Ohio Northern given Probation

Head Coach
If Mods feel this should be put in the Open discussion go ahead, but I thought it was Ohio football so I didnt know.

I don't know if any of you follow Ohio Northern, but they are in Mount Union's division are usually their best game. They had a shot to make a run at the NC this year in their division.

I think the punishment is kind of harsh, for having practices that they werent allowed to have. I say that b/c they self-reported all of it and did what they had to do by firing the coach. I know they are going to appeal, but I don't know if they will win. It has to be crushing to these kids that play there knowing that it is maybe their last chance to be a winner. I have a friend that plays over there so I am kind of close to the situation.

Just another reason why the NCAA sucks.

Here is the article.

Ohio Northern football banned from postseason, given probation

<!-- begin body-content -->INDIANAPOLIS - The NCAA placed Ohio Northern on two years probation on Wednesday and banned its football team from 2005 postseason competition for conducting a number of impermissible out-of-season practices under former head coach Tom Kaczkowski.
The NCAA's Division III Committee on Infractions also determined that Kaczkowski knowingly violated the association's bylaws by allowing practices during summer 2003 and then asked coaches and athletes to lie to investigators.
Kaczkowski was suspended by Ohio Northern shortly before the start of the 2003 season and later fired. He had a record of 93-79-2 in 17 years as the head coach of the Polar Bears.
Between June and mid-August 2003, Kaczkowski and one of his assistants attended and coached at "throwing sessions" attended by the quarterback and wide receivers. The coaches tracked the players who attended and contacted those who didn't.
Late in August - the week before NCAA-approved practices could begin - Kaczkowski and members of his staff oversaw and coached larger practice sessions with players broken down by position.
The violations were discovered when athletics department staffers notified the school's athletic director.
Kaczkowski said he was unaware that the practices were not permitted.
"The rules he violated are well-known, clear and unambiguous," the committee said in a public report. "The former head coach was in his position for 17 years and his contention that he somehow was unaware of these basic tenets of competition is not persuasive."
During its investigation, the NCAA also found an Ohio Northern football player and a women's golfer who had participated in their sports after their eligibility had expired.
The NCAA also issued a public reprimand and censure of Ohio Northern, which must have its athletic personnel attend NCAA compliance meetings.

i hate these probations. no different than ohio state bball. cutting off these kids dreams of a national championship because of something that happened BEFORE MOST OF THEM WERE EVEN THERE!!!. wrongfully punish the wrong people. its just wrong on every level.:(

Yeah that is what I don't get. I mean the coach was fired they took care of the problem and reported it. The worst part about it is this is these kids last shot. They arent going to go to the NFL, this is their pride and joy to play football. The NCAA is so morely incorrect that I just can't stand it. Maybe if this was a D-1 school, but it is a small little school in ADA Freakin' Ohio for gosh sakes. I mean who is from ADA?

Hey I live in Ada!!!!!!

I could see what the NCAA gave ONU as being fine, if they didnt fire the coach. But they did, and ONU football lost some good players because of it.

"Good lord the NCAA is a bunch of nazis" << so is ONU They dont let you do anything here and they even tell you where you can and can not live.

The President here used to be at North Dakota, you may remeber North Dakota for being the first to speak out against the mascot ban. (since that is one of the reasons ONU's president was booted from North Dakota... he wanted to change the name of Fighting Souix)

You do realize that The Reagle Beagle is the center of the known universe?

Amen to that!!! :slappy:

I went to ONU, and was in a frat. This new president has a hard-on for normal student life. He's taken the steps to shut down my frat altogether. He kicked us out of our house and is making it a dorm because the school overbooked. This dude is a piece of garbage. I thought Freid was a pain in the ass.
Regarding Kaz, he was my head coach when I was there. We ALWAYS had practices that pushed the envelope in the off season. I'm sure exhawg can tell you- the ones that aren't "required". At any rate, the day Kaz got himself fired he happened to walk some guests out to watch one of these unsupervised practices. This is when the NCAA/ONU nailed him. Not at a time when he was breaking the rules, but rather walking by.
Kaz was/is a good dude. He is working for a flooring company here in CBus as a salesman. ONU wanted Kaz out. Probably because he was becoming more important than the stinking president of the university. He got screwed. Now these kids are being screwed. I hate the NCAA, and I hate school administrators. Whatever happened to the days of Animal House? Whatever happened to having your college years be THE BEST YEARS OF YOUR LIFE. These kids have no hope for a National Championship now, there is no point in their season except pride. F the NCAA.

Had no idea there were so many of us former Polar Bears on here. Ahhh.... the Beagle, what memories. But to further add, I know they are in the process of filing an appeal, but since the first investigation took TWO YEARS for a ruling, I don't expect that appeal to happen any time soon. It sucks for them, because they had a legit shot at a national title this year.

I went to ONU.
My frat is no longer in existence. After I left they had a few parties get out of hand. Burned the furniture in the front lawn. Oh well.
I spent every weekend at OSU since Ada was a dry town then. Date myself on this one.
Great education, sucked for entertainment. The dorms weren't even co-ed. I was on double secret probation for getting caught a couple of time entertaining some ladies.
Ok back to the topic. I think it sucks for the players.

I'm surprised the headline didn't read. Buckeye state football team found to have broken NCAA rules. Now on probation.

Good point. Maybe the subtitle can read, "ESPN Throws Party."

I didn't read the article. I got the jist from the comments you all gave. My opinion is that if the NCAA doesn't do anything, other teams are going to think that they can get away with stuff, too. But I also agree that punishing the team now is punishing players and coaches who didn't do anything wrong. The NCAA can't chase down the players now, whether they're in the NFL or selling real estate, and suspend them for a season or a month or a week. The NCAA probably can't even call these people to invite them to a barbecue.

So I guess I'm torn. They're already DivIAA (or maybe DivII), so I don't think they have restrictions on transfering, if the players don't want to sit through a punishment for a crime they didn't commit. I don't know what is fair, in this case.
