Here's my thing about trading up. We gave up too much, plain and simple. Maybe a 2nd and 3rd this year or simply our #1 next year would've been ok but #2 this year and #1 next year was too much.
I respect your opinion here aurora but I must say I completely disagree that the price was too high. Personally, I about did a back flip when I first heard what the details of this trade were. I was expecting it to be next years first, and this years 2nd and maybe a 5th round or something like that.
It's delusional on you and anyone else's part to not expect that the price of Dallas' first round pick this year wouldn't be the Browns' first round pick next year since the Browns had already used this year's first for Thomas. To acquire a first round pick in the NFL you have to either give up a bonafide star player or a first round pick of your own.
That's the going price. Do you really think the Cowboys are gonna give up their #1 for a 2 and a 3. Come on! You are dreaming!
What about your other scenario which is even more ridiculous. What reason did Dallas have for simply swapping this years number one pick for next years number one straight up as you talked about above. I'm just taking a step back and looking at it from Dallas' persective. It seems you wanted Dallas to just bend over backwards for the Browns or something.
I think it was a good deal. I believe that Dallas could have gotten an additional 5th or 6th out of Cleveland. Cleveland got two of the top five or six players in this years draft and all it cost them was a second round pick. Think of Brady Quinn as next years number one pick. They get him this year and it only cost a number two. Not a terrible deal.
Once again,
the going rate for acquiring a first round pick is a first round pick in return. To prove my point, another team (New England I think) just made a trade to another team at the end of the first round and the price included the other teams 2008 first round pick. That's just the going price. The Browns didn't overpay.
I know alot of people don't like Quinn. I'm not his biggest fan either but I am not afraid to admit that he is way better than the 22nd best player in the draft. He's easily a top 10 pick. He was just a victim of circumstances today. He didn't get picked by Cleveland where everyone in the NFL thought he would. So he started dropping and there were a bunch of other teams lined up that either already had established QB's or had already made decisions to address other areas of their teams.
If Cleveland hadn't gone up to get him I believe Kansas City would have taken him with the next pick. Chicago probably wanted Quinn too. Dallas wasn't going to pick Quinn obviously because they were willing to trade the pick. Jerry Jones didn't dupe Cleveland into anything in that regard as a previous poster suggested (the scUM supporter I think it was). If Dallas wanted Quinn they would have fucking picked him and Cleveland knew that.
Brady Quinn is a top 10 caliber pick, therefore if next year's number one that goes to Dallas is a top 10 pick then big fucking deal. All it cost was this years number 2 and it's childish to think the Browns could have gotten a better deal for this trade. Sorry. It's childish to think so. Time to grow up I guess. To get something you have got to give up something. Welcome to the real world Mr. Browns fan.
Dallas is in it to win it just like everyone else. Including the Browns as it now appears! Sooner or later the Browns were gonna have to stand up and dare to be great. What you should be more pissed about is the now apparent wasted number 3 pick used for Charlie Frye. This is Quinn's team now because you don't trade up for a QB and then not let him have the ball. This
IS the Browns though so maybe I shouldn't make such statements.
The Browns deserve a pat on the back. They have gone a long way toward fixing the o-line and they have alot more legitimacy at QB now to be sure. As a fan I was willing to give Frye the benefit of the doubt and see what he could do with Steinbach and Thomas coming in on the line but Quinn is better than Frye. No doubt about it.
I know there is alot of bias against Quinn on this site because he played at ND and no one around here likes ND that's for sure. If Quinn had played at tOSU and put up the same numbers and turned in to the same player he is today, I think people on this site would have be alot more receptive to the idea of him playing for the Browns. Just my opinion.
Good luck Brady Quinn. That's the first time I ever wished Brady Quinn luck.:) Good luck to the Browns. I believe the Browns are better. Don't know if that will translate into immediate wins but Savage is putting his neck on the line and I like seeing my team make some waves for once.
Go Browns!!!!!
Go Buckeyes!!!!!!!
