohio State installed Shaw Sports Turf’s Forge Series system this summer, “a system-level product designed to meet NFL standards, featuring Game ON technology that integrates field markings directly into the turf,” according to an Ohio State athletic department news release.
Day said that Ohio State has practiced and scrimmaged on the new turf a few times during the preseason, and both coaches and players have offered positive reviews.
“It seems to, so far, really be a good track. The guys like it," Day said. "And being out there and scrimmaging on it and practicing on it, we got a lot of great feedback from the players, and they’re the ones who know.”
Ohio State Installing New Turf at Ohio Stadium for 2026 Season

Ohio State previously replaced the Ohio Stadium turf in 2022. Even that new surface drew criticism in recent years as players slipped on it during games, leading to concerns that it could contribute to more injuries.
While NFL players have pushed to ban turf at the professional level and return to grass, Ohio State currently has no plans to make that switch because of the maintenance challenges associated with natural grass.
The turf also allows Ohio State to host non-football events such as concerts, even during the football season. Ohio State announced this summer that Columbus band Twenty One Pilots will headline a concert at the Shoe on Oct. 17, the same weekend the Buckeyes will travel to Indiana.
