Official Server Upgrade discussion

Adding my own thanks for the new server and the awesome speed.

Also, I believe folks may wish to consider the following procedure:

Find a post from Clarity on this thread (top of page 1 is easy)
Add some positive rep.

This could help solve the ridiculous fact that there are numerous idiots like myself who currently have a higher rep than Clarity.
too late....

OK, I just thought of something. Since this coincides with the "OS upgrade," exactly what OS did you upgrade to? You didn't switch to an OS with a 2-Gb limit, did you?! :(

I can tell there was a reinstall, because my ssh went poof.

We're on FC4 now, so supporting 4gb is no problem. I'm going to PM you the emails I had sent before that takes us through everything. Basically it came down to mySQL, as it turned out, mySQL3 was breaking features already used on the site, and we needed 4 in order to make use of the higher end searching in 3.5.0. The original plan was to try and force yum to just upgrade mysql on FC3, but the deeper I got into that, the more clear it was that that version of the OS and that version of mySQL just don't mix well. Then I talked to the stat guy who said his stuff needed stuff unique to 4, and that was more or less the final straw. Those I could reach felt like FC4, despite how new it is, was the best way to go given our needs. I know you and I have talked about it being best to wait a few months, but we made a call and ran with it.

Not that it wasn't without headaches. FC4 choked hard on the Adaptec 2010S. And then PHP5 broke some of the mods around here. I had 99% of the site ready for a transfer around 5am. We didn't move until 11:30am because I had to figure out that 3 different mods now required a few extra lines of code above their global.php include, in order to handle permissions probably. It was a long night, lol.

I suspect yum will be busy keeping FC4 up to speed. From what we talked about, and the reading I did, it seems like they've got some issues to work out with it. But, with a lot of the unnecessary services and processes shut down, it's doing well by us at the moment.

Clar - was gonna check forum statistics and I got this:

You've snuck past my redirects! This is no longer the 'live' site, we're now on the new machine. Please point your browser to http://140.99.102.195. Within the next few days, this will no longer be necessary, as the www.buckeyeplanet.com domain will move over.

Just an FYI. I know you said some things wouldn't be working, but wanted to make sure you knew forum stats was one of them.

Thanks, I was foolish enough to put a hard coded link somewhere for that then. I'll adjust it with the proper variable when I next get on the server.

So what's the status on the RAM? It's been replaced by now, correct?

I love that -- with Texas fans hammering this site -- we're regularly seeing 250 - 300 users, ~50% jump from just two weeks ago, and the server is still running fast. :)

Well, they're claiming they couldn't ship replacements out, but that's sort of ridiculous. They sent the emails to us, but in Dryden's name. They say they've credited our card, but there's nothing pending on the bank account. There are also multiple emails saying the same thing. Needless to say, I'm confused. Hopefully they can explain tomorrow. I wanted that ram in *before* the game. Clearly not going to happen now.

Strange, I don't see why they couldn't ship replacements out. RAM is one item I haven't ordered from them so maybe they are goofy with it. Make sure that card gets credited though. You may want to check out Crucial.com for the additional RAM. I have had a lot of success with them in the past. Of course you have to make sure the RAM is compatible but their system is pretty easy for selection.
