Ohio State fans should be wary
Ohio State football fans hope one of two things happens this weekend - either Oklahoma beats Missouri or Pitt upsets West Virginia. (Actually, they'd better hope the Oklahoma thing comes true because I have a better chance of waking up skinny and good-looking than Pitt has of beating the Mountaineers.) Anyway, if Missouri loses then the Buckeyes figure to be back in the BCS national championship game.
...
Then those same experts vote OSU No. 3. Are they paying attention? The Buckeyes, ranked No. 1 at the time, lose at home to Illinois, then win an uninspired game against a so-so, banged-up Michigan team, and then sit on the couch and somehow work their way back to No. 3 because of a confluence of events?
...
Missouri, West Virginia and Ohio State are all one-loss teams. And they're ranked 1-2-3. Who is better?
Well, Georgia, Southern Cal and Oklahoma, to name three. Sure, they all have two losses and all have one inexplicable loss - Georgia to South Carolina at home, Southern Cal to Stanford at home, and Oklahoma to Colorado on the road.
But they're all better. You know it, I know it, everybody but the BCS knows it. The system is flawed, which brings us to talk of a playoff, talk of which is a waste of breath or, in our case, ink. It isn't happening. OSU's lone loss to the Illini is not inexplicable, not considering the Buckeyes' recent track record against spread offenses with talented run-pass quarterbacks. Think Florida.
And that's why OSU fans might think twice about wishing for that national title showdown against West Virginia. With QB Pat White and tailback Steve Slaton, the Mountaineers are probably 10 points better than Illinois. Even the BCS has figured that out.
