Official 2006 NCAA Tournament Discussion Thread

Digger Phelps just had Texas as a #1 seed. Bilas still had Memphis as a #1.

Rece Davis said "Can I interest either one of you in a champion from the #1 rated RPI conference that has more wins against the top-50 than either Texas or Memphis?"

Bilas said "If they win the Big 10 (tournament), yes".

At least the Buckeyes are finally in the discussion.

That is how you do it. You call the schools far away from Dayton and ask if they have sold their allotment. Most likely if they are far away and are an 8/9 or 7/10 seed they haven't and you can hopefully buy them.

It's a little trick we learned that worked A LOT better before this whole pod system crap.

That was my plan once the bracket's came out (if my vendor tix don't come through). Just like calling IU for football tix at the shoe west.

Texas would be a bad selection IMO...Memphis, well I'm not sure but that last loss makes them look bad...

If Dickie "The Mouth" is speaking WELL of the Buckeyes, methinks there's something rotten somewhere. That man has not had much good to say about OSU since ?

Can someone closer to the Columbus scene tell me if he's now allowed back in the Schott to do OSU games? I remember he was banned when one of our players collared an IU player, and on an open mike, Dickie V said something like he should be tossed out of the NCAA or somesuch. I haven't seen or heard him much (guess he doesn't do Big 10 since 'the General' got banished), but makes his money on the ACC. Course we don't get Big 10 basketball on the left coast much.

As far as the number one, heard today (Sunday) on EsPIN the same thing. That for OSU to get a number one seed, we'd have to win the Big 10 tournament. High RPI or not. I guess being associated with OSU is bringing Matta's reputation down (the dislike for us overwhelms the incredible job he's done this year ((and last)) with the basketball Bucks). Was glad to hear that he's not bolting for IU - maybe he'll do for us what Knight did for IU (Ohio native goes to coach in the next state over and does extremely well). Wouldn't that be neat.

As I read this, it looks like most belongs on the Matta thread, so hope I don't get 'Tibored' for not being threat conscious.

Number one recruit in both football and basketball, and number one seeds in both women's and men's basketball. Wow, a win at Texas, playing in the Fiesta Bowl (and winning) next year, and it doesn't get much better than this! Enjoy these times, all those without gray hairs in their head........

:oh:  :io:

Not sure if it's the same thing you are referring to, but on a rawfeed Dickie V was caught saying that Lawrence Funderburke was a "cheap shot motherfucker." I never heard it, so I can' confirm if it really happened or not.

I would like #1, but it really doesn't matter and #2 is most likely what we'll be.

I totally agree. That being said, I still think it's ridiculous that people like Jay Bilas think we have to win the conference tournament in order to get a #1 seed. We're the best team in the best conference in college basketball, and we only have 4 losses by a combined margin of 14 points. Memphis and Gonzaga each have three losses and they play in terrible conferences. If they're in the Big 10, IMO they'd have at least 8-9 losses and be on the fringe of the top 25. As for UT, the Big 12 is much weaker than the Big 10 (check the RPI ratings) and they have one loss that is over double (31 points) the four of ours combined.

I know I'm a homer for OSU, but I really can't think of any logical explanation as to why we're not a lock for a #1 seed at this point, besides the fact that we, unlike the other teams being considered, were unranked at the beginning of the season and have had to claw our way to the top of the college basketball contenders. That is, IMO it seems that the media doesn't want to give us a #1 seed b/c even though we've proven it on the court, the media still doesn't think we belong at the top. Thoughts?

This team has certainly proven that the pre-season polls are just as silly in College BB as in FB. Let all teams play for a month without rankings, and then rank them based on performance. Probably doesn't matter so much in BB, becasue you would never have the scenario that Auburn was in 2 years ago due to the tournament. It would be interesting to see where tOSU would be ranked currently if they had started ranked in the top 25 - my opinion is they would be a 1 seed if they had started out ranked in the top 15.

Regardless, your going to have to play some good competition in the 2nd round.

What does getting the #1 seed do for tOSU? Nothing in my opinion that a #2 seed will not give them. Does it look good, of course but is their an advantage in the tourney between the two seeds? Not in my opinion.

With that said and for agruements sake, if they win the tourney then they should be a #1 seed. Best team in the strongest conference according to the RPI.
