Official Statistical Analysis Thread

Rewatching the Sparty game just now and they mentioned how badly Ohio State had dominated teams in the second quarter this year, and showed 2nd qtr stats against the Juggalos, Indiana, Fredo, and Corn, conveniently leaving out FAU since we dialed it back during the second qtr after scoring 28 points in the first eight minutes of the game. So I decided to take a look at the halftime--not just second qtr--scores for each game so far:

FAU: 28-3
Cin: 28-0
Ind: 30-10
Mia: 49-5
Neb: 38-0
MSU: 27-10

We've outscored opponents 200-28 in the first half this season, which is an average score of around 33-5. Our smallest halftime lead was Saturday against Sparty at 17 points. We have yet to enter the second half with less than a 3-score lead, and the Indiana and Spary games were the only ones where we didn't have at least a 4-score lead heading into the break. Hopefully the team will show some resilience should we eventually go into the second half this year with the opponent being within only a score or two.

2019 and 1969 are 1 and 3 respectively in point differential all time for tOSU through 7 games and the stats are nearly identical.

NO. 3 – 1969 (WOODY HAYES)
1969 AFTER 7 GAMES
POINTS SCORED 329
POINTS ALLOWED 55
AVERAGE SCORE 47-8
POINT DIFFERENTIAL +274
RECORD 7–0

NO. 1 – 2019 (RYAN DAY)
2019 AFTER 7 GAMES
POINTS SCORED 348
POINTS ALLOWED 56
AVERAGE SCORE 50-8
POINT DIFFERENTIAL +292
RECORD 7–0

As the article notes, the 69 team only played two more games that season and this year’s team has the potential to play six to eight more games...Just crazy when you think about it.

The official NCAA stats won't be out until tomorrow (later today, your time), but right now I know for a fact that we replaced Wisconsin as the #1 scoring defense (7.9 ppg) and total defense (224 ypg) in the country. Wisconsin was also #1 in Red Zone defense at five scores allowed in 10 RZ trips (50.0%), but after today they'll definitely be dropping...I think we made four RZ trips and scored on all four, so that would put them at nine scores allowed in 14 RZ trips (64.29%). We were #4 with nine scores allowed in 16 RZ trips (56.25%), and IIRC Wisconsin only had one RZ possession which ended with the strip sack by Young returned by Werner, so that would be nine for 17 which is 52.94% meaning we should be at least #3 in RZ defense.

Well, apparently math isn't my strongest suit as the NCAA still has Wisconsin as #1 in total defense over us by less than a yard per game (223.5 vs 224.3), but we are indeed #1 in scoring defense at 7.9 ppg. We are also #1 in passing defense (132.8 ypg), #1 in tackles for loss (74), and #3 in sacks (34). Chase Young is also #1 in sacks with 13.5 sacks (only one other player is in double digits, with exactly 10), and he is #2 in TFLs with 15.5 (leader has 16.0).

In today's installment of "The NCAA is Weird", for most stats they rank teams by average per game, not so for first downs. Because of this, Ohio State appears to have lost first place in this metric this week, while holding its spot in things like Scoring Defense (#1).

After their game with Wofford, Clemson holds the top spot in first downs according to the NCAA, with 238 for the season.

However if First Downs were ranked the way other stats are ranked, the tigers would be 4th with 26.444 per game and Ohio State would still be #1 with 26.875 per game.

So basically Ohio State is good?
