2025 OH S Trey McNutt (Verbal Offer)

OHSAA shouldn’t be blamed for this. It is in their rules. Why weren’t the Head Coach and AD there to explain the rules? I do understand the frustration with some of the rules but this one should have been understood by the adults at his school.
Hard disagree! This is an asinine rule, and has no reasoning behind it. sports like basketball, soccer, baseball, hockey, lacrosse, etc can all be played in club settings throughout the year with no issues. Football is the only sport that kids are punished for playing in camps to work on their craft. The HC and AD wouldn’t be present at an independent 7 on 7 event. McNutt plays for a team out of Houston, TX and was at an event in Miami, FL, but because he’s from OH he can’t participate. What a crock of $h!t

Btw, Trey Mcnutt’ mom said he’s transferring out of state for his Senior season if he gets suspended for playing 7v7. So OH could lose a top flight talent due to archaic rules:roll1:

OHSAA is booty juice....and absolutely needs reformed. This is one of the more serious issues facing it, along with allowing schools that can essentially recruit play sports against schools that have strict district participation guidelines (which are still worked around but it's an advantage none the less)....

Don’t disagree the rule is wrong but rules are rules and the HC and AD should be teaching kids about the rules and the adults should be held responsible!

I understand where you are coming from in that he knew what the rules were. However, I strongly disagree with your logic. The governing body needs to protect and support athletes, not impede them. The kids need to learn how to advocate for themselves, not capitulate to bureaucratic, authoritarian nonsense. It sounds like McNutt is in a position where he has a fallback plan if OHSAA decides to suspend him.

He's the perfect candidate to enact change because he can shine a light on this nonsense while going elsewhere to continue to develop as a player and person. OHSAA will look really stupid if they're getting attention for driving talent out of the state.

I think we agree on most of this. The rules need to be changed. OHSAA needs to adapt.

However, as long as there are rules, the schools need to know them and make sure the students are aware of them and the possible conflicts. I may be on an island on this but I had a good friend who had a coach complaining about a correctly enforced rule during a game. He politely, but scratchy, asked the coach what other rules he didn’t want enforced that night.

We can all think of rules in life, just not sports, that need changed but until they are, we are all expected to follow them.

In HS sports (at least in California), the collective bargaining agreement stipulates that any teacher can apply for and get, a coaching position, regardless of the experience level of that teacher. Could even displace a 'walk-on' coach that has tons of experience but no teaching credential. All for the stipend on the salary schedule. Now many times, the position is filled by a credentialed teacher with experience, and that coach is invested to know the rules. Stories of pushing out, the golf coach say, by a teacher that has never played golf, are actual and factual. Given the HS, most of the players receive one-on-one training at their golf club. Anyway, the point is that the teacher that does the job for the stipend, may not have enough invested to read up on the rules. This may not apply to the above situation, but points out that it might exist. Ultimately this hurts the student(s) in the sport.

I really feel like this is one rule that needs to be broken by more higher profile kids to get the attention it deserves. If Urban couldn't do it through his advocacy (which presumably would carry some weight) then the kids need to do it and force the hand. We all agree its a dumb rule - and sometimes you need change makers at the grassroot level to force the hand.

I’m not sure this rule fits into this category, however a lot of the rules OHSAA uses are passed by the schools. Some of those rules make absolutely no sense to me (and others). I just want everyone to understand it may not be OHSAA doing (but it may too).

OHSAA is going to do what the big schools want it to do, sure.

That said, in the end, it's a collective of ADs making rules proposals and then a board of former school superintendents (mostly) approving them. I'm absolutely shocked they passed the baseball/softball/soccer/etc expansion as easily as they did - some of the big D-1s aren't going to be able to beat up on smaller D-1s that shouldn't be D-1s to get to the districts anymore, especially in those 3 sports.
