The last time Donovan Jackson took the field for the Ohio State offense, things did not go as he hoped. With one minute to play, the Buckeyes got the ball back, trailing Michigan by six. The Scarlet and Gray had a chance to upset their rivals on the road and book a spot in the Big Ten Championship Game for the first time since 2020.

While it started well, the final drive did not end as planned. After marching to the Wolverines’ 37-yard line in four plays, quarterback Kyle McCord threw an interception with 25 seconds remaining.

The game was over. Ohio State lost.

“We just didn't execute,” Jackson reflected on that final drive last week. “It's pretty easy to point fingers at a lot of people. But at the end of the day, there's 11 guys on that field and all of us just didn't execute. Personally, for me, I did not play well on that last drive personally.”

Jackson was scrutinized for his part in the final offensive play against the Maize and Blue. The junior could not block Michigan defensive end Jaylen Harrell as he came on an inside pass rush. And while Jackson did trip on the play, he does not believe he did enough to give McCord time to throw the ball where it needed to go.

The memory of that play has not left Jackson. The offensive lineman, who is now 0-3 against the Wolverines, has had the play burned into his mind, and Jackson was in a dark place in the days following the loss in Ann Arbor.

Can't help but wonder if Donovan was trying to cover for the LT and C, rather than tending to his own knitting. Hard to imagine that a sure-fire round two guy would play himself down, being healthy and all, without some exogenous reason like the above.

Not gonna lie...I'm not super pumped about the OL that struggled all year coming back. I'm not sure what the alternative is, and experience has to count for something, but this past season was the worst OL that I've ever seen at Ohio State.

And the same OL coach ....

Next year could be special. The OL will be the weak link. Just how bad or good they will be determines the season ....

The stellar offensive lineman has started all 26 games over the past two seasons at left guard for the Buckeyes.

Ohio State’s offensive line is loaded with veteran talent. Returning starters Josh Fryar and Josh Simmons are expected to be the starters at the tackle positions, while Alabama transfer Seth McLaughlin will man the center position for the Buckeyes this year, pushing last year’s starter Carson Hinzmann into a battle at right guard with Tegra Tshabola.

There is no question who will be starting at left guard, as Donovan Jackson is returning for his senior season after starting all 26 games over the last two years at the position, allowing just three sacks during that span.

Coming out of high school, Jackson was not only rated as the top guard in the country, he was also the top recruit coming out of Texas in the class of 2021. The big man has lived up to the hype over his first three years at Ohio State, appearing in 39 games since the start of the 2021 season.

The last two seasons Jackson has been recognized for his outstanding play by being named first team All-Big Ten in 2022 and 2023. Jackson has also been a model of consistency for Ohio State, as he has been on the field for over 800 plays from scrimmage in each of the last two seasons.

Following the loss to Missouri in the Cotton Bowl to end the 2023 season, Jackson had to decide if he was going to declare for the 2024 NFL Draft. While Jackson would certainly be picked in the first two days of the draft, he decided to return to Columbus for one more season to take care of unfinished business.
