OC/WR Coach Brian Hartline (Official Thread)

Which Buckeye had the greatest impact on the Ohio State history of the position he played?

  • Brian Hartline

  • Other (This is the wrong answer)

PJ Fleck was a GA here in 2006 before spending just 6 seasons as a WR coach, landing the WMU job in 2013.

Sean Lewis went from GA at Akron in 2011 to HC at Kent St in 2018. He did hold a co-OC title in name only for a couple years between BGSU & Syracuse, but everyone knows Dino Babers was calling plays.

It's not that unprecedented.

Hartline did the GA stint in 2017 and has been the WR coach for 4 seasons. Another year or two, one with a pass game coordinator title, one as co-OC, and he'll be the hottest candidate under 40.

I don’t think he’s gonna have to wait a year or two when he’s consistently in top 3 for recruiting and is known for being a technician as a coach at his position.

It’s one thing to have the recruiting down….which he does in spades. It’s another to be known as an elite position coach even if it’s just WR’s. It shows an attention to detail that you assume will carry over to assistant coach hires.

I knew half-way through the 2020 season we weren’t keeping Hafley. He was too smooth in front of cameras on top of the excellent schemes, on top of his recruiting. It was a foregone conclusion.

The only variable in my mind is how far Brian wants to take it as a coach. He may be perfectly content in Columbus, and it isn’t as if he needs the money after his lengthy NFL career. But if does want to be a HC, I see someone offering the position this off-season….just a matter on if he thinks it’s a good fit. Obviously all my opinion….

There’s also the Luke Fickell path. Seems to have worked out okay for him. Many Buckeye “fans” wanted to see him fired back in 2012-2013. It’s easy to cherry-pick examples to support some arbitrary position. I don’t know what Hartline’s ambitions are but I know that most coaches follow a certain career path and going from position coach to head coach in just several years isn’t it. Maybe he’ll take Kevin Wilson’s job when Wilson moves on. Maybe he’ll be Marcus Freeman’s OC when he moves up. Tom Herman was ambitious, won a national championship under Meyer at OSU as a coordinator, parlayed that into two head coaching jobs, and what is he doing now? There are a lot of different paths.

Maybe part of Hartline’s success is being in the OSU machine run by Day, Marotti, and Pantoni, (all hired by Urban). He can’t take that with him if he leaves.

Who’s the toughest assistant coach to recruit against?

MAC coach: Brian Hartline. He’s killing it. It starts with his background as a player. He’s succeeded as a wide receiver at Ohio State and in the NFL, so he’s able to sell that along with everything else they have to offer. He’s also got a ton of energy and is really easy to talk to. He’s very confident and humble at the same time. He’s still relatively new to coaching so he’s always looking for ways to grow. The wide receiver room he has right now is crazy talented, which will continue to attract the top guys in the country no matter where they’re from.

This guy deserves so much praise. Beyond the NFL-bound starters, his backups cut the same mold. They don’t get in fights, they stick together, show toughness, and professionalism (see: end zone handshakes). Then you talk about the talent and the way he demands they earn their field time…

Brian has an awesome future ahead of himself. Hopefully it’s still on the Buckeyes staff.

Only thing is I still feel we could sneak Harrison/Egbuka in there for 5 reps each a game. I know you play your best like Hartline says but IMO we are going to have some serious transfer issues if we don't play more than 3. Next year that room with the incoming recruits will be 8 deep and it'll be hard to keep kids if they don't see the field at all outside of garbage time.

Again I get what Hartline is saying but I really hope we don't become a school where we develop kids for 2 years only to see them go elsewhere.

He's really grown as a coach. Dynamic speaker and obviously a tremendous leader. Recruiting just takes care of itself because of how good Brian is.

Hopefully he retires a Buckeye.

Taking up the GodHelpUs account to give Hartline a raise and keep him a Buckeye for life. Any objections?

Next year won’t have 2 guys as established as Garrett and Chris. They’ll probably rotate a lot more next year, at least until 2 other guys make it impossible to take them off the field. Similar to RB this year.
