On the banks of the Olentangy, stately Ohio Stadium is one of the most recognizable landmarks in all of college athletics. The horseshoe-shaped stadium is a monument to college football. Attending games in Ohio Stadium has become a Saturday afternoon ritual for Ohio State fans, who flock to the parking lots early to enjoy the gala atmosphere and pageantry that surrounds each and every game. Skeptics scoffed at the thought of a 66,000-seat venue, but they were quickly quieted when an overflow crowd of 71,138 showed up for the dedication game against Michigan on Oct. 21, 1922. Since the opening game against Ohio Wesleyan on Oct. 7, 1922, nearly 40 million fans have streamed through the stadium’s gates. Buckeye fans will have a better experience using their phones at games this fall.​

According to a recent social media announcement from Ohio State IT, crews are installing new network access points throughout the stadium to deliver significantly faster Wi-Fi speeds. For fans in the stands, this upgrade means smoother photo and video sharing, easier score checking across the college football landscape, and uninterrupted communication from kickoff to the final whistle.

ABC6’s Cameron Fontana shared video on Thursday showing the Buckeyes’ new turf at Ohio Stadium as it was being installed and rolled out with the sun still rising over Columbus.



Ohio State announced earlier this summer that it planned to install new turf in the Shoe before the 2026 season. The surface features Shaw Sports Turf’s Forge Series system — “a system-level product line designed to meet NFL standards, featuring Game ON technology that integrates markings directly into the turf,” according to a school news release.

That’s a lot of jargon.

Ryan Day used normal words in a statement.

“The new turf is a welcome upgrade to Ohio Stadium to maintain the safety and performance of our players on gamedays,” he said.

If it looks good, feels good and plays good — then I’m good.

I look forward to seeing it in person when Ohio State opens the season against Ball State at home on Sept. 5. We’ll get plenty of chances to see the Buckeyes break it in when they’re up 100-0 in the second half.
